It’s like a full-blown addiction, but instead of drugs or booze, it’s this fictional guy who’s got her wrapped around his finger. She knows it’s fucked up—knows she’s out here daydreaming about someone who’s not even real—but who cares? This guy? He’s everything. He’s charming in the worst ways, flawed in every possible sense, but there’s just something about him that has her hooked. He doesn’t even know she exists, but she’s ready to fight anyone who says a word against him. Seriously, she’ll defend his honor like it’s a fucking life-or-death mission.
He’s a goddamn trainwreck, but he’s her trainwreck. She’ll put up with all his baggage, his emotional scars, his dark sides, because somehow, that brokenness makes him feel more real to her than any real guy could. He’s messed up, but she’ll fix him in her head every single time. Maybe it’s that thrill of knowing he’s dangerous and untouchable that makes him even more irresistible. He might break her heart in a hundred ways, but it’s the kind of heartbreak that makes her feel alive, even if it hurts like hell.
And it’s never gonna happen, right? She knows that. He’s not gonna waltz into her life and sweep her off her feet. But it doesn’t matter. Because she gets to have him on her terms—no messy reality, no awkward first dates, no risking her heart for real. He’s always there when she needs him, in that perfect little bubble of fantasy she’s built for herself. And maybe she’s a little crazy for it, but at least with him, she’s never disappointed. Every time she replays his scenes, reads the fanfics, imagines their future together—it's like a high she can never quite shake. She knows it's all just a mindfuck, but she’s never felt more alive.
You kicked his leg out from underneath him, sending him falling to the ground. Standing quickly, you corrected your stance, preparing for his retaliation. His blue eyes glanced up at you through long lashes before he struck out his foot, hooking it behind your knee and pulling you down on top of him. You slipped your knife out of its sheath a split-second before you landed, positioning it at his neck. Breaths echoed around the room as your eyes met his, smirking as you watched him spot the blade at his throat. He matched your smile as you felt a tap at your waist, and glimpsing down you noticed his own weapon at the perfect position to puncture a major artery.
Frustrated, you twisted your head away and sat back on your knees before standing. Loki leaned up on his elbows, giving you his signature smirk. You huffed and stroked a stray piece of hair back behind your ear before signalling him to stand.
“Again darling? I thought I would have tired you out by now,” he got to his feet and held his hands out, presenting himself to you.
“I was off balance, you got lucky,” you flipped your knife around your hand before sheathing it again, holding your arms up in a defensive position.
Loki mirrored your actions before lunging towards you, striking towards your arm with his own. You blocked him before spinning and driving your hand into his chest, knocking him back a step. Not waiting for him to regain his balance, you pounced and collided with him, knocking him straight onto his back. As he fell, he grabbed your wrist, finding leverage to twist you so you landed first with him on top. You let out a grunt as your body impacted on the floor, your bones creaking with the collision.
Looking up at him, the first thing you noticed was his god-damn smirk. You shoved on his shoulders, causing his smile to turn into a frown. You shoved again, harder this time, and he slipped off of you, sitting beside your sore body. You stood quickly, slightly faltering as your knees gave way for a split-second, and trudged towards the door of the training room.
“My love?” Loki called out behind you.
“I’m just frustrated,” you spoke, loud enough for him to hear. “You better get your ass home before I get there so I can take it out on you.” You twirled, winking at him before turning back to the door. Loki’s face lit up as he faded from view.

Stars lit up the sky as you floated above the metropolitan horizon of New York. Your mask covered the bottom half of your face, but you could see your breath cloud as the evening became cold. Landing on a rooftop, you squatted and scanned the area for any disturbances. Your eyebrows furrowed as you saw a group of bodies, all crowding around a young woman. The heat signatures they gave off were crazy, deep reds and bright oranges almost hurting your eyes. You jumped across a gap to the next building, trying to get a closer look. Then the woman screamed.
You leapt down from the building, landing in a crouch as the bodies turned to look at you. You stood up quickly, taking in the gasps from the men as they realised who you were. The first man sprinted towards you, throwing a punch at your face. You blocked it with your forearm and jammed your fist into his stomach, doubling him over in pain. You drew your knee up to hit him in the face and jumped over his falling body. Throwing yourself onto the floor, you swung your leg in front of you and tripped up two of the remaining five bodies. As they fell you grabbed their heads, banging them together just hard enough to knock them out for a few hours.
A knife flew by your face, missing you by only a few centimeters. You turned quickly, sprinting towards the attacker and buried your elbow in his face, taking out his legs with your foot. As he fell to the ground, you grabbed his body and threw it against the remaining men, taking them out like bowling pins. Walking towards the young woman, you helped her up and checked her over.
“Thank you,” she stuttered, tears falling on her cheeks. You gave her a smile, hidden by the mask, before sending her on her way. You began lining the bodies up against a wall, ready for the police, when the sounds of footsteps approached you from behind. You spun, holding your hands up in a defensive measure.
“Hello (Y/N),” a man in basic black and purple armor spoke, a quiver strapped across his back. You were taken aback by his use of your name; you had never told anyone of your true identity.
“How do you know my name?” your voice was tense, as were your fists. “Who are you?”
“I’m Clint, this isn’t my normal way of introducing myself,” the man laughed to himself, rubbing a hand against his forehead. “I’m just gonna cut to the chase, we need your help.”
Days later you found yourself in Europe with Captain America, having been recruited for his fight against Tony Stark. The two of you had clicked instantly, him taking the fatherly role that had been missing from your life. You trained together, Wanda helping you with controlling your powers and Steve taking responsibility for your hand-to-hand combat. The progress you saw within yourself in just a few days was outstanding and you found yourself imagining a life with the team, training and becoming friends. But that was a dangerous fantasy.

“Take the new guy, he seems about your age,” Steve didn’t look at you as he spoke, his eyes still focused on Tony as he ran across the airfield. “Save Buck and Sam.”
“Ah, my boys always need me,” you laughed despite your anxieties. Sprinting towards the glass building, you flew into the air and crashed through one of the walls. You landed in a traditional “superhero” pose, looking up to assess the situation. Bucky and Sam lay on the floor, tangled up in some kind of web, as Spiderman crouched against a tall pillar.
“Woah, you can fly?!” the kid spoke, his voice revealing his youth. As you considered, he probably wasn’t much younger than you, a year or two at most. How could Tony bring in someone this young?
“Hey kid, haven’t you got homework or something to be doing?” you cocked him a brow, a smirk hidden beneath your mask. Spiderman’s eyes flicked up to you, widening in shock. You threw yourself towards him, arms outstretched to tackle him to the ground. Landing with a thud, you launched Peter across the room where he hit and slid down the wall. You bolted towards Bucky and Sam, ripping apart the webs that bound them. “What would you boys do without me?”
“Probably not have all of my food stolen,” Sam muttered, standing quickly and bringing his hand to his goggles. You sent him a glare before standing alongside Bucky. Glass shattered behind you, and you turned to see Spiderman caught by one of Sam’s drones, pulled outside.
“That works,” you shrugged your shoulders, leading the pair of men towards the building’s exit. “I can’t believe you got your asses handed to you by a kid.”

Deep breaths echoed, bouncing off of the prison cell walls. You sat by the bars, your arms wrapped around them and your hands intertwined. Your head rested against the cold metal, your eyes barely open as exhaustion took over your entire body. You had barely eaten, you couldn’t remember the last time they had given you water and you were sure the fatigue was obvious on your face. A sigh escaped your lips as you forced your head up to look across at Clint in his cell. He was sat on his bed, his head in his hands - as had become his usual position.
The opening of the main door caused you to look up; you half expected Tony to be back to gloat about his victory, to try and weasel any secrets out of you, but the silhouette in the doorway was taller, broader. As he stepped into the light, you heart broke and your lower lip quivered. Steve’s face was rugged, a hint of a beard tickled his jaw as he walked towards Sam’s cell. The two had a brief conversation, Steve glancing around the room at several points. You assumed Sam was explaining what had been going on. Steve reached into his pocket, pulling out a tablet that had hacked into the Raft’s mainframe. With a click of the screen, the cell bars lifted and you lifted yourself from the ground slowly. Your head spun and your legs shook beneath you as you stumbled your way to Wanda’s cell.
Wanda was the weakest of the group, she had been wrapped up in a straitjacket with an electric collar around her neck. Her eyes were sunken, deep bags hanging beneath them. She dragged her eyes up from the wall to look at you. A tear landed on your cheek as you knelt down before her, looking for some way to remove her restraints. Your breathing sped up as you began to panic, unable to find a solution. A hand touched your back, throwing you off balance as you spun around quickly, falling as your head went fuzzy. Large arms wrapped around you as your consciousness began to fade. You forced your eyes open just long enough to see Steve’s face, smiling down at you as you drifted off to sleep.
———–
“She needs to be here, where I- we can look after her.”
“She’s old enough to make this decision herself.”
The steady beeping of medical equipment steadied your breathing as you began to regain consciousness. You tried to lift your hand, but it felt like dead weight. Your fingertips twitched and you let out a soft groan, attempting to communicate with anyone who was in the room.
“Hey kiddo,” Steve’s voice calmed your racing heartbeat as he stepped towards your bed.
“Where are we?” your throat felt as though you had swallowed broken glass and the taste in your mouth was foul.
Steve looked towards the other man in the room, who you could now see was Sam. He sighed, his head hanging before looking back up at you, “A safe house in Sweden, the whole team’s here.”
“How did you- what happened?” your eyebrows furrowed as you coughed, your chest aching with each exhale.
“Well, I couldn’t leave my best girl,” Steve smiled up at you, but his eyes showed his true sadness. “Can’t be part of a team if the rest of the team isn’t there.”
“So, everyone’s staying here? What about Tony?” Steve flinched as you mentioned the name, taking a deep breath before speaking.
“We have to stay under the radar, according to everyone we’re criminals now. Tony isn’t going to try and change that. Nat, Sam and I are going to go underground and Wanda’s gonna be with us most of the time. What you do is up to you,” Steve looked up at you once again, his eyes pleading for you to stay.
“I-I don’t know.”
“I don’t want to interrupt a lovely moment,” Sam stepped forward, his hands in the pockets of his jacket. “But you’re young. You can’t be giving up your life before you’ve even had one.”
“Whatever you do,” Steve started, rubbing the back of your hand with his thumb. “We’re always here for you, whatever it is, I’m here.”
In the time after Germany, your physical and mental health took a hit. It took you days to be able to walk again, and weeks beyond that to start training. Natasha and Clint would often find you pottering around the safe house at 3am, a dazed look in your eyes and various weapons in your hands. Not to mention the nightmares, they woke not just you, but Steve who would race through from his room - adjacent to yours - when you began screaming, your lungs crying out for oxygen. It was decided that you would go with Wanda, she was the only one who could fully comprehend what was going on in your head, and you would return when you had fully recovered. Whenever that was.
“I’ll come visit as soon as Wanda thinks it’s okay, kid,” the tears in Steve’s eyes threatened to spill as he held you close to his chest. Your cheeks were already damp with salty tears as you had said your goodbyes to the rest of the team. Your arms were tight around Steve’s waist, and you didn’t want to let go. He pulled back to push loose hairs away from your face and to look into your eyes one last time. “I love you.”
“I love you, and thank you,” you hesitated. “Dad.”
———————————————————————————————————
You kicked your leg out as you leapt into the air, thrusting your foot into the chest of an Outrider and slicing another in half with your blade. As you returned to the ground you drove your foot into the fallen Outrider’s face, leaving the Wakandan dirt splattered with black blood. You wiped your face with the back of your hand, a grimace painted across your expression, before looking up to see Steve struggling against a pack of creatures. You launched yourself into the air before hurtling into the group, sending Outriders flying in all directions.
“Thanks kid,” Steve breathed, his chest rising and falling rapidly as he tried to regain his momentum.
“You know, maybe you’re getting too old for this,” you joked with a quick salute. Steve simply raised an eyebrow at you in response and the two of you sprinted in seperate directions. You grabbed a pistol from the holster at your thigh and sent bullets flying towards two Outriders, dark gore showering the dusty ground beneath you. You increased your speed as you lifted off the ground, taking an aerial view of the battle. From your viewpoint, you saw Wanda fighting against one of Thanos’ children, and she wasn’t exactly winning. You bolted towards her, your hair flying behind you as you landed on the ground, sending dirt flying from under your feet.
“She’s not alone,” Natasha spoke as Okoye readied her blade. You stood next to the assassin, fists out in a fighting position. Proxima Midnight looked between the three of you before lunging towards Okoye, blades prepared to strike. She dove, striking at Okoye’s chest as you plunged your foot into her lower back, tripping her onto her back. She rolled up easily, landing in a crouch as she kicked out at Natasha’s feet. Wanda, now up from the ground, lifted Proxima into the air and sent her flying into one of Thanos’ large tanks.
“Anyone got eyes on Vision?” Sam’s voice came through your comms and you spun quickly to see Vision fighting another of Thanos’ children. You gave Wanda a quick nod before she used her power to give you a boost into the air. You hurtled through the air to the forest, your landing ruined by the dense trees. You dropped through branches before arriving at the floor, the air sucked out of your lungs. You wheezed, your eyes closed as pain surged through your entire body. Your adrenaline was starting to wear out, and you weren’t unscathed from the fight. Looking down at your body, blood and dirt was caking your armor, skin exposed to show deep wounds. You lifted yourself onto your knees, looking up to see Vision stabbed by Corvus Glaive. You stood quickly, grabbing a dagger from your belt and lunged towards the creature, sinking the blade into his side.
Suddenly, Corvus was tackled to the ground and you whipped around to see Steve getting to his feet, yelling across at you and Vision. Vision was visibly injured and struggling to move. He nodded at you and the message was clear. You sprinted towards Steve and Glaive, landing a punch on Glaive’s cheek and kicking your shin into the back of his knee. As he fell, he grabbed your arm and threw you into a tree, your spine curving around the trunk. You cried out in pain as you landed against the ground. Steve blocked Glaive’s blade with his shield, landing a punch and grabbing the blade and throwing it in the opposite direction. Glaive grabbed Steve by the neck, throwing him onto a fallen tree where Steve rolled, grimacing in pain. Corvus walked towards the tree where you were still shaking with agony, and wrapped his hand around your neck. You gasped for breath, your eyes beginning to go hazy.
As you sucked in a shallow breath, Glaive’s eyes went wide. His body lifted as a blade protruded from his chest, revealing Vision holding the staff behind him. Letting go of the stave, Vision fell to the ground. You gasped for oxygen as Steve sprinted over, blood trickling down his face from a cut on his forehead. You crawled towards the pair as Vision’s eyes began to droop, Steve holding his head.
“Hey, you’re good,” you spoke slowly, breathlessly. “We’ve got to get you out of here, okay? I can take you-”
“There’s no way you’re doing anything,” Steve’s voice was stern. “You’re injured, we can’t risk you any further.”
“Steve, we need to get him out of-”
“I know, but-”
Wanda arrived on the scene, her face painted with worry as her eyes landed on Vision.
“Don’t cut me off!” your voice was raised, filled with urgency. “I can fly him up, get him back into the building. I’ll take out all of the Outriders, I can do it.”
“It’s too danger-”
Steve stopped speaking as dark clouds appeared between the trees, an ominous noise wiping out all cries from the battle field. A large figure stepped through them, a familiar golden glove decorating his left hand. He tensed and flexed his fingers, the stones making beautiful sounds as he glanced around, assessing the area. You looked towards Steve, his eyebrows furrowed as he stood.
“He’s here.”

early 2018 - remote europe
The bed creaked beneath you as you sat, the old wooden bed frame groaning at your presence. You pulled the medical kit out from your drawers, opening it to grab the antiseptic and cotton wool, before pulling up your shirt. A grimace crossed your face as you pressed the ointment to your skin, the stinging sensation dancing across your stomach. Grabbing a bandage from the box, you unwound it and wrapped it around your torso, ensuring it was tight enough to stop any bleeding. Then you moved on to the multiple wounds across your arms.
“Got yourself in kind of a bad state, kid,” you turned slowly to see the familiar face of Sam Wilson. “Need a hand?”
An aggravated sigh left your lips as you stood from the bed, “How did you find me?”
“Well, the deal was you were with Wanda. But that’s obviously not how it played out,” Sam gave you a serious look. “She told us the last place you said you were going and we took it from there.”
You rolled up the leg of your suit, cursing under your breath as you saw the bruising that had begun to appear. “Are you alone?” The uneasy tone of your voice didn’t go unnoticed. Sam looked across at you, his eyebrows furrowing slightly as he considered the team.
“We didn’t want to undo anything Wanda might have-” Sam struggled for his next word, thinking carefully of his next word.
“Fixed?” you finished the sentence for him, looking up and giving him a breathy laugh. “Well, don’t worry. I can take care of myself.”
“You don’t have to.”
The words stopped you in your tracks. You took a deep breath, turning to face the man before you.
“You’ve heard about the Infinity Stones?” Sam crossed his arms over his chest.
“Wanda and Vision mentioned them a few times, told me a bit about them. Why?”
“Some big, scary guy is trying to get them all. They went for the Mind Stone, but we got to Vision first.”
“Is he okay?” you spoke, your voice raising slightly with concern.
“He’s fine, he’s back at the compound with Steve and Nat,” Sam stepped towards you. “We need you, (Y/N).”
“Now, where have I heard that before?” you joked with a sigh, rubbing your forehead with your palms.
“He needs you.”
You looked up, pained eyes searing into Sam’s.
“What’s the mission?”
——-
The quinjet landed beside the Avengers facility and your heart jumped the second you reached the floor. You were instantly aware of how you looked, the weight of your backpack, the noises your jacket made as you stepped off of the jet. Sam moved to stand beside you, giving your shoulder a reassuring squeeze.
“You ready, kid?”
You gave a quick nod in response, your eyes fixed on the main doors directly in front of you.
“You’ll be fine,” Sam began to walk, his large strides putting distance between the two of you. Gritting your teeth, you forced one foot in front of the other, counting down the seconds until you were inside. The training hall was the exact same as when you had left. A sense of comfort washed over you, releasing the tightness in your chest as you looked around. A small smile broke onto your face as memories flooded back: training with Bucky, long nights talking with Wanda, Natasha trying to teach you new moves, leading to you on the floor, the breath stolen from your lungs.
Footsteps alerted you to a presence behind you and you spun around to meet Wanda’s kind eyes.
“Hey,” you breathed, a wobble in your voice.
“I’m sorry, I know you wanted to be by yourself bu-” Wanda began to walk towards you, taking your hands in hers.
“It’s okay,” you reassured her, pulling her into a hug. “I understand. Plus, everyone was probably missing me tons. You know, I don’t know how they survived without me.” You feigned a confident front, but you weren’t sure that Wanda was fooled.
She laughed nervously, taking your arm in hers and leading you towards one of the main rooms. You stopped before the door, looking across at your friend. She gave you a comforting smile before opening the doors and walking in. Your body felt like lead as you stepped through the doorway, seeing the same people you had left two years ago.
Nat’s eyes met yours and she rushed over, wrapping you in her arms. Although she rarely showed it, Natasha was one of the most caring people you had ever met. It was an extreme contrast to the act she maintained, but you knew her in a way no-one else did. She pulled back, her hands on your shoulders as she studied your face. You could see the relief on her face as you took in her appearance.
“I like the hair,” you let out a laugh. “You know, it’s hard for a redhead to pull off blonde.”
“Good thing I have the attitude for it,” she smirked, hugging you once again before returning to the large screen in the centre of the room.
You spotted Vision at the other side of the room, talking with Wanda, and gave him a quick wave. He responded with a smile, still growing accustomed to human greetings.
“Where’s Steve?” you spoke softly, to no-one in particular.
Natasha turned to look at you, “He’s in his room. Something about not wanting to make you uncomfortable or nervous.”
“I’m gonna-” you trailed off, leaving the room.
The corridors were hauntingly familiar, the same lights flickering as your shoes moved quietly along the wooden floor. 84. It was still 84 steps from the stairs to your room. Your heart rate increased as your hand stroked the door handle, pressing it lightly to reveal your room. Nothing had been moved, it looked as though you had been there only yesterday. The light streamed in from the closed window, thin, white curtains sitting perfectly still. You walked slowly towards the centre of the room, dropping your backpack onto your bed. It was a weird sensation, being back in a place that held so many mixed emotions.
You were snapped out of your memories as footsteps quickly approached from behind. You spun around and saw Steve standing in the door frame, an apologetic look on his face.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t realise you were back already,” Steve diverted his eyes, avoiding meeting yours. “I thought someone was-”
He stopped talking as you walked towards him. Once you were within touching distance, your lower lip began to quiver and you wrapped your arms around him quickly, sobs escaping your lips. He sighed in relief and hugged you back.
“I’m sorry,” you spluttered, pulling away to look up at him. “I shouldn’t have gone off on my own, it was stupid and-”
“Hey, no,” Steve pulled you back into his chest. “I just-, I got scared. But that’s my fault, not yours.”
You stayed in the same position for a few minutes, just taking comfort in his familiar heartbeat. When you pulled away, he wiped the tears from your face before walking you back through to the meeting room. Natasha was now joined by Rhodey and they were deep in discussion, frequently referencing to various sheets of paper that were strewn across the table. They looked up when you entered, Rhodey folding his arms across his chest.
“Welcome back,” you hadn’t met Rhodey before, only briefly encountered him at the airport battle, but you could tell you were going to get along with him pretty well. “You heard of Thanos?”
———————————————————————————————————
“What did you do?” Thor bellowed. The gauntlet was fried, burned into Thanos’ skin. The titan looked around, a smile growing across his face, before summoning a portal and falling through. You looked across at Bucky, who was standing from where he had been thrown. A sense of unease settled across Wakanda and glancing around, it was obvious that everyone felt the same. You launched yourself into the air, trying to see the battlefield, to see if the same dread could be felt across the nation. And that’s where you saw it. Soldiers floating away in the wind, nothing but ashes. Your heart dropped as your mouth opened, your breathing staggering. You crashed back into the forest, looking around at your fellow Avengers.
“Something’s not right, people are-are-” you stuttered, your heart racing faster than it ever had. Steve looked across at you, concerned.
“Steve,” Bucky’s voice came from behind you as you turned. A pile of dust was on the floor, where Bucky’s body would have fallen. Your breath hitched as tears pricked your eyes. Steve staggered over, his heart breaking in his chest. Kneeling down, he ran his fingers through the remains of his best friend, his face obvious with distress. He looked up between you and Thor, the three of you sharing a thought. What the hell is going on?
Something inside of you felt off. Your stomach lurched as you looked up at Steve, tears beginning to stream down your cheeks. He stood quickly, racing over to hold you in his arms.
“Steve, I-I don’t know-” you spluttered, tears staining his armor.
“It’s okay, it’s going to be okay,” Steve’s voice cracked, his facade of strength dissolving before your very eyes. Natasha burst through the trees, her breathing heavy and her face panicked. You had never seen her this way before, the unshakable assassin, shaken. You fell to the floor as your knees gave out, Steve going with you. He held you in his lap, his hands running through your hair.
“What’s going to happen?” your voice wavered as you looked up at your mentor, your face tacky with salty tears.
“I-I don’t know,” Steve could barely look at you, feeling sick to his stomach. “But it’s going to be okay, I’m gonna figure it out, okay?” He nodded, trying to convince himself most of all.
Your legs went numb and you tilted your head to look down, but Steve placed his hand under your chin, lifting your eyes back to his. Your breathing sped up, panic settling in your stomach as you felt like you were going to throw up.
“I love you, Dad.”
Steve fell forward as your body dissolved before him. A tear fell from his eyes onto the ashes on his arms. Natasha walked towards him, placing a hand on his shoulder as she chewed on her bottom lip, her anxieties getting the best of her. Steve looked at the floor, his body heating with despair and anger.
“This isn’t over. I will get them back, and I will kill Thanos.”
Your eyelids were heavy as light beamed through the thin layer of skin. Squinting, you lifted a hand to cover your face and sat up slowly. Steve was gone. Looking around you could see Bucky standing up, Sam on the floor and the tree guy next to a log. But no Steve, no Natasha, no Rhodey. You made eye contact with Bucky, and confusion was plastered across his face, as you were sure it was across yours.
“Where’s Steve?” you stuttered, your legs shaking beneath you. Stumbling over to Sam, you took his hand and he gave it a quick squeeze. “Where’s anyone?”
“I don’t know,” Bucky spoke slowly, moving to join the pair of you as T’Challa and Wanda emerged from seperate parts of the forest. You lowered yourself to the ground slowly, your body exhausted from whatever had just happened. Sam rubbed his forehead, desperately trying to hold it together and figure out an answer to the thousands of questions running through his head.
Your breathing was speeding up, your heart pounding in your chest; it felt as though your ribs were about to explode from the pressure. Your worried eyes met Bucky’s and he knelt down beside you, taking your hand in his larger, calloused grip. He gave you a soft smile, exaggerating his breathing to encourage you to fall in sync with his. Due to his past, Bucky was no stranger to anxiety and thus he was the one you always went to when your body started to act against you. He was more than happy to help, seeing you like a little sister and wanting nothing more than to protect you from the big, bad world. Your lip quivered before you took it between your teeth, hard enough to draw blood. Your eyes darted between Bucky and Sam, but as you looked at them you saw them looking in an entirely different direction.
A man stood before a glowing, amber circle, his red cape floating behind him as he strided towards you.
“My name is Doctor Stephen Strange. I was with Tony Stark as we fought Thanos, and I’m assuming you lost as we did,” Stephen’s eyes danced across the group, trying to devise the leader.
Sam stepped forward, “Nah, this is our victory party. You don’t see the balloons?” Despite his jokes, his voice was dark, serious.
“It’s been 5 years since our defeat,” your eyebrows furrowed at Strange’s statement. “And the Avengers need us.”
———————————————————————————————————–
“Avengers, assemble.”
Roars broke out from all around you, an army running and fighting as one. Steve was at the forefront, his shield in one hand and Mjolnir in the other. You could see the grime and dried blood that coated his face from your position, despite being fairly far away. You sprinted forward, a cry escaping your lips in anticipation of the extreme battle that quickly approached. Holding your arms out before you, you launched yourself into the air and thrust your fist into an oncoming Leviathan. The punch reverberated through its entire being and it began to fall as a white horse came flying through the air, the Valkyrie atop it slicing the beast’s spine. You sent her a quick smile before turning to observe the ongoing battle. You bolted into a large group of Outriders, a shockwave exploding beneath your feet and sending creatures flying into the air, where they were quickly taken out by Tony and Pepper. You were moving at an incredible pace, legs and arms flying as you obliterated any Outriders that dared to threaten you.
“What do I do with this thing?” Clint’s voice was familiar over comms, and instantly you knew the object he was referring to. The gauntlet.
“Get it as far away from here as possible,” the sound of Steve’s voice made your heart skip a beat. A smile broke onto your face as you realised, this could be it. This could be the end of Thanos, the end of constantly looking over your shoulder for trouble. You could have a life after this. Your eyes roamed the battlefield, searching for a glimpse of the red glove. Amongst the hoards of creatures, you spotted Clint diving and dodging oncoming attacks and bulleted towards him, your feet leaving the ground and your body becoming streamlined.
“Hey kid, not really an ideal time,” Clint spoke, his breathing heavy as he dodged under a blade that flew towards him.
“Gimme that thing,” you nodded towards the gauntlet.
“Hell no, I’ve already fallen for that once today,” he continued to run, the glove tucked underneath his arm.
“Clint,” you looked at him, your eyes stern. “I can fly. They can’t get it up there.”
The man hesitated a moment, before holding the gauntlet out to you, “Touché.”
With the gauntlet secured in your grip, you bolted into the air, your hair flying out behind you. The roars of battle echoed from below, but your focus remained on getting the glove away from Thanos. A searing pain shot through your abdomen as you were thrown to the ground. Looking down, you saw the hilt of a knife sticking out of your side. You gasped, blood trickling down your side as you brought yourself to stand again, gripping the knife and pulling it out of you. Gritting your teeth, your eyes roaming for the perpetrator as you began to run. Your feet were heavy beneath you, swinging back and forth across the uneven battlefield. Shots rang out around you, but you didn’t flinch. Once again, you jumped into the air, throwing your head back to look at the ships above you.
Bullets flew past you, bolts of energy and weapons you couldn’t recognise skimming your armor. Leather could only hold off so much, and little cuts and digs were becoming bigger and more painful. You could feel your power draining as your body began to give out, failing under the increasing pressure of losing oxygen and blood. Your eyes struggled to remain open as the air became thinner and you felt your grip on the gauntlet loosening. In a panic, you scrambled to hug the glove to your chest and you began to fall. The ground was closing in as you squeezed your eyes shut to prepare for impact.
“Hi, I’ve got you!” a familiar voice rang out as you felt arms catching you. You forced your eyes open and saw the familiar mask of Spiderman. A breathy chuckle escaped your lips as Peter raised an eyebrow, a cheeky smile across his face. “I thought you said you could fly.”
You simply nudged him in response, trying to maintain any kind of energy that was left in your exhausted body. “You have spider-legs now?”
“Oh these things?” Peter glanced at his suit as you reached the ground, him letting you down gently. “That’s not even the best bit.” He reached out for the glove, and you gave it to him gladly. You smiled at him before he swung off, gauntlet in hand. You allowed yourself a few moments to catch your breath, glancing around at the battlefield and trying to find your teammates. You spotted Rhodey in the air, thrusters lit up as he attacked a Leviathan, with Sam on his tail, shots firing out at a rapid speed.
Blood rushed through your body as you gathered your strength to stand, muscled legs holding you up. A herd of Outriders watched you rise and sprinted towards you, teeth scratching and drool flying as they ran. You gritted your teeth as your rubbed your hands together, readying your familiar fighting stance. Your fists acted upon muscle memory, driving into chests and faces, legs flying and stomping on fallen creatures. Your armor became covered in Outrider gore, staining your skin with a deep blue tint. You fought until an entire group of monster corpses lay at your feet, your breathing was heavy and sweat droplets coated your forehead. With a quick swipe of your hand, your face was almost cleared of Outrider blood and your eyes focused once again as you looked towards the surrounding creatures.
“I am inevitable,” Thanos’ voice rang out over the battlefield and you spun to see the heavy gauntlet on his hand. Your breath caught in your throat as his fingers touched, the sharp snap cutting through the dense air. A confused look appeared across the titan’s face as he turned his hand, revealing the lack of infinity stones. You gasped as your eyes roamed to Tony, who was kneeling with the stones implanting on his suit.
“I. Am. Iron Man.”
A sharp, metallic tone shattered the air. Pain was instantly shown on Tony’s face as his body crumpled to the ground. The hoards of creatures that had begun to charge towards you stopped, all seeming to share a thought. These monsters that you had previously thought incapable of emotion were scared. A quick look around the battlefield showed that their entire race was reacting the same way. The area was almost silent, only heavy breathing could be heard over your comms.
Your feet began to move slowly beneath you, carrying your body towards the familiar presence of Wanda, who was stood near to you. Without turning to look at you, she took your hand in hers, her eyes still glued to the titan knelt in the centre of the fight. Around you, ships fell from the sky, exploding as they met the ground. Fire burst out in the perimeter of the battlefield, but you couldn’t tear your eyes away from the monster stood before you. His breathing slowed as his eyes dropped to the ground, his elbows resting on his knees. He remained there for a few seconds before looking up towards Tony, and dissolving away with the wind. Your breath hitched in your throat as he turned to ash. You tilted your head up to look at Wanda as a single tear rolled down her face. She dragged her eyes towards you and a relieved smile broke onto her face as she looked at you. You pulled her into a tight hug, sobs escaping both of you as you felt her arms around you.
You pulled away after a few moments, your tearstained face smiling up at her with a mix of relief and heartbreak. You couldn’t imagine the cacophony of emotions whirring through her body. Your heartbeat was steadily increasing as you looked around the battlefield, looking for one person. Steve. Your comms were alight with conversation and celebration, making it impossible to identify individual voices. And then, from across the battlefield, your eyes locked with his. A breathy sob escaped your lips as you began to sprint towards him, your injured legs stumbling as you crossed the uneven terrain.
His arms were around you within an instant, your face pressed into his chest. Tears spilled from both of you, neither in belief of what had actually happened. Steve pulled away to look at your face, and despite being in his old uniform, you could see the weathered effect the past 5 years had had on him. His eyes were swimming as he assessed your face, barely an hour older than when you had disappeared before him. Your mind raced with questions but you couldn’t bring yourself to speak.
“Hey kid,” Steve’s voice cracked as he looked down at you, his hands on your shoulders.
“Hey,” you stuttered, your voice shaking. “So, it’s not weird that I called you dad right?”
Steve laughed, shaking his head, “It would be an honor.”
He pulled you into him once again, pressing a kiss to the top of your head. You spent a few moments just relishing in the familiarity of your family. Wanda had approached the pair of you, alongside Bucky and Sam. Steve took Bucky into his arms, patting his back as he pressed his face into Bucky’s soft shoulder. Sam jokingly wrapped his arm around the pair, encasing them in a group hug. You smiled at the action, taking Wanda’s hand once again. Once the group of boys had separated, Steve gave Wanda a quick hug, smiling at his friend. You situated yourself between Steve and Bucky, an arm around each as you settled into the comfort of your family.
Peering around the group, you noticed an empty space, “Where’s Nat?”
Steve’s face dropped as he looked around the group, “She -uh, she didn’t make it.”
Your eyes clouded over as your eyes fell to the ground. The group shared a few minutes of silence, grieving for your fallen sister. You reached to take Steve’s hand in your own, giving it a squeeze and looking up at him through clouded eyes. “She knows we won, and we won for her.”

Tony’s lakeside cabin was beautiful during the summer, the rays of sun beaming through the windows. You could have sat out by the lake for hours, not a single thought crossing your mind. It was peaceful, and you felt the most peace in knowing that Tony and Natasha were at peace as well. The funeral had been deeply emotional; you hadn’t known Tony too well yourself, but seeing the effect he had had on people’s lives proved to you how important your job was. You sat on the porch, watching Tony’s young daughter as she played by the lakeshore. An absent-minded smile danced across your face, the cool breeze tickling your face.
“Hey kid,” Steve approached you, his hands in his pockets as he sat next to you. You lifted your eyes to meet his, noticing the nerves he was trying to hide. Your eyebrows furrowed, but you shifted to give him some space.
“Hey,” your voice was soft. “How is everyone?”
Steve took a deep breath, surveying the horizon before you, “As good as they can be, I guess. Bruce is setting everything up, should be ready to go pretty soon. Best to just get it all fixed now.” You nodded up at him, leaning your head on his shoulder. He responded by wrapping his arm around your shoulder, hugging you into his side. “Can we talk?”
“What else were we doing?” you turned to face him, your entire body shifting as you crossed your legs beneath you.
“I mean, a serious talk.”
“Of course, what’s up?” nerves rumbled in your stomach as he looked down at you, his well known “serious face” on display.
“I think I’m going to stay there,” Steve’s eyes dropped to the floor, as though he was trying to look at anything other than you. Your eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
“Where? What are you-” you stopped yourself as realisation vibrated through your body. “As in-?”
Steve nodded, his eyes clouding with tears.
“With Peggy?” Your voice cracked as you felt your throat thicken. Tears threatened to spill, but you focused all of your efforts into staying strong, for him.
“I- I can’t stay here when I could be living the life I truly want.”
You ducked to meet Steve’s eyeline, drawing it back to you. Giving him a reassuring smile, you took a deep breath and composed yourself. “I understand, and I love you. No matter what.”
Steve pulled you towards him, tears falling from his eyes onto your hair. He pressed a kiss to the crown of your head then placed his cheek on top. He could feel your chest rising and falling unevenly as quiet sobs escaped your lips. Your face was pressed into his shirt, taking comfort in being able to hear his heartbeat.
“Say hi to Peggy for me,” you smiled, your lower lip quivering as a tear dropped onto your cheek. Steve pulled away from you, taking your face in his hands. He pressed a kiss to your cheek, his eyes alight with emotion as he looked down at you.
“Do you want to come out, stand with Sam and Buck?” You nodded in response, taking his hand gently in yours. “I’ve spoken to Bucky, but we’re not gonna tell Sam. I don’t think he would take it too well.”
“Judging by some of his previous reactions, I would say you’re correct,” you laughed slightly as the two of you left the lodge. The brief walk through the forest was a daze, you barely felt as though your feet were touching the floor. You tried your hardest to take in every moment, knowing it would be some of your last with Steve, but your uncertainty took hold of your consciousness.
You reached the clearing where Bucky and Sam were deep in conversation with Bruce. The pair turned as they heart your footsteps, Bucky giving you a knowing smile as his eyes met yours. Sam jogged over, throwing an arm around your shoulder.
“You okay, kid?” he looked down at you.
You wiped your face quickly, having forgotten about the tears. “Yeah, just allergies.”
“I keep telling you to go outside, instead of stuck in your room all day,” Sam’s eyebrows raised in an “I-told-you-so” manner.
“Yeah, yeah, whatever,” you shoved his chest jokingly, making a beeline towards Bruce. You watched as he pulled a small briefcase out from beneath the table. Steve stepped towards you, unclasping the buckles to ensure that all of the Infinity Stones were counted for.
“Remember, the exact second they were taken, then-”
“Then back, yep. Got it,” you were surprised at how Steve sounded, confident. He closed the case, taking it in one hand and Mjolnir in the other. It still shocked you to see the magnificent hammer in his grip. He climbed the stairs, not looking back at the group of friends behind him. You found yourself moving towards Bucky, wrapping your arm around his.
“Okay, and 3, 2, 1,” Bruce pressed a button on the machine and Steve was gone. You breath faltered and Bucky reached to take your hand, his eyes still fixated on the spot where his best friend had just stood. You remained silent, not wanting to bring Sam’s attention to you, not wanting to let him know anything that was happening.
“And back in 3, 2, 1.”
You turned your head into Bucky’s shoulder, trying to steady your breathing as you began to accept that he was gone.
“Where is he?!” Sam’s voice boomed through the bare clearing as he glared across at Bruce, who was panicking and rushing around his equipment.
Bucky nudged you with his shoulder, causing you to look up and across at the bench by the lake. A small silhouette was outlined in light, white hair sitting atop of a frail, old body.
“Sam,” Bucky’s voice pulled Sam out of his confusion as he turned, following Bucky’s gaze towards the old man. “You go ahead.”
Sam walked over slowly, his hands in his pockets as he looked out to the water. You watched the conversation, too far away to hear any of the words spoken. Bucky remained in silence, your hand still in his. He pulled his eyes from the scene before him and looked down at you, trying to gauge your feelings towards the situation. “You wanna go speak to him?”
You considered for a moment before shaking your head. “We said our goodbyes, I’m okay.” Bucky gave you a soft smile before turning his attention back towards his friends. You pressed a quick kiss to his cheek before spinning on your heels, your gaze fixed on the cabin through the woods. A tear fell to your cheek as you left, leaving behind the comfort of your father. Thoughts spun through your head as you walked, but you brushed them to the side.
The future is bright, so full of opportunity and possibility. And you have to take it. For Natasha, for Tony, for Steve.

a/n - hi! I tried uploading this last night but for some reason my tumblr was being strange lmao. requests are open my bois!!!!! <3 hope you enjoyyy :):):)
The Avengers facility was particularly beautiful in the evening, when the golden light from the setting sun reflected off of the glass barriers, which often led to you taking a stroll through the grounds alone. Sometimes you would walk with Bucky, sometimes with Wanda and Natasha, but on this particular evening the entire team was away on a mission. As a fully trained doctor, you stayed at the facility the majority of the time, ready for the team to return with a variety of injuries. When the team were away, you had a lot of time to yourself. This allowed you to do some research, working with some of the best scientists in the world was definitely a bonus, but you could more likely be found basking in the outdoor air.
Your evening walk had taken you to the river bank and you sat with your toes skimming the water, a blanket of peace falling over you. Your eyes fluttered shut as your mind roamed to your husband, as it often did when he was away on a mission. Bucky Barnes was the greatest man you had ever known, which was a bittersweet sentiment. It was amazing when you were together: him whispering sweet nothings to you as you drifted off to sleep, the way he would smile as he stroked your arm when you lay together, the sounds he made when he tugged your bottom lip with his teeth. But it also meant that when he was in the face of danger, he was willing to give everything for his cause, and that scared you. You trusted him to do what was right, but that wouldn’t always be returning to you.
You were comfortable in your thoughts when a gust of wind hit you, and you looked towards the sky to see the quinjet returning to the facility. You muttered a curse word under your breath before standing and jogging back towards the medical bay. You arrived just after the team, so pulled on your lab coat and a pair of gloves before entering the first room. Clint lay on the bed, a large gash across his chest. Natasha was standing by his side, which had become the usual when Clint was injured. You quickly cleaned the wound, and administered stitches to his side, making fun of his dramatic reaction to the minimal repair. Upon finishing, you left the pair with one of your young graduates to finish the procedure, and moved to the next room.
Bucky was sat on the bed, staring out of the glass walls. You could see his shoulders rising and falling rapidly and his knee bouncing beneath him. A slick layer of sweat was gathered on his forehead and his breathing was erratic. You moved towards him slowly, not wanting to cause any more unwanted anxiety. You knelt before him and took his hands in yours. Looking up into his eyes, you could see the pain and panic shooting across his face. He couldn’t bring himself to look at you, his mind racing with an immeasurable amount of thoughts. You reached one of your hands up slowly to sit underneath his chin and tilt his head to face yours. His eyes met yours and your heart broke.
“Hey,” you whispered, loud enough for only him to hear. “Breathe for me, please.”
Bucky’s eyebrows were furrowed and tense, but they loosened slightly at your touch.
“I-I,” he stumbled over his words.
“You don’t have to talk, just try and breathe for me, okay? In and out,” you placed a hand against his chest to feel his racing heartbeat. You breathed slowly, trying to encourage him to do the same. His face was wet with tears and his eyes were constantly switching between being focused and glossing over. After a few minutes Bucky’s breathing had returned to a near-normal pace, and he placed his face in his hands, his elbows resting on his knees. You remained in front of him, your entire focus on the man in front of you.
“Where are you hurt?” you spoke softly, wanting to relieve him of any physical pain he may be in.
Bucky shook his head, a small whimper escaping his lips.
“Bucky,” you whispered as he pulled one of his hands away from his face to look at you. “Please, let me help you.”
Bucky didn’t speak, instead lifting his shirt to reveal three bullet wounds on his stomach, and further grazes down his hip. You reached for the instruments on a nearby table and lightly pressing his chest to lay him down. He reached an arm over his head, whilst the other drifted down to play with the hem of your lab coat. You grabbed a fresh pair of gloves and a set of tweezers, before giving Bucky a loving nod. You set to work, removing three full bullets and placing them in a ziplock bag to be sent to Bruce for analysis. You cleaned and stitched the wounds before pressing a kiss to his stomach.
Bucky sat up, his hands still shaking slightly. You looked across at the man you loved and felt your heart shatter into pieces. You held his hand in yours and leant over to kiss his forehead.
“Come on baby,” you mumbled against his skin. “Let’s get you cleaned up.”
It wasn’t obscure for you and Bucky to bathe together, but this wasn’t your regular set up. You ran the bath, ensuring it was the perfect temperature, whilst Bucky was sat on the floor. He still hadn’t spoken a word since returning, and you knew something had happened, something bad. You looked over your shoulder and saw him looking straight back at you. His face was pained and his fingers were flexing and relaxing at an intense pace. Turning off the tap, you crawled over to him and pulled him into an embrace.
You remained on the floor for a few minutes before tugging at the hem of his shirt. He pulled away and allowed you to lift the fabric above his head. You could see the scarring across his chest and traced it with the lightest touch of your fingertips. Bucky flinched at the action, causing you to retract your hand quickly. Your heart sunk at the motion, but you could tell from Bucky’s facial expression that he felt as awful about it as you did. Standing, he unbuckled and removed his trousers, his boxers following and stepped into the bath.
He slid down with a small sigh, submerging himself up to his chest in the warm water. You watched through tired eyelids, a sense of calm washing over you to see him in a peaceful state. He kept his eyes on the opposite end of the bath as you tidied the bathroom; picking up clothes and rearranging random bottles.
“Why are you with me?” Bucky’s voice startled you, coming out between a mumble and a groan. You spun on your heels, his face still looking straight ahead.
“Bucky,” you moved towards the bathtub, sitting down at the opposite end. Your eyes roamed his body before landing at his glazed eyes, to which he gave you a quick glance before looking away once again. “I love you. No matter what happened out there, I love you. So much.”
You reached for his metal hand and he consciously took it with his flesh hand instead, although hesitantly. His eyebrows furrowed as tears pricked his eyes, threatening to spill at the drop of a hat. He looked up at you, his eyelashes dark and wet.
“I’ve done bad things, really bad things. Things no-one knows about, even Steve,” darkness roared in Bucky’s eyes. “You’re so perfect, so pure. This goes against every law in the universe.”
You reached up to wipe away a tear that had fallen onto Bucky’s stubbled cheek. He closed his eyes at the touch, and you shifted to be sat closer to him.
“That wasn’t you,” you whispered, pressing a kiss to his hand and leaving a trail of soft touches along his arm. “That was an entirely different person, and I love you for who you’ve grown to be.”
After a moment of silence, Bucky spoke, “I’m not so sure, doll.”
You stood slowly and stripped off your own clothes. You tapped Bucky’s back for him to shuffle forwards and you slipped into the bathtub behind him. You placed your legs on either side of his body, and he leaned his head back onto your chest. You ran one of your hands through his hair, the other along his shoulder. His hands roamed to your calves and he held them for comfort.
“Baby,” Bucky spoke softly, his voice barely above a grumble. “I’ve done things I can’t take back. I can’t give people’s lives back. God knows I wish I could.” By now a steady stream of tears were cascading down his cheeks. “I’m a murderer.”
The final sentence shattered your heart. “Bucky, listen to me. That. Wasn’t. You. You are not a murderer, you are a good man. You are the best man I have ever known.” Tears pricked at your eyes, but you knew you had to remain strong for him. You could feel Bucky shaking beneath you as he fell apart. “I love you so much, Bucky. I wish you could understand how much I love you.”
After about an hour in the bath, you and Bucky moved to the bedroom. You had left him to get changed and into bed whilst you went to the kitchen and poured two mugs of green tea. You brought them back to the room, where Bucky was sat on the edge of the bed, in a very similar position to the one he had been in in the med bay. You placed the tea down on the bedside table before slinking in next to him. Wrapping your arm around his shoulders, he leaned into you and placed his head in the crook of your neck. His breathing was slow, and the moment was intimate.
You lay down, patting the space next to you for Bucky to lay with you. He obliged and faced you, still not entirely there. You stroked along his jawline, studying every inch of his face. His eyes remained on yours as he placed his hand on your waist, giving your hip a quick squeeze. You smiled and his eyes softened at the gesture. You leaned forward and pressed a kiss to his lips, affectionate and gentle. As you turned to grab the mugs of tea, Bucky grabbed your hand and brought it to his chest. He smiled down across at you and you could see hints of your Bucky in his eyes. You kissed him once again, slowly.
Bucky’s arms went around your waist, and you pulled yours up so that they sat between your chest and his. Your palm was flat against his chest, and you could feel his heartbeat pulsating beneath his skin. The rhythm was smooth and you found yourself breathing in time with him. Bucky’s metal arm was cold against your skin, but you didn’t mind the familiar feeling. You reached your other hand up to run it through his hair. His eyes began to droop, his emotional state having made him tired over the past few hours. You smiled as he started to fall asleep, his lips parting and his shoulders relaxing.
“I love you Buck,” you whispered, trying to make sure it was the last thing he heard before losing consciousness.
He mumbled something back, and despite barely moving his lips you could easily tell what he had said. “Love you too, doll.”

a/n - hi! ily all <3
The bifrost was alight with colour, the rainbow tones shimmering against the dark night sky. Thor and his fellow Asgardians appeared before you, crowding around the tall figure in the centre. Dark hair flowed along defined cheekbones and a gag covered his mouth. His hands were bound, and he looked at the floor with sunken eyes. Your idiot lover.
As they began to walk, Thor patted you on the shoulder. He was the only one aware of your romance with Loki, and he was happy to see some positive reinforcement in his brother’s life. He gave you a broad smile, his eyes crinkling.
“Lady (Y/N)!” he spoke loudly, before coming in closer and speaking in hushed tones. “He’s going into the cells beneath the palace, I’ll tell the guards to let you past.”
Thor gave you a quick wink before striding off, his cape flying behind him gracefully. His soldiers followed him closely, packed tightly and restricting your view of Loki. You walked behind the troops, leaving enough of a gap to allow you space to breath. Your robes drifted in the breeze, the pale greens and deep browns winding together to compliment your skin tone and the plaited hair that framed your face.
Upon reaching the palace, you walked to the training grounds whilst Loki was taken to the cells. You watched the young valkyries training, sparring with swords and shields. There was one young girl in particular who stood out. She had dark skin and even darker hair and was poised with an impressive stance, before lunging at her opponent, taking their legs out from underneath them. You laughed as you saw her brief smirk of victory before she twirled her sword in her hand and prepared for her next battle.
After a brief period of time spent wandering the palace grounds, you decided to head down to the cells in hopes of seeing your love. The stone steps were steep and cold, the sounds of your footsteps reverberating through the stairwell. You stepped down to the floor and through a large stone archway. Loki’s cell was the furthest away, forcing you to traverse hallways of cells. You tried to keep your eyes straight despite the creatures yelling and staring at you, but your body betrayed you and began to shake. By the time you reached Loki’s cell, you realised you had been holding your breath. Your hands shook as you tried to regain a regular breathing pattern. And then you saw him.
Your heart broke as your eyes roamed his body, taking him all in. He was beaten, bruised all over. He had scratches and scars across his face, some of them still oozing blood. A breath hitched in your throat as you approached the orange holographic wall. The second Loki saw you, the pained expression painted across his face disappeared, instead replaced with love and relief.
“Did you miss me?” he grinned, but the smile didn’t reach his eyes.
Part of you wanted to slap him, part of you wanted to embrace him and never let him go, and the final part wanted to tackle him to the floor and kiss him until he was breathless. You looked towards the guards who were stood a few cells down. They gave you a quick nod before the cell wall disappeared. You slipped in and the wall returned behind you.
You looked up at the man in front of you, unsure of how to act. Your eyes searched his, desperately looking for any sign of what he was thinking. You reached up to press your lips to his, wrapping your hands around his neck to pull him in further. Loki’s arms wrapped around your waist and squeezed you in a tight embrace. You pulled away after a moment, tears pricking your eyes as you tilted your head up to him.
“What have you done this time?” you whispered, a tear falling onto your cheek. Loki wiped it away with the pad of his thumb before looking down at you.
“Just the usual my love,” he couldn’t bring himself to be serious with you, not yet. “Something my dear brother didn’t like.”
Loki pressed his cheek to your face and you turned to kiss his palm. The wetness from your face tickled his fingers, and his eyebrows knitted together as he studied your eyes.
“My love, why do you cry for me?” his voice was soft, gravelly. “I am not deserving of such beautiful sympathy.”
“Because I love you,” your voice cracked on the final word and your eyes drifted to the floor. Loki placed his thumb under your chin and tilted your face to look up at him.
“My darling, I love you more than anything in this world,” it broke him to see you in such a state of heartache. “I do hope that you know that.”
You nodded slowly, another tear landing on the apple of your cheek. He pressed a delicate kiss to your lips, then traced light kisses along your cheek until he reached your temple. His hands connected on your lower back, pulling you into a tight embrace. You pressed your face into his chest, taking one of his hands from your back and intertwining it with your own.
Loki hummed lightly as you began to sway, his eyes fluttering shut in hopes of blocking out the ungodly scenery. This wasn’t the life he had promised you. You deserved thrones and jewels and making love in the morning sun. But here you were, slow dancing with him in a prison cell.
“(Y/N), I fear that I have let you down,” Loki drew his face away from your hair, pain once again appearing on his face. “You deserve so much more than this.”
“I don’t want any other life if I’m not with you to live it, my love,” you reached up to kiss him once again and he felt warm tears travelling between your cheek and his. He pulled his free hand up to touch your face, his other still interlocked with yours. You weren’t sure how long you were connected, but you wished it would never end. Loki pulled away, much to your dislike, and rested his forehead on yours.

Power vibrated throughout your body. The team watched diligently as the purple sparks erupted from your fingertips. Don’t think about them, concentrate. You forced your eyes open to aim your energy towards the mannequins at the other end of the hall. You felt your feet begin to leave the floor, and though it might try, gravity had no chance of pulling you back down. You sped up and across the hall, a faint purple haze trailing your body. You spun quickly, before ploughing your fist into the first dummy, sending it flying and bouncing off of the glass walls. You heard a communal exclamation from the team behind you as you landed on the floor, which fuelled your desire to impress them even further.
The second figure didn’t stand a chance as you leapt and roundhouse kicked it, leaving it in two pieces on the floor. You didn’t even turn to look at the final dummy as you lifted your hand behind you and blasted it, sending it smashing through the wall, a subsequent streak of coloured electricity humming in the air.
“Oh yeah, don’t worry about that. I’ll pay for it,” Tony spoke, his voice loud enough for you to hear across the training hall. “Not like I pay for enough around here.” He trailed off before leaving the room, rubbing his forehead.
Your breathing began to slow as you regained your strength and stepped towards the remainder of the team. Sam looked at you with an impressed look plastered across his face, reaching out to give you a pat on the back as you passed him.
“Better every day kid,” he spoke, laughing as he turned to walk alongside you.
“Thanks Sam,” you said, looking up to give him a smile. Sam had become like an older brother to you during your time with the Avengers, there for you whenever you needed him. His intense sense of humour was highly useful during the dark nights, when the thoughts were too extreme to sleep. “You ready to take me on, yet?”
“Damn, you know I’m getting too old for that. You need someone like Parker, or Bucky. I bet he could take you down with that metal hunk of junk,” he smirked, never dismissing an opportunity to give a dig in Bucky’s direction. You rolled your eyes in response, laughing quietly. Your relationship with Bucky wasn’t necessarily a secret, but you made a conscious effort to keep it separate from your work.
Taking a quick look around, you noticed that Bucky wasn’t in the training room. The team had split into two groups, with Steve, Nat, Wanda and Vision deep in discussion and Peter and Rhodey messing about with their suits. Tony had been locked in the lab for the past few days, so it was safe to assume that everyone’s equipment had received a serious upgrade.
“I think I’m gonna train a bit longer,” you stopped in your tracks, turning to face Sam. “But I’ll see you later? I think I’m gonna make pasta for dinner.”
“Ooh, you know I can’t miss your pasta,” Sam chuckled, his eyes crinkling. “Take it easy kid, you’ve worked hard today.”
“Thanks,” you gave him a quick hug before jogging towards Steve. “Hey, can we spar?”
He wrung his hands, looking across at his teammates, “I think Wanda might be a better fit.”
There was a long-running theory amongst the team regarding you and Wanda, and you were aware of some bets that were happening under the table concerning who would win in a battle between the two of you. Your powers shared a similar undertone, hers stemming from the Reality Stone and yours the Power Stone. You were already drowsy from your earlier training, but you knew that to keep up with the rest of the team you had to push yourself.
“You up for it?” you tilted your head towards Wanda, who seemed nervous yet confident.
“Sure,” the woman’s Sokovian accent bled through her speech. She had been training with Natasha to disguise her dialect for mission, but when she was with the team, she often fell back into her natural cadence.
You moved towards the centre of the room, stretching your arms and cracking your neck. Wanda shook her hands at her sides as she steadied herself across from you. You gave her a quick smile then turned to Steve, making sure that he was ready to pull you out if it got bad.
“Okay, rules. Play ‘til someone taps out. No extreme power usage, otherwise Tony will get pissed at us for breaking things.”
“Language,” Peter yelled out from behind Rhodey, fully using him as a shield if his joke went down badly.
Steve rolled his eyes before continuing, “If it gets out of hand, Rhodey and I are ready to step in. You good?”
I gave him a quick nod, Wanda doing the same. He held out his hands to gesture the start of the competition. You took a deep breath, your eyes focusing on Wandas. You thrust your hands out in front of you, a shield of purple streaks appearing between you and leapt into the sky. Wanda rocketed backwards, throwing her hands above her to raise segments of the floor into spikes. You swerved to avoid the stalagmites rising towards you and crashed to the floor, your fists pounding the concrete and sending out purple cracks. The rock around you crumbled and you could feel the power pulsating throughout your body. You could see the deep purple hue surrounding your body as you stood, then sprinted towards Wanda.
She met you on the ground, her eyes glowing a bright red and her fingertips sparking with flares. You threw a punch directed at her left shoulder, which she blocked and kicked at the back of your knee. You fell, but swung your feet to take her down with you. She landed on the floor with a thud, the air knocked out of her lungs. You stood quickly, preparinging yourself for a burst of energy, not noticing that Wanda had sent her hand towards you. You were thrown into the far wall with a flash and you tumbled to the floor. Whining, you lifted yourself onto your hands and knees and looked at the woman doing the same across the room.
You stood slowly, feeling the entirety of your strength flooding your body. Steve and Rhodey flashed each other a concerned look, before turning their gaze back to you. You didn’t care. All that you could focus on right now was the power coursing through your veins, and it needed an escape. You began to walk, before it became a run, and then you flew into the air at an increasing speed. Rhodey snapped his helmet on, having an idea of where this was heading. You weren’t in control of your own body at this point, you had no idea how to stop what was about to happen. This had almost happened once before, but Bucky had been there to help you, to talk you down from this place. He wasn’t here now.
You bulleted towards Wanda, screaming. Your hands were out in front of you, and you had one intent. Kill. You could see the fear in Wanda’s eyes as you got closer and closer, before Rhodey grabbed you around the waist, Steve grabbing Wanda. You flailed in his metallic grasp, desperate to release your power somehow. You flung your fists at his head, not feeling the pain as your knuckles ripped and became bloodier with every punch. You heard Rhodey grunting as he struggled to maintain his grip on you, and your power surged, further and further. Until it gave out.
Your left hand was warm, despite the rest of your body remaining at a normal temperature. You opened your eyes slowly, allowing them to adjust to the sudden light in the room. A figure was sat by your bedside, his hand overlapping yours. The dark mop of hair was comforting to you, and you moaned a greeting.
“Hey doll,” Bucky looked up at you, giving you a soft smile. “You’ve been out for a few hours. How are you feeling?”
“Not great to be honest,” your voice was croaky, and it was almost painful to speak. “I can’t remember anything, what happened?”
“Well, you were training with Wanda. She threw you, and you kinda freaked out,” he spoke slowly. “Rhodey grabbed you and you passed out. They brought you straight here.”
“Is Wanda okay?” your voice wobbled, concern present.
“Yeah, just a bit shaken. I’m more concerned about you.”
“Baby,” you mumbled, feeling awful about what had happened. “I don’t know what it was, it’s like I wasn’t in control.”
“I don’t blame you, you’d been training for hours. You need to take a break sometimes babe,” Bucky’s eyes met yours and you could see the emotion swirling in them.
“If I have any chance of being able to go on missions with the team, I need to learn to control it. My power can help us-”
“But not if you won’t help yourself.”
Your eyes fluttered shut as a tear dropped onto your cheek. Bucky brushed it away with a finger and placed a delicate kiss to your lips. You opened your eyes to meet his, and he gave you a soft smile before kissing you again. You put your hands around his neck, pulling him towards you so that he was lying next to you on the bed. You flipped slightly so that you were able to place your legs across his, almost straddling him. Your tongues moved in sync, dancing and exploring each others mouths. You stroked his face, his scruffy beard tickling your beaten knuckles. You winced slightly, causing Bucky to pull away before you pulled him in even closer.
His hands roamed your back, pulling your hips to meet his. It wasn’t often that you got time alone during the day, and by god he was going to make the most of it. Your feet moved under the covers, brushing his and bringing a further sense of closeness. Bucky lightly scratched your lower back with his metal hand, the sensation sending a shiver down your spine and making you smile into the kiss. You trailed your hand along his shoulder and placed your other palm flush against his chest. After a few moments, Bucky pulled away, his breathing ragged.
“I love you doll, so much.”
“I love you too.”
The New York skyline was glittering as you stepped into the evening air. The team was out on mission, but Steve had decided that you were to be used as back-up, thus leaving you with the quinjet, waiting for a call. You paced back and forward, hearing crackles through your earpiece. Bucky checked in with you every so often, but it had been a while since you had heard his voice.
“Nat, where are you?”
“You see, there are a lot of aliens so I’m trying to deal with those at the minute.”
“Yeah, well, look to your right. There’s a lot more coming.”
You looked up to the dark sky and saw an immense ship descending towards the city. Before it had even reached the floor, there were masses of creatures jumping out of the doors to attack the population.
“Guys, I’m coming in,” you tried to sound assertive, before Steve shot you down.
“No, (Y/N). It’s too dangerous.”
“I don’t care. I can help. I can stop this.” You levitated into the air, speeding towards the city at an incredible speed. You aimed for the ship, your fist out in front of you ready to strike. You shot through the flow of creatures, sending them flying. Bodies crumpled before you and you fired a blast from your fist into the crowd, killing hundreds of the slimy mutants.
“Baby, this is too dangerous.”
Bucky’s voice almost stopped you in your tracks, but you forced yourself to spin and throw an electric burst to the ship. It exploded into shards of metal, which rained down on the city, taking many of the creatures with it. You could feel the power rising again, and you knew this was going to end the same way it did when you were training. But you were their best chance at finishing this.
You turned and took off towards midtown Manhattan, leaving a purple haziness in your wake. You landed with a crash, sending sparks flying in a mile-wide radius. Creatures flew into the air, their bodies contorting and exploding. You glanced around and saw your teammates fighting off bodies, and being overrun by the sheer amount of them. You ran towards Clint and Natasha, doing a barrel roll into the horde of aliens drowning them. They flew, glowing purple before fizzling out. Your body began to glow a deep violet, your eyes the strongest, darkest shade. The sight caused the pair to take a step back before shouting quickly on their comms. You couldn’t hear anything other than the blood pulsing in your ears.
You flew into the air once again before focusing on Tony, Rhodey and Peter working together to take down a group of creatures. You shot towards them, hurling a ball of electricity into the crowd of aliens, leaving them disintegrated in piles of ash. Tony retracted his helmet to look up at you with concern, but you had already left, searching for the final 3.
Steve was fending off a gang of creatures with his shield, the constant ricochet of the vibranium weapon ringing in his ears. Sam was soaring above him, sending shots down and dropping various weapons into the masses of aliens. Bucky was close to Steve, sending bullet after bullet flying from the gun in his hand. You dove towards the faction of beasts, landing in a crouch. The concrete beneath you fractured and split, purple light weaving into the cracks. Every creature in the city flew into the air, erupting into a wave of purple flame. The power flowing through your veins didn’t cease, you felt it building and building. You glowed with a ferocity that had never been seen before.
Bucky stepped towards you, knowing he was the only chance at saving you from yourself. He dropped his gun and stood face to face with you. He searched your eyes for any sign of you, but all that he could find was the unlimited power coursing through your body. He reached his hand up to rest on your cheek, and a tear fell from your eye. You wished you could put your hand atop his, but you couldn’t control your body. It felt as though you were trapped in a shell, a shell that was hell-bent on destroying everything in its path.
“(Y/N)?” Bucky’s voice was soft, a sense of desperation clear.
You continued looking straight ahead, your breathing picking up. Your hands drew into fists at your sides, and your glow intensified. You wanted to warn Bucky, to tell him to move. But you couldn’t.
“I love you,” Bucky spoke, and you erupted.
Thud. Bang. Crash.
The dummy in front of you fell into pieces, and your fists ached from throwing punch after punch. Sweat dripped from your forehead as you looked at the ground, feeling as though you were going to throw up. Bucky had been asleep for 2 weeks, under constant supervision from Bruce and regular checks from Tony. You couldn’t bring yourself to see him, knowing that you put him there. Your lack of training had done that to him. Steve had become increasingly concerned about you, checking in with you a few times a day, until he couldn’t find you in your room. You were in the training hall. Always.
If you had trained harder, you would have been able to control it. Bucky would be okay, you would be happy together and everything would be okay. You cursed yourself once again before grabbing one of the multiple mannequins you had lined up along the wall. You placed three in various positions before steadying yourself at the opposite end of the wall. You breathed slowly, then sped towards them, your feet lifting from the ground. You plunged your fist deep into the first one, picking up the broken model and throwing it at the second. You leapt high into the air, summoning all of the power you could muster and aiming it towards the final mannequin. A blast shot through the air and split the dummy in two. You remained in the air for a moment before lowering yourself to the ground and shooting blasts across the room in pure frustration.
“Woah!” a voice called out from the door, and you spun quickly to see Bucky bruised and beaten, but alive.
“Oh my god,” you brought your hand to your mouth and tears pricked your eyes. You wanted nothing more than to sprint into his arms, but something made you hesitate. Guilt.
“Babe?” Bucky spoke again, walking slowly towards you. “What’s wrong?”
“I’m sorry,” you blurted out, your voice cracking. You crumbled to the floor, partially from exhaustion but also from the sheer amount of regret for what had happened. “I’m so sorry.”
Bucky rushed to your side, cuddling you into him. You just rocked yourself and repeated your apology over and over again.
“Baby,” he spoke softly, a tear falling from his eye. “There is nothing to be sorry for. You saved all of our asses out there. You know that right?”
“But I almost killed you.”
“I’m still here. You didn’t think you were gonna get rid of me already, did you?” he smirked, but the underlying emotion remained on his face. “Why are you in here? You need to take a break doll.”
You tilted your head to look at him, tears streaming down your face, “You said it yourself. I saved you all, but if I’m gonna do it again I need to practise. How are they going to tru-”
“Screw them all,” his face turned serious. “Really. Fuck ‘em. I know this whole damn city thinks it needs you, but not as much as I do. Please. You need to look after yourself, if not for you, for me.”
Bucky pleading was enough to bring you to your knees, “I love you Bucky.”

Warmth.
The first thing you felt. The warmth from the sunlight beaming in through the window. The warmth of the blankets you were nestled under. The warmth from the body wrapped around yours.
Opening your eyes slowly, you could see the mess of hair on the pillow next to you. A faint smile crossed your lips as you rubbed your tired eyes and snuggled further into the body next to you, eliciting a sleepy moan. Peter’s arms tightened around you and you let out a breathy laugh.
“Peter,” your voice was raspy, sending your boyfriend crazy. “You’re gonna be late.”
“I don’t care,” his eyes remained closed, as if he was grasping on to his last few minutes of sleep. He pressed his face further into the pillow, breathing deeply.
“I’m gonna be late,” you leaned into him, taking in his scent. These were your favourite types of mornings, waking up beside him, enjoying each other’s presence.
Peter groaned, stretching his arms dramatically. You giggled, watching him as he almost fell out of the bed. He opened his eyes slowly and looked over you, taking in your semi-conscious appearance. He smiled down at you and leaned over to place a kiss on your cheek. You smiled back up at him, sitting up to face him.
“I’m going to shower,” he announced, standing drowsily and trying to even his balance. You watched him as he padded through your bedroom towards the bathroom, and sighed as he closed the door behind him. You heard the water turn on and stood slowly, moving towards your wardrobe. Rifling through your clothes, you eventually decided on a pair of leggings and an old t-shirt. Putting them on quickly, you sat back down on the bed and grabbed your phone from your bedside table. Clicking it on, the time appeared before you.
“Shit,” you stood and sprinted over to the bathroom door. “Peter! It’s 7:45, you might want to hurry up.”
A series of crashes were the only response, before Peter opened the door, dripping wet in only a towel. “Crap.”
You ran over to your drawers, grabbing some of Peter’s clothes that had been left there, tossing them towards him as he hurried to dry his hair. He threw them on instantly, droplets of water still dotted across his skin.
“I’ll grab something to eat on the way,” he rushed past you, grabbing his backpack and giving you a quick kiss. “I’ll see you after school!”
He opened the window and flung himself out of it. A breath caught in your throat, only releasing when you saw him swinging down the block. You couldn’t help but let out a laugh as you turned, then noticed his Midtown sweater lying on the floor. Walking over, you picked it up and considered it in your hands. On multiple occasions Peter had left it here and had returned throughout the day to pick it up, so this was pretty normal. Tying it around your waist you dismissed your thoughts and headed towards the lab.
Working with your father was an interesting experience. The time that wasn’t spent deciphering some complex equations was passed arguing and screaming due to your clashing personalities. Everyone said that you were too alike, “there’s too much Tony in you”, but you knew it was because you both wanted to do the right thing and your opinions conflicted on what the right thing was.
You threw open the door to the lab and found Bruce working at a large screen. He glanced up quickly, giving you a small smile before going back to his work. You had learnt over time that leaving Bruce to work whilst he was in the zone was the best way to go about any social interaction. You didn’t want to risk him losing his train of thought, as he was often assisting your father with something important. You continued through the lab until you found Tony sitting at a computer, coffee cup in hand.
“I didn’t think coffee was really your thing,” you joked, sitting in the chair next to him.
“Usually it’s not,” he turned to look at you, crossing his legs. “But I’ve been looking at this damn code for so long I think I’m actually going crazy.”
“Let me have a look,” you turned the screen to face you, flicking back up to the start. “What’s the issue?”
“It keeps giving me random numbers, can’t figure out why. Equations are all good, checked the values and everything with Bruce. I can’t get it,” he stood, stretching his legs and walking in small circles, a hologram appearing containing various bits of data.
“Oh,” you said, your eyebrows raised. “It’s here, you’re missing a bracket. Syntax error.”
The look Tony gave you could have moved planets, you had never seen someone look more shocked and simultaneously confused.
“What?” he sat down again, pulling the screen towards him. “Well then, I think it’s clear where you got your brains from.” He leaned back in the chair, taking a swig of coffee.
“Y’know, it’s pretty normal for stuff like that to slip by. It’s like 7 in every 10 times there’s an issue, it’s probably syntax,” you smiled, voicing your Stark sarcasm. Despite not inheriting many of Tony’s appearances, you definitely had the same sense of humour. Running the program, you saw the data appear on the hologram and Tony’s eyes lit up like christmas lights.
“What’s next?” you smiled, feeling proud of yourself.
“Bruce is working on a prototype of an anti-gravity device, but we need some stuff picking up. Could you run out for us?” he looked across at the grimace on your face, then added to his point. “You can get food.”
“Sold, to the man with the glowing chest,” you stood up, exaggerating your point at your father. He tossed you a credit card and you shoved it in your pocket. “What do you need?”
“I’ll get FRIDAY to send it to you, it’s just some simple materials. Shouldn’t be too hard to find. Take Happy with you, he seems to be getting comfortable downstairs,” Tony glanced across at you, a smile on his face. “Thank you for this.”
You sent a smile to your father, then turned towards the elevator.
“FRIDAY? Bottom floor, please,” you spoke, easing at the familiar voice in response.
“Of course Miss, I’ll send the list from Mr Stark and Dr Banner to your cell phone.”
“Thanks.”
Upon reaching the bottom floor, you saw Happy outside the front door waiting. You strolled over and pushed open the large, glass door. “Good morning Happy!”
“I see someone was here this morning,” Happy looked up from his phone, giving you one of his signature looks.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about-”
“The longer this goes on, the more trouble it’s going to be when the boss finds out.”
“I know, Happy. I get it, I’ll sort it,” you opened the car door and jumped in, Happy doing the same in the driver’s seat. “Downtown is probably our best bet, and I’ve heard there’s a really good churro place.”
“Peter,” Ned called down the hallway as Peter sped towards him. “Dude, you’re late for Chem and Mr Cobwell is in a bad mood.”
“Shit,” Peter muttered, pulling his backpack further up his back. “What do I do?”
“I got you bro, I told him you were at the nurse.”
“Ned, I owe you. Big time,” Peter finally allowed himself to breathe, leaning over to place his hands on his knees. “What’s next period?”
“Gym,” Ned replied. “I heard they’re gonna put one of those Captain America videos on again.”
“Gym, okay. Wait-”
“Peter, just come sleep,” you spoke softly, reaching your arms out from underneath the blankets. “It’s nice and cozy.”
“But what if your dad comes in?”
“FRIDAY,” you looked towards the ceiling. “Tell me if dad comes anywhere near the hallway, please. Wake me up if I’m asleep?”
“Of course, Miss.”
“Thank you!” you turned back towards Peter. “I’m starting to think you just wanted an excuse.”
“Of course not,” Peter smiled down at you, leaning across to take your hand in his. “Just let me take these off.”
He leaned back to unbutton his jeans and remove them quickly, before taking off his sweater, throwing it across the room.
“Shit, I left it at (Y/N)’s,” Peter spoke to himself, louder than he had realised.
“(Y/N)? Like (Y/N) Stark?” Ned’s voice rose alongside his enthusiasm
“Shhhh!” Peter pulled his friend into a hallway. “Okay, yes, (Y/N) Stark. But you can’t tell anyone. I mean anyone. Not even MJ.”
“Oh, okay,” Ned nodded, confident in his ability to keep a secret whilst Peter felt the exact opposite.
“I think I have a spare shirt in my locker,” Peter trailed off, stepping towards the row of lockers in the corridor.
Driving towards Brooklyn was a calming experience. You sat with your legs up on the dashboard, the window slightly open so that your hair blew out of your face. Your phone was tucked into your pocket and you had received the list of materials.
“Where can we get anti-static acrylic?” you looked across at Happy, who was fully focused on the road ahead. If it had been anyone else he would have made them sit in the back, but you had known Happy since you were a kid. He was like an uncle to you, most of the team were family at this point.
“There’s a store in Brooklyn, they stock all kinds of obscure materials. We’ll head there,” he replied without looking at you and you turned to watch outside your window.
As the car pulled up in front of the store, you grabbed a worn-down cap and a pair of sunglasses from the glovebox. You glanced towards Happy, noticing how his phone was instantly in his hand, before opening the door and hurrying into the building. Recently the press had been more interested in you, wanting to ask you about your father and his new apprentice, Spiderman. You had known Peter’s alter ego since the beginning, but it had taken you by surprise when the first paparazzi had asked you about him. You had stumbled over your words, which was strange because you had inherited your father’s cool when talking to strangers. It was safest to try and avoid the paps, for fear of spilling something about Peter or your relationship. That would be difficult to explain to your father.
The store was cold, sending a shiver down your spine as you stepped in. You glanced around before deciding to speak to an employee. Removing your sunglasses, you headed towards a young woman wearing a store shirt.
“Hi, I was wondering if you could help me find some materials?” you asked politely, smiling softly.
“Sure- Oh my god, you’re (Y/N) Stark,” the employee looked at you with wide eyes. You cursed internally, maintaining the smile on your face.
“Uh, yeah,” you chuckled.
“Of course I can help, what are you looking for?” you could hear the nervous waver in her voice.
“Some anti-static acrylic and polarizing film, if you have some?” you continued your confident act despite the defeat that lingered behind your eyes. You knew exactly how this was going to end.
“Let me go have a look in the back, I’ll only be a few minutes,” the girl rushed off, stumbling over her own feet.
You wandered the store when you shivered again. You ran your hands across your arms before remembering the sweater tied around your waist. Untying it, you pulled it on over your t-shirt. Your arms were immediately grateful, the goosebumps that had covered your skin fading away. You had been browsing for a few minutes when you felt your phone vibrate in your pocket.
Paps outside, must have found out we’re here - Happy
Opening Twitter on your phone you instantly saw your name trending, the account at the top belonging to the store employee.
“Hi, sorry to keep you waiting,” a familiar voice returned. You looked up to see the employee. “I’ve got your acrylic and film.”
She held out a bag to you and you glanced in to check the contents.
“Thanks,” you smiled, still trying to hide your annoyance. She followed you across to the tills where you pressed your father’s credit card to the card machine before leaving quickly.
The second you stepped outside, your sight was invaded with flashing lights and your ears bombarded with shouts. You swiftly put your sunglasses on and made a bee-line for the car.
“How’s Tony?”
“Have you spoken to Spiderman?”
“Where did you get your sweater?”
Crap.
“Did you see the new pictures of Stark’s kid? She’s wearing our sweater!” Peter overheard a group of girls talking as he headed towards the gymnasium. He immediately pulled out his phone, heading to social media and seeing the pictures of you flash onto his screen.
“Is that your sweater?” Ned peered over his shoulder before Peter brushed him away.
“Who else’s could it be?” Peter racked his brain for an excuse to use in gym class.
As the two boys entered the changing room the subject of conversation continued from one social group to another.
“Yeah, she’s wearing a Midtown sweater.”
“Where did she get it?”“I don’t know, but she’s fit.”
Peter’s blood boiled at the way the boys spoke about you, he wanted nothing more than to stick them against the wall.
“Yo, what are you looking at Parker?” one of the jocks was staring Peter down, who hadn’t realised he had been staring in the first place.
“I- uh- nothing,” Peter backed away, towards where Ned had began to change. He reached into his locker, pulling out a pair of yellow shorts and a white shirt. “All I got. Shit.”
“Dude, it’ll be fine. Coach’ll mention it like once, then you’re fine,” Ned spoke, pulling on his sweater.
Peter and Ned entered the gym with their classmates, Peter sticking out like a sore thumb.
“Parker,” Coach Wilson yelled. “Get over here. Where’s your kit?”
“Sorry Sir, it’s in- in the laundry,” Peter stuttered, looking up at his coach.
“Woah, coincidence. You have that Stark internship, right? Did you lend your sweater to (Y/N) Stark?” Flash yelled out from the bleachers, high-fiving his friends.
“I mean, I’ve never-”
“It’s funny that you have that internship, but you’ve never met Stark or his daughter? Come on,” Flash taunted, pride painted across his face.
“I, uh-”
“He’s met her!” Ned yelled out, standing from his seat on the bleachers. Turning on his heels, Peter’s face flushed red as he glared at his friend.
“I’m not supposed to talk about it,” he spoke sternly. If looks could kill, Ned would be flat on the ground.
“Well then,” Flash spun around, ever the entertainer. “Why not just ask her for your sweater back?”
“I can’t- it’s not. It’s not mine.”The room went silent as Peter’s phone began to ring from his pocket. Lifting it to his ear slowly and giving a quick glance to Coach Wilson, he pressed the answer button.
“Hello?”
“Hey, it’s (Y/N),” Peter flinched at the name, fully aware everyone else in the gym could hear as it bounced from wall to wall. “I was out and I had your sweater and the press got pictures and now they’ve all blown up online. I’m really sorry, I didn’t mean for any of this-”The panic in your voice was clear, which worried Peter. He had seen you this way only a few times before, he was much more used to the confident, upbeat (Y/N).
“Hey, don’t worry about it. I think they’ve kind of figured it out already,” he turned away from the bleachers, exiting the gym and lowering his voice.
“Are you in class? Sorry, I should have texted.”“No, it’s fine. Wait, what about your dad?”
Peter heard you curse under your breath.
“I’m gonna go talk to him. God I hope he hasn’t seen the pictures yet.”
“Hasn’t he seen you with it before?”
“Not the logo. I need to go, I need to hurry. I’ll let you know if it’s safe to come by after school.”“Okay, I love you.”
“I love you too,” despite everything going on, Peter could hear you smile through the phone.
Re-entering the gym, all eyes were on Peter.
“So, Parker. How does one get a Stark internship?”
You rushed towards the lab, carrier bag in hand. Throwing open the door you placed the bag on a desk next to Bruce and continued through to where you had left your father this morning. He was sat in an almost identical position, staring at the computer screen in front of him. Walking over slowly, you could see the pictures of you on the screen.
“Hey,” you spoke quietly, your hands shaking slightly with anxiety.
“So, I’m assuming it’s Peter’s sweater? Is this just all blown out of proportion?” he looked up at you, radiating a sense of understanding.
“I mean, it’s his. He left it here. This morning,” your eyes darted to the ground, your brain running wild with possible reactions. Most of them bad.
“How long has this been happening?” your father seemed calm, which unsettled you. You had expected him to be annoyed, angry even.
“A few months, pretty much since he came here the first time,” you rubbed your hands together, doing anything to avoid Tony’s gaze.
“Damn,” he leaned back in his chair, putting his hands behind his head. “And I didn’t notice the whole time? I must be getting old.”“You’re not mad?” you looked up, your eyebrows furrowing together.
“You know what I was like before you came along, right?” he glanced across at you. You shook your head in response, you didn’t speak much of his life before you.
“Well, I was much worse than you kiddo,” he laughed to himself. “Does he make you happy?”
“Yes,” you exhaled, letting out a breathy laugh.
“Then I’m happy,” Tony stood and walked across to you, wrapping an arm around your shoulders. He pressed a kiss to the top of your head and smiled down at you. “Now, did you get our stuff?”

prologue
It was easiest if she related the emotions to colours.
Red was anger. Red felt like needles pricking every inch of skin on her body. It felt like lava burning every vein, destroying each cell as it went. It felt like acid streaming down her throat, pooling and searing her stomach.
Orange was anxiety. Orange felt like her throat clenching and contracted as she struggled to catch a breath. It felt like her brain was shouting words that sne couldn’t begin to understand and every bone in her body was shaking.
Yellow was joy. Yellow felt like a warm tingling, tickling her from the inside out. It felt like lying in the warm grass, holding hands with the person she loved the most and watching the clouds float by.
Green was jealousy. Green felt like helplessness, uselessness. It felt like desperation without the ability to do anything. It felt like she was beating herself up repeatedly, over and over again, to no avail.
Blue was knowledge. Sometimes blue felt like her brain was going to explode, filled with things she didn’t want to know. Things that terrorised every conscious thought she had. Other times, it felt calming, a sense of knowing and peace.
Purple was romance. Purple felt like the butterflies in her stomach when she saw the person she had fallen so deeply for. It felt like lightheadedness when she made first contact, when fingers brush and eyes meet.
White was innocence. It felt like a veil over her, hiding her from the big bad world. It felt like the world around her had become simple, there was nothing to worry about and she could simply be alive.
And then there was black.
Black was death. Or so she suspected. She had never felt black, the darkest she had gone had been a shade of light gray. She wondered what it felt like.
She didn’t want to feel it.
