“Heeeyy…. sorry we’re not open yet. Early bird doesn’t always get the worm, my friend,” Ben called out to whomever when he heard the chime of the door. “Wait…” he grabbed the sign and looked and then looked at the time. “Shit.”
“I guess I am open. I just woke up so pardon the confusion. You need anything?”
“Don’t worry about it. I was just checking in to see whether I could use your phone? It seems I forgot mine at home, stupid me.”
“That’s exactly what I want to call it.”
“Alright then. You have great style, it looked amazing.”
“Really? Huh. That is weird, and to be honest, I don’t think it’s possible. Like, there has to be something she likes doing. I am a mess and I still liked reading and eating.”
“It’s the truth. Maybe she pretends not to like anything, but either way, she doesn’t seem to have hobbies other than partying.”
“Or my side,” she countered with a cheeky grin before turning around to watch him, hands on her hips before she let them fall down her sides and walked up to him. “I’m glad you’re here,” she said and gathered her hands behind his neck before she pressed a lingering kiss to his lips. “Busy is good, yes.” She agreed with a nod, happy to hear things were good at the cinema, not that she would have thought otherwise. Grinning at the mentioning of Effie, she couldn’t help wonder when she got to see his daughter again. She was a lot of fun, after all. “Yeah, I think that’s a really good sign. Unless she’s having a party right now, as we speak.” She raised an eyebrow teasingly, but then shook her head with a soft laugh. “Yes, you are very correct in thinking that. Do you have something in mind?”
His hands easily found her hips as she moved towards him, pulling her a little closer as their lips met for a lingering kiss. “I’m glad you want me here.” He replied in a quiet voice, lips curled up slightly as he watched her beautiful face, unable to take his eyes away from it. Not that he wanted to. “Oh, I don’t think so. She can hardly get to the bathroom on her own. It turns out she doesn’t have a very high pain tolerance.” Lucas chuckled, brushing a curl out of Scarlet’s eyes to tuck it behind her ear. “Not yet. What would you like to do?”
“It wasn’t funny, it was style.”
“Style? Is that really what you want to call this?”
“Ah… Well, to be honest, I don’t think that she will show interest in a hobby if she knows that’s what you want.”
“She’s never shown any interest in any hobby. Not even when she was seven. How’s that possible?”
“I’m sorry, but I think that is better than lying to you. And yeah, you are right. If you say something she will just get defensive. Kids are weird like that. Hm. What else does she like to do before partying and stuff? Does he have a hobby? Something she liked to do before her rebellious phase?”
“Not really. She used to dance, but she never really cared about that either -- she only showed up to every third practice or so. I’ve been trying to get her to find a hobby for herself, but that doesn’t work out so well.”
Scarlet was happy to see him, which really said it all. She sometimes questioned herself, and whether or not she even knew how to have feelings for someone, but the fact that she was really, truly excited to see him was all she needed for now. “It’s been way too long,” she added, nodding her head and stopping inside the small kitchen. “You caught me on a good day though, I don’t have plans until tomorrow morning, although I’m technically on call from midnight.” She explained, looking around for her work phone. “How’ve you been? And how’s Effie and her ankle?”
“Luck has been on my side for once then.” Lucas smirked, leaning against the doorframe leading to her kitchen. He watched her move, only now realizing just how much he had missed her presence. It was almost ridiculous. “I’ve been good. Very busy at the cinema though. And Effie’s been invading the couch and hasn’t tried to go out again yet, so I’m taking that as a good sign.” He smiled. “So, am I correct thinking we can make plans for the entire day and just do something fun together?”
“Don’t laugh at me, I fucking slipped. I bet you couldn’t do any better.”
You’re right. I couldn’t do that any better. But that doesn’t stop it from looking funny.
Scarlet had spent the morning with her little sister, eating brunch and talking about school and whatever else was going on in Valerie’s life at the moment. It was a nice change— the storm had turned things on its head for a moment, leaving very little time for her to do anything else but work. It felt nice to have almost an entire day off before her shift started again. She had only just made her way home after dropping her sister off, when the door bell rang. She wasn’t sure who to expect, but she definitely couldn’t have been happier when it turned out to be Lucas on the other side. “Lucas,” she smiled brightly, unable not to. “What are you doing here? —come on in.” She said an started walking back in with him.
The moment the door opened and Scarlet stood in front of him, Lucas’ lips split into a wide smile. It was good to see her, the last time had been when the whole storm business had been going on and they had rarely any time to focus on each other. “Hey.” He said, moving inside as she invited him in. “Well, I have the day off and... it’s been a while since I last saw you, so I thought I’ll stop by and see if you’re here and got some time for me.”
“That, or maybe it’s because they’re stoners so she doesn’t want you to get mad at her or something. I don’t know the delicate intricacies of father-daughter relationships, but that’s what I can think of. She is afraid you will tell her that they are a bad influence.”
“Well, that really doesn’t make me feel any better, but thank you for enlightening me. I never tell her anything about her friends, I’m afraid otherwise she’ll just get even more mad. So what else am I supposed to do?”

As opposed to his usual Sundays, Lucas had decided to take the day off and relax. He had been incredibly busy lately, hardly able to keep up with his private life, so after taking a long shower in the morning, he decided to go pay Scarlet a visit. He didn’t even know if she was there, wanting to surprise her in case that she was rather than check up on her by phone first. The weather was nice, not letting on that a storm had happened not too long ago. The sun stood high on the sky, shining bright by the time he arrived at Scarlet’s place and rang the bell, a giddy feeling in his stomach making him hope she would open up.
“That’s a good question. I could do a lot of things, depending of the kind of people she hangs out with. Like say, if she likes hanging out with druggies I could get some people to help me out and pretend we’re from the DEA. We could wear good costumes and everything.”
“To be honest, I don’t really know what kind of people she hangs out with. She won’t let me meet them, probably because I’m too embarrassing or something like that.”
“Somedays I swear my entire team has gone crazy,” Alessia groaned. Her hands moved to rub her eyes but, remembering she had a full face of makeup, changed track and ran through her hair. “Why do they all think kids want another book about personified animals? I swear, if I hear one more person pitch a talking farm animal picture book, I’m going to try to get someone fired.”
“I don’t know, my daughter seemed to like those books.” Lucas said, even if he was mostly teasing, a crooked smile taking over his lips. “But I get where you’re coming from. It’s always great to try something new instead.”
“If you want I can try to scare her, see if that makes her wake up. Even if she isn’t getting high at home, if she was doing hard drugs you’d know, so if she looks good to you then she’s good. It’s super easy to notice when someone is, I don’t know, doing coke or taking adderall if you pay attention.”
“That’s reassuring then, I don’t think she’s taking anything like that. But still... how would you scare her?”
“Ah, typical teenager stuff. Hm, if you think she s into drugs you should check that out. Like, if she is smoking weed then you don’t have a lot to worry about, but if she is doing hard drugs it’d be best to stop her before she fucks up her life. I knew some addicts back in Philly, and their lives weren’t retty at all.”
“You think I didn’t try that before? So far I haven’t found anything, I’m just not sure whether that means she’s not using anything or because she’s good at hiding it from me.”
“I don’t know. It depends on what kind of stuff she likes getting into when you’re not watching her.”
“Alcohol and sex, as far as I know. Probably also drugs, but I don’t even want to think about that.”
