✂ - a vivid memory The room is warm, and it smells of something soft and perfumey, and when he asks his mother, voice muffled by fabric, she answers that they're lavender candles. It's dark under a very thick blanket, but he can still hear Rose just outside, her presence reaffirmed with every click of her knitting needles. Something presses on his back, but it is the familiar warmth and weight of the family cat. The cat proceeds to sit down directly on his head. ↕ - a memory that may or may not have happened There is a pot on the stove and it is boiling, the rolling boil of a kettle filled to the brim with something dark. Smoke (or steam, maybe?) rises into the air in coiling waves, twisting and turning like the grasping tendrils or something monstrous. The scent that cuts the air is too strong to give word to, the smell of something downright profane, and when he asks his mother what she could be making with such dark ingredients, voice small and quavering, she answers with barely a missed beat-- scurrying lice. (he doesn't learn what curried rice is for another several years). And she laughs as she dabs his tearful eyes with a napkin, wringing his tears into the pot for their essence, the flames leaping from its sides as another post begins to shriek and moan a cacophonous tone, rattling and shaking as a spectre tries to break free of its steel prison in a hot white plume, only for Rose to gently and daintily pour its essence into a ceramic cup and sip of its black contents. ♚ - a memory of something paranormal Baldur's cat stares at him. It's something that cats do, occasionally. Then the cat meows softly, as cats also sometimes do, seeking attention. He turns to look and he seed a black ball of fur and a small, shining smile, all gleaming white teeth. He hears it whisper something in a voice so small it's barely there, but when he leans closer, it bounds away, disappearing somewhere in the folds of his blankets.

On some level he kind of hopes he can run into something that makes sense of that night, but really, he's been having a harder time falling asleep. Spooky catgirls will do that to a troll.-

[10:04] CT: *Whether or not Baldur is holding the camera up to his face or not a flash of neon zips by in the distance. Sticks and rocks clutter from the disturbance, like it skid to a stop and it's body visibly turns. Likely to face Baldur. It approaches rather quickly but not nearly as fast as it had been going. Once it got closer Baldur would be able to see the familiar patterns of the paint Kougah puts on

[10:05] LP: -he just sort of stands there frozen as this nyoom zoom happens RIGHT UP TO HIM. he's kinda... well, not used to it, but he's aware that this is what Kougah does, at least. So he just holds up a hand.-

[10:44] LP: -he takes in a deep breath. it's... unusually shuddery, for baldur, shoulders shaking a bit. it's hard to place just what that emotion may be, and his face reveals little, even after he slips his sunglasses off and pockets them.-

[10:44] LP: about her and about how things worked a layer beneath

[10:47] CT: *Looks at Baldur as he takes the breath, even in the dark Kougah can see the shudders. He removes the shirt he'd acquired from Pascal and wraps it around Baldur's shoulders. It is very warm from Kougah's body heat* Hm.... 1 see.

[11:21] LP: -he does another little teensy tiny tap and manages to shake out just a SMALL sample, sealing it back up as he gets up and dusts off his sweater.-

[11:21] LP: -then he walks over to offer it up to him.-

[Sticky-sweet trails attract insects -- namely, a great number of sugar ants that mark the path from the town into the woods. There, the trail is a little more difficult to distinguish, but there are little clay statues nestled against trees here and there that seem to serve as markers for the nigh-invisible path. Into a particularly thick grove, however, the path finds its destination: a dark wood cottage, vines of ivy creeping up its sides and the black metal silhouettes of people posted in various locations in what would serve as the (not especially manicured) yard. There's a sort of worn-in dirt-and-stone path leading up to the front steps, the overhang of the roof decorated with dangling glass, wood, and clay chimes and potted plants. Here especially, there's the faint smell of an ashy, nectarine sweetness. Somewhere distant, there's the sound of trickling water.]

BALDUR: -He is incredibly careful in following the trail of ants, and while he follows for a while in a particularly large sunhat and umbrella overhead, he still has to pause a little every now and then to deal with the heat of too many layers.  Under the shade of the treetops, he is grateful enough to put the umbrella away, though his relief is short lived as he picks up the trail again- shrinking away from the strange silhouetted lawn-art.  He shivers, hesitant, but is soon edged on by the swarm of ants leading the way up the path.

He finally comes to a stop by the door, just under the chimes.  Unable to resist, he reaches up to try to tap one, to hear it ring, too anxious to reach for the door just yet.-

QUINNE: -rather suddenly, the dark curtain of one window is shifting aside to reveal a peeping grey face.-

BALDUR: O-O

BALDUR: -He immediately jumps into the air, retracting his arm and landing several feet back.  He stares at the face in the window, unable to break his gaze.- BALDUR: um BALDUR: hello-o-o-o-o

QUINNE: -another moment or two of staring, and the curtain falls back into place. Nothing happens for another few seconds, and then the front door slowly creaks open. No one seems to be standing there.-

BALDUR: -he glances around, briefly looking at the wind chimes for some guidance.  They jingle softly, which, he supposes, is at least the chime equivalent of emotional support.  Taking a deep breath, he begins to enter the house, trembling as soon as he makes the first step inside. Oh dear.-

QUINNE: -Inside, it's comfortably dark. The sweet, musky scent is clearly stronger here, being the first thing that reaches out, but once the darkness is adjusted to, it's easy to see that this room -- or rooms, some combination of a kitchen and living room -- is foremost covered in insect paraphernalia. Carvings and clay models and preserved casings and jars and terrariums, living and dead and art alike. Butterflies flap around collecting nectar from inside their rectangular living space on a side table, beetles crawl around in a dome hanging from the ceiling. There are, of course, other less insect-related decorations and furniture around, including more clay artifacts and a paint kit strewn on the coffee table, a couch with a colorful knit thrown over the back. In the kitchen area, a good portion of counter space is covered in jars and vials of what appear to be herbs and oils and the like. Toward the back of the area, right in front of her hallway, Quinne is standing, watching him.- QUINNE: )) you made it past the first trial ((

BALDUR: -he jumps again, nearly knocking over one of the many jars, hastily grabbing it before it can fall and shatter, but jumping back AGAIN as soon as he sees its skittering contents.  The jar wobbles to a halt as his eyes widen, and he shakily removes his shades, the darkness enough that he doesn't really need them.-

QUINNE: -she's scooping up the big ol' arachnid in a gentle hold, which he seems pretty used to, and stepping toward Baldur-

BALDUR: -He steps back as she steps forward, and one more step backwards he's stumbling onto the sofa.- that is go-od advice and I am taking it on purpose -he says quickly-

QUINNE: -she doesn't answer, just carefully dumping the scorpion onto Baldur's lap and standing there to watch.- PEPE: -just kinda standing there... Tail twitching a little. Spins around in a slow circle.-

BALDUR: -his mouth opens WIDE in a silent scream- oOo

PEPE: -kinda walks here and there. Gently grasps a claw at Baldur's shirt fabric for a moment. Mostly, he seems uninterested in this whole thing. Eventually, he skitters off Baldur's lap and over the arm of the couch.-

QUINNE: )) he says you can stay ((

BALDUR: -He has the presence of mind to clasp his hands over his mouth in case loud noises start making things get stingy, and when Pepe crawls off of him they sort of don't leave.  But he does manage to nod at her very carefully in understanding.- OxO

QUINNE: -she's just kind of silently watching him again for a bit, mostly because he's adorable, but also for drama- QUINNE: )) what do you want to know? ((

BALDUR: -he slowly removes his hands from his face- O-O BALDUR: do you mean from you or BALDUR: from anything

QUINNE: )) maybe ((

BALDUR: oh BALDUR: -FIDGETS- BALDUR: i would like to know the things i dont already know mostly BALDUR: but maybe also the things I thought I knew but dont because reality is malleable and fragile and our perceptions are as limited as observing the immensity of the cosmos through one of those spyglasses that magnify stuff but make them upside down O-O

BALDUR: -He places his own hands over his ears and closes his eyes as he begins to speak.- BALDUR: all life propagates destruction BALDUR: we are slowly burning from the inside and we feed our dim embers with the flames our bodies make and keep making and never stop making and when I am asleep and dreaming i can feel it burning me inside and it hurts and if i dont feed it with life it will die BALDUR: i dont want to die and i dont want to burn away but it feels like thats all there is ever going to be BALDUR: the stars are burning away BALDUR: it all burns BALDUR: slowly O-O

QUINNE: -obviously, she's actually listening, but she keeps grinding the whole time he speaks. Ignoring people is a skill she's good at. At least, until he stops speaking. she still doesn't look at him, but- QUINNE: )) you think about dying because everything is always dying ((

BALDUR: -he goes quiet for a little while , still clearly nervous and not exactly sure what to do with his hands.- BALDUR: that is a go-od thought -he says after a long pause-

QUINNE: )) maybe (( QUINNE: -After a few more moments, she rests the mortar and pestle on the table again and stands up, disappearing down the hall into the back of the cottage-

BALDUR: oh BALDUR: -should he... Follow?  Did she say anything and he just didn't here, and more importantly, is the scorpion still roaming around on the same sofa he's sitting on?  He kind of just stares at the hallway a while wondering these things.-

QUINNE: -about thirty or so seconds later, she walks back out, some kind of chain dangling from hand with a pendant, wire and pale white stone shaped into a circle. She stands in front of him and offers it out.- QUINNE: )) this is the spell we're going to cast ((

BALDUR: I like how it lo-oks BALDUR: its a nice spell i mean aesthetically um BALDUR: suited to my style of attire O-O BALDUR: -He takes it out of her hands and rubs a thumb along the stone.- what are we focusing our intent on

QUINNE: )) close your eyes, then take all your negative feelings about death and focus them in the stone ((

BALDUR: -He clasps his hands around the stone and closes his eyes, taking a deep breath.-

BALDUR: ok

QUINNE: -she's still staring at him, mostly because that's what she does- )) all the fear and worry (( QUINNE: )) the stone is taking everything (( QUINNE: )) and now it's going to purify it (( QUINNE: )) cleansing your heart like water (( QUINNE: )) it's all clear, and now the stone is filled with your pure life ((

BALDUR: -He thinks about... A lot of stuff he's afraid of, honestly.  It all stems back to those fears.  Burning up.  Disappearing.  Life destroying life, and eventually itself, leaving nothing.  He doesn't open his eyes just yet, though.  Only a few people have ever heard him talk about this stuff.  It was a little... Overwhelming.- BALDUR: -was, anyways.  Now he's not as sure.  He feels different.  Not completely changed, sure, but... Different.- BALDUR: -Like maybe this would actually work.-

BALDUR: -He peeps open one eye, opening his hands to look down at the stone.-

BALDUR: do i keep it O-O

QUINNE: )) yes (( QUINNE: )) you can keep using it (( QUINNE: -it's kind of funny, the urge to be helpful, but it's hard not to want to when he's actually listening.- QUINNE: )) how do you feel? ((

BALDUR: ....kinda nice o-o BALDUR: i dont know if theyre gone forever and maybe they arent but ive never felt this BALDUR: ok BALDUR: about being someone who exists

BALDUR: this was the magic -he stares at the stone reverently, before putting it on so it's dangling from his neck.-

QUINNE: -she doesn't say anything to that, just watching him for a few moments more before scooping up the bowl of thyme and moving for her kitchen- QUINNE: )) I could let you borrow one of my spell books, maybe ((

BALDUR: you have bo-oks? BALDUR: my mother has bo-oks but she never let me see them o-o

QUINNE: )) yes ((

QUINNE: -dumps thyme in a big old POT on her stove-
