Christmas ficlet

I’m a romantic Sherstrade shipper, but this managed to be more paternal so…

Lestrade inspected the small, square, green and red object before him, almost suspiciously.

"What’s wrong?" Sherlock asked. "It’s customary to give a present at Christmas, isn’t it?"

Lestrade sniffed.

"Yeah, yeah, it’s just… it’s never been a custom of yours exactly.”

Sherlock scoffed.

"I can’t partake in a tradition suddenly just because I never have in the past?"

"Well, no, it’s just… it’s a little surprising is all."

Christmas ficlet

I'm a romantic Sherstrade shipper, but this managed to be more paternal so...

Lestrade inspected the small, square, green and red object before him, almost suspiciously.

"What's wrong?" Sherlock asked. "It's customary to give a present at Christmas, isn't it?"

Lestrade sniffed.

"Yeah, yeah, it's just... it's never been a custom of yours exactly."

Sherlock scoffed.

"I can't partake in a tradition suddenly just because I never have in the past?"

Lestrade continued to look at the package, moving it around, trying to hear what was side. Sherlock coughed.

"You can open it."

Oh. Lestrade hadn't realized how long he'd actually been inspecting the present and not opening it.

He carefully opened the package, trying not to rip it too badly, though there was a small tear near the tape.

It was a box for a coffee mug. It was already nice enough of a gift, Lestrade appreciated that Sherlock knew he had a bit of a coffee habit, but it was what was on the coffee mug that caught his eye. He started to snicker.

"#1 DAD" it read

"Sherlock..." was all Lestrade managed to get out before laughing.

"What? What is it?"

"Sherlock, normally your children are supposed to give you that kind of gift."

"A mug"

"Well, more the message"

"What? I can't tell you I think you're a good paternal figure"

"Well, it's more a, uh..." Lestrade trailed off. He knew there was a point where he should stop arguing with Sherlock's logic. "You know what? It's alright. I appreciate it. I'm glad you think I'm a good father."

"Of course you are. I've never seen someone so dedicated to their children as you."

That comment warmed Lestrade's heart a bit.

"Th-thank you Sherlock, that's really nice."

"You're welcome. Now I must be off. Other gifts to give. It is Christmas."

"You get something for Mycroft?"

"I promised to keep my body intact."

Lestrade laughed.

"Alright, alright. Have a happy Christmas Sherlock."

Sherlock simply nodded before leaving.

Lestrade sat back at the desk and looked at the mug. It would be Sherlock to not quite understand the purpose of the #1 Dad mug. Sherlock simply observed something, and saw an object that he thought expressed that truth. Lestrade smiled. He enjoyed the idea that even though Sherlock didn't quite follow society standards for how things were to be done, he did things in his own way, including how he expressed himself.

Lestrade opened the mug and used it to get another coffee.

Sherlock had walked out of New Scotland Yard, a bit irritated. He was satisfied that Lestrade liked the mug, but he was upset (Not that Sherlock would use that word to describe how he felt) that Lestrade didn't realize that the mug wasn't about him and his kids. He'd have to tell him later.
