She hugged him tightly back. “It’s no problem. You newsies are some of my first friends- I owe y’all.”
Mush laughed and ruffled her hair. “You know we got your back no matter what.”
"Good," Lucy smiled & patted her hair down. "And I'll have yours. All of you. Although as a tiny girl I'm not sure how much I could do," she laughed.
Mush smiled. Her words had shocked him a little bit, but at the same time made him feel better. “Well God knows why ya chose to be my friend of all people, but I’m real glad ya did.” He hugged her. “Thanks Lu.”
She hugged him tightly back. "It's no problem. You newsies are some of my first friends- I owe y'all."

Mush nodded. "Alright... and thank you in advance. Really Lucy, I owe ya one."
She shook her head. "No you don't owe me at all. It's just... think of it as a thank you. For being my friend and all." Lucy waved it off, not wanting to get sappy.
“Lucy…no. I’ll get better, okay? I’m not gonna die, I promise,” Mush said stubbornly.
“You need to rest! Whether you want it or not, I’m giving you enough to spend a few days resting! I’ll even buy like, all of your newspapers!” She retorted, crossing her arms.
Mush sighed. “Alright fine,” he mumbled. “But I’m gonna pay you back as soon as I get back sellin’.”
Lucy rolled her eyes & sighed. "Fine." Hopefully he'd forget. "As soon as it stops raining I'll go and get it. You can stay down here until then."
"Lucy...no. I'll get better, okay? I'm not gonna die, I promise," Mush said stubbornly.
"You need to rest! Whether you want it or not, I'm giving you enough to spend a few days resting! I'll even buy like, all of your newspapers!" She retorted, crossing her arms.
She frowned. “Don’t you have a friend who can back you up, or savings? At least for a week? I mean… I can give you money for a little if you need it. Don’t say no if you really need it Mush. It’s no problem.”
“Aw, Lu…I can’t accept that,” Mush said, shaking his head. “I have a bit saved up, maybe enough for two days of food and lodgin’, but that’s it. So I’ll just take it easy fpr those two days and hope to God I get well enough to sell the third day, deal?”
Lucy stared at him. "I'll go get it. And you? Will take. The damn money. Alright? You need to get better Mush! You could probably die if you don't get any better."
Mush nodded. "I'll do my best, but I really need to start sellin' again when I go back..."
She frowned. "Don't you have a friend who can back you up, or savings? At least for a week? I mean... I can give you money for a little if you need it. Don't say no if you really need it Mush. It's no problem."
Mush shook his head. “I dunno, I been coughin’ a lot and I’ve had a lot of pain in my chest. I just been feelin’ real weak and I’ve been havin’ weird chills that make me shake a lot and I can’t ever catch my breath, I feel like I’m suffocatin’ all the time.”
She bit her lip. "It sounds like you have pneumonia..." She put her head in her hands, muttering. "Ugh what did it say about pneumonia?" Lucy looked up thoughtfully. "Well, make sure you sleep a lot, drink a lot of liquids- no alcohol, okay?- and don't smoke." She half smiled. "If you don't feel better in a few days, go to a doctor. I don't know what else to do though. There's not a cure or anything."
Mush shook his head. "I think it might be a little somethin' more than a cold. There's somethin' not right with my lungs. I can't do much without gettin' tired and coughin' my head off. I thought about seein' a doctor, but...I dunno."
Lucy frowned & tilted her head slightly. "Tell me everything that's been wrong with you lately. Maybe I can figure it out. If not, I'll send you to a doctor, no ifs, ands or buts!"
Mush laughed before coughing a few times, covering his mouth with one hand. “I’m sick as a dog, so I might as well act like one.”
Lucy pointed a finger at him. “No excuses. You’ll be getting better, if you do what you’re supposed to!” She flicked him with the towel one last time.
Mush smirked and ruffled her hair. “What am I supposed to do?” he asked, laughing a bit. “I ain’t no doctor.”
"I'm no doctor either, but from what I can tell so far it's just a cold," she rolled her eyes & patted her hair back down.
Mush laughed before coughing a few times, covering his mouth with one hand. "I'm sick as a dog, so I might as well act like one."
Lucy pointed a finger at him. "No excuses. You'll be getting better, if you do what you're supposed to!" She flicked him with the towel one last time.
“Okay, just don’t fall,” Mush said, letting go.
Lucy had risen out of her seat slightly to pull, so when Mush let go, she stumbled backwards, but made sure to stay upright- just to prove him wrong. “See? I didn’t fall!” she smirked.
Mush laughed. “Good cause I didn’t wanna injure you.” His hair was still wet, so he shook it out, little droplets of water flying in every direction.
"Ew!" Lucy shrieked, holding up the towel to shield herself. "You're like a dog, I swear!"
"Okay, just don't fall," Mush said, letting go.
Lucy had risen out of her seat slightly to pull, so when Mush let go, she stumbled backwards, but made sure to stay upright- just to prove him wrong. "See? I didn't fall!" she smirked.
“Uh huh…” Mush said, laughing again, but keeping a firm grip on the towel.
Lucy tugged harder, insistent on getting the towel away from him. “It’s true, quite true. Austin is the only charmer for me,” her laugh coming out slightly strained because of her desire to rip Mush’s towel away.
Mush laughed, but kept a hold on the towel, afraid if he let go that Lucy would go flying backward.
She rolled her eyes & let out a frustrated sigh. "Would you let go already?!?" she snickered slightly.
“You’re my friend, obviously not!” she joked, trying to grab his towel from him.
“Uh huh…” Mush said, laughing again, but keeping a firm grip on the towel.
Lucy tugged harder, insistent on getting the towel away from him. "It's true, quite true. Austin is the only charmer for me," her laugh coming out slightly strained because of her desire to rip Mush's towel away.
She rolled her eyes, blushing only slightly. “Of course you’re good looking! I’m just saying it has more impact on the other girls than on me! I mean, they talk about you all the time!” Lucy laughed & popped him on the top of his head lightly.
Mush popped her on the arm with his towel. “Sure, sure, you’re immune to my charm,” he teased.
"You're my friend, obviously not!" she joked, trying to grab his towel from him.
"I'm not hitting you with my fists, I'm hitting you with a towel," Mush said back, smirking. "And are you trying to tell me I'm good-looking?"
She rolled her eyes, blushing only slightly. "Of course you're good looking! I'm just saying it has more impact on the other girls than on me! I mean, they talk about you all the time!" Lucy laughed & popped him on the top of his head lightly.
