HNC induction day - photo safari
the completed cyanotype
(ps sorry for the spam lol)
post production - cyanotype part 2 (week 5)
after completing my first image, I then moved onto the flipped one (I had already changed it to black and white and adjusted the contrast) and made a new layer
I used paint bucket tool with the same colour of blue
I then selected the blending tool and choose overlay
reducing the opacity to around 43% to darken the feathers
then flatten the image
then change your background to a light grey and click on fx at the bottom, then select stroke
this is to create a bolder around your image, but not too big (6 px should be good enough) choose a similar colour to the blue you used (I ended up making mine slightly darker) I then flattened my image after pressing ok
next I created a new canvas, making sure it is 30 inches (width) and 16 (height) and 300 pixels/inch in landscape
once you have created your new canvas you select the move tool and drag your images onto the canvas
then rename your layers (blue feather and white feather) and use the ruler to make sure it is lined up correctly
then go onto fx again and click stroke, this is to create a bolder for your canvas
I made the thickness of my bolder about 120
I then flattened the finished canvas and saved it on my computer
post production - cyanotype part 1 (week 5)
I realised I hadn’t shown the process of making the cyanotype, so I decided to redo it - this time showing each step.
the first thing I did was open the sample image of the feathers and created a copy by duplicating it.
I then flipped the copy image horizontally, to mirror the original.
I then went back to the original image and changed it to black and white.
after that I adjusted the contrast (but not to much otherwise you will lose the detail of the lighter bottom half of the feathers)
I then inverted the image and created a new layer
I then selected the paint bucket tool and choose dawns recommended blue colour (0b189a) making sure the foreground colour is at the front
then click the paint tool on the image
after that I used the blending tool and choose screen
I then reduced the opacity to around 43% to achieve a darker blue
I then flattened the image and went onto image size
make sure it is in inches and that the resolution is 300 pixels/inches
colour management task - post production
what is gamut?
a gamut is the whole range of colours
what is a colour space?
a colour space is a defined range of colours
what two colour spaces do most DSLR cameras offer?
sRGB and adobe RGB
what colour space can most computer monitors display?
sRGB is the most common
if you switch from sRGB to adobe RGB on your camera what colours will you see an improvement on?
the saturation of the reds and blues get a lot brighter
when you change the colour space in photoshop what does it do?
it changes the hue and saturation
name a larger colour space than adobe RGB
ProPhoto RGB
what can happen to a digital image if you map colours to a really large colour space?
it can become slightly too over saturated and overexposed
For last weeks studio class we were to bring in some of our best printed photographs to review them for our portfolio. We received feedback from our peers on our photographs which helped me consider some of my best images.
These are some of my strongest images which I may use in my final portfolio.
Some things that I would like to revisit in folio 3 are, still life, portraiture, product photography and macro photography (oil and water)
sweet like chocolate - on location shoot
For my chocolate on location shoot I shot some chocolate brownies in my kitchen on a chopping board. I used the natural sunlight peeking in from my window in this shoot. I feel that this lighting method worked well because it gave the brownies a warm glow to them.
editing process on adobe bridge and photo shop. I shot in camera raw and jpeg and chose the camera raw files because the images had a much warmer tone which is what I was aiming for. I enhanced the brightness and decreased the shadows.
top 4 edited
e-zine - final edited images
apologies for the long post lol - these are some of my final edited images, I edited them using adobe bridge and photoshop. I added a grainy effect on all my images to show how my rabbit sees and also edited out some of the colours that my rabbit is colourblind to such as red

creative chocolate photography - strawberries (7/2/22)
for this studio class we photographed chocolate in a creative way. I brought in strawberries to incorporate with strawberry chocolate. For this lesson we shot in both jpeg and camera raw and I picked 3 top images.
I found it quite difficult to find strawberry chocolate images without just finding chocolate covered strawberries so these were the best ones I could find. I took inspiration from the lindt stock image and wanted to lay out my strawberries in a similar way.
first I took photographs with the strawberry lindt truffles but I felt like it wasn’t a interesting enough composition (editing process on camera raw & then photoshop to get pure white background)
first image final outcome
I then found these strawberry shaped chocolates that Dawn had kindly brought in and thought they would go perfect with my strawberries. (editing process - camera raw, enhanced contrast, shadows and texture. photoshop - levels to get pure white background and then used the spot healing brush tool to clean up any marks/scratches on the chocolates so that they appear smooth)
second image final outcome - I feel this image looks too warm toned due to the enhanced contrast I did
I still felt like something was missing however so I carefully added some chocolate chips in the image to make it more eye catching to look at. (editing process same as above but this time I lowered the contrast instead)
third image final outcome - I feel this one is the best out of the three and could be the final one I choose. I especially like how shiny the chocolates look and overall has a better composition as the chocolate chips draw your eyes in all around the image now.
For this weeks location class we were to make a collage - I found a old lush magazine I had from christmas time and chose that to cut out because lush is a environmentally friendly brand that fights against animal testing which I thought would relate to my topic in some way.
The work in progress vs the finished collage

My practice e-zine featuring the best images I have so far
E-zine contact sheets what I have so far
for my first contact sheet I did the day in the life of my rabbit taking photographs from a very low angle to show how she would see the world and I also took some photographs with her in them
for my next contact sheet I experimented with scanography, I scanned my rabbits various food items such as food pellets, treats and hay and I even scanned her feet! (which was very hard lol)
this is my best scanography image, I really like how this one turned out

For my studio class tomorrow I will need to bring in:
A variety of different types of chocolate to photograph
Some latex gloves incase I need to handle the chocolate (to prevent my fingerprints getting on the chocolate)
Some props to make my photographs more interesting such as sugar or cocoa powder
Post production - today I learned (28/01/22)
In today’s post production class I learned how to use 3 different tools in photoshop - the blemish tool and the dodge and burn tool.
first I used the blemish tool to cover up some of the marks that were on my packaging
(after using the blemish tool)
I then used the dodge tool to brighten up the letter C on my packaging (the dodge tool lightens parts of the image whereas the burn tool darkens)
