Vanessa Lam’s conceptual identity for the Center for Land Use Interpretation presents an incredibly thorough and engaging piece of branding albeit for an organisation that never commissioned her work. If they had perhaps the client would have inhibited her impressive designs, but let’s ignore that notion for the time being. Vanessa’s branding takes universal topographical pattens as its inspiration, expanding these simple marks across a wide variety of print collateral, digital media, exhibition and exterior design, giving the organisation an instantly recognisable visual presence. Coupled with beautifully complementary brand colours and a stand-out sans serif she succeeds in making rather a dull-sounding organisation immediately more approachable. But it doesn’t stop there, Vanessa has also proposed a variety of interesting digital solutions including an app that allows users to map their surroundings using their samrtphone’s in-built GPS and keep field notes on their own personal travels and interactions with the landscape they inhabit. Now all we need is for someone at the Center for Land Use Interpretation to give Vanessa their business and none of this beautiful work will go to waste.
