Aliki Brandenberg was born in 1929 and is an American author and illustrator of children’s books. She has authored and illustrated over 50 books that have been translated into languages and printed all over the world. She publishes under her first name, as Aliki.

Aliki was born in New Jersey to parents who had immigrated from Greece. Her first language was Greek. She showed artistic skill early on, and her parents encouraged her burgeoning talent by enrolling her in drawing and piano classes. She attended the Philadelphia Museum School of Art, and after graduating in 1951, began work as a commercial illustrator for JC Penny. After her time working in New York in their display department, she returned to Philadelphia to begin her freelance career.

関西のひなあられはなぜしょっぱいの？

東京生まれ、東京育ちの私はしょっぱいひなあられがあるということを最近まで知りませんでした。初めて知ったのが去年です。

去年そのことを書きましたが、関西のはしょっぱく、関東は甘いひなあられです。

しょっぱいものが好きな私は今年は甘いのだけではなく、しょっぱいのも買うぞと思い、食べてみると甘いのより好きかもなんて思いました。

そこで今回食べてる最中に疑問に思ったのが、どうして関西のはしょっぱいの？

それで早速調べてみました。

関西風ひなあられの由来　

「涅槃会（ねはんえ）」と言われる、お釈迦様が亡くなった日にお寺で行なわれる法要にお供えされるおかきが、ひなあられのもととなっている説があるそうです。

京都では、直径1cmほどのおかきに醤油や黒砂糖などで味付けしたお菓子の「花供僧（はなくそ）」をお供えします。そのおかきが京都から関西に広がったそうです。

毎年私が買っているひなあられは精華堂霰総本舗です。有機のひなあられで、関東風と関西風の両方あります。どっちも美味しいです。

Chicken & Harb PRETZ

香味チキン味のプリッツ

Yess. Chicken and Harb. If you’re wondering, that is not a misspelling by me. If you look at the photo I took of the package you’ll see that that is what is written on the front. Japanese people are so good at spelling aren’t they?... All well.

パッケージに英語で「Chicken & Harb」と書いてあった。Harbは間違ったスペリングです。本当はHerbです。

This is CHOU KARIKARI PRITZ Chicken & Harb.

I bought this because of the weird flavor and because it was 30% off. If you don’t know PRETZ has a lot of different and sometimes unusual flavors. I tried it and I actually liked it. The sticks are skinnier than usual PRETZ. The skinny sticks I thought were perfect for this type of flavor. Also it’s fun to eat and makes you not want to stop. It has a strong smell and you smell the chicken more then taste it. What you do tase is mostly just the herbs. It was seriously good and I would like to get it again.

まっとにかく、レビューに入りましょう。

変な味に惹かれたのと、30％OFFだったので買ってみました。食べてみたら、意外と好きな味だった。スティックはいつものPRETZより細身で、この細いスティックがこのフレーバーにぴったりだと思いました。細いから食べていて楽しくて止まらなくなってしまう。チキンの味というよりハーブの味が強く、匂いがチキンだと思いました。また買ってもいいなと思いました。

There is also a CHOU KARIKARI PRITZ Scallop & Soy Sauce flavor. According to this blog post I read (which is in Japanese) these two flavors came out in March 8, 2022.

知らなかったひなあられの味の違い

今日、三月から残っていたひなあられを食べました。食べている時、関東風と書いてあるのをみて、関東風じゃなかったら何？と疑問に思いました。

調べてみたところ、知らなかった！

ひなあられって関東風と関西風があるみたい。東京に住んでいる私はひなあられって甘いものとばかり思っていました。けど、関西風はしょっぱいせんべいなのだとか。なんでこんなこと知らなかったんだ？ あと、関西のにはチョコボールが入っていることもあるみたい。私にはチョコボールってなんか変と思いますが。それは自分の意見です。入っているのと入っていないのがあるみたい。

よく、私が買っているのには甘いひなあられの中に醤油味のしょっぱいのが少し入っています。しょっぱいのもっと欲しいなといつも思っていました。しょっぱいものが好きな私は、少し嬉しい発見をしたような気持ちになっちゃいました。来年の雛祭りは関西風のひなあられも買ってみたいです。

この二つが私のよく買っている関東風ひなあられです。左写真の製造者を調べていたところ、関西風も売っているみたいでした。これずっと食べてるのに今になって調べてるのちょっとバカみたい... と思うところも。来年のひなまつりが楽しみです。

A few days ago I went to the Pompeii exhibit at Tokyo National Museum.

一昨日 東京国立博物館のポンペイ展に行ってきました。

思っていたようにとても良かったです。写真を撮っていいということだったのでいっぱい撮ってきました。写真が撮れるのがちょっとびっくり。嬉しかったです。博物館、美術館など、いつも写真がとれたらいいのにと思いました。とてもいいプロモーションにもなるし。

The exhibition was as good as I thought it would be and I loved it. You could take photos which is very rare for an art museum. I was quite surprised and quite happy. So, I took a lot.

展示してあるもの全てが素晴らしかったです。ポンペイがどれだけ進んでいる街だったのかが、使っていた日用品や、工芸品、食べていたものなどからよく分かりました。ポンペイでは日常生活の全てを美しくしたいと思いそうした、いろんなことでとても豊富な街だったんだなとこのポンペイ展は教えてくれました。もちろんポンペイに住んでいた全ての人がそうだったわけではありません。お金持ちと貧乏の差は大きかったと思います。けれど、工芸品を見るとアーティストには仕事のいっぱいあるいい街だったのかも、なんてことを想像しました。

Everything on display was wonderful. I could see how advanced Pompeii was from the daily necessities they used, the crafts they made, and the food they ate. This Pompeii exhibition taught me that Pompeii was a city that wanted to make everything in daily life beautiful and was very rich in many things. Of course, not all people who lived in Pompeii were living like this. However, looking at all the art, I was imagining that it might have been a very good town for artists with lots of jobs. But you probably had to be really really good at it.

Nippori Takoyaki Takeout “継承”(Keishō)

They sell very tasty takoyaki and some are a little unusual for Tokyo. This time I ordered たこダシ(Takodashi) and regular Takoyaki.

I live nearby and saw the place and was interested so about two weeks ago dropped by on the way home to buy some for dinner. When I got there there where no customers, but while I was waiting for my takoyaki, three other people came in. The place is very small and only about four customers could come in at a time. The people running the place and the other customers were friendly, and the place too had a good friendly atmosphere. I really liked both kinds of takoyaki. Especially the Takodashi. I think that this takoyaki place is going to become a staple in my house and I will definitely be going back there to try the other takoyaki on the menu.

たこダシ (Takodashi) 8 pieces

Instead of the sauce on top you dip the Takoyaki in dashi.

明石焼(Akashiyaki) 8 pieces

Unlike Takoyaki, Akashiyaki (Tamagoyaki) is made by adding not only wheat flour but also jinko(じん粉, refined wheat flour from which only the starch is extracted). The addition of jin flour makes the dough more tender, which is a characteristic of Akashiyaki. Also, as the name "Tamago-yaki" implies, a lot of eggs are used in the batter. Instead of Tako(octopus) it has Ebi(shrimp).

視覚障害者が耳で聴いてコーヒー豆を焙煎！

23日の東京新聞の夕刊の一面に「耳で焙煎 視覚障害者に道」という記事がありました。面白いと思い、今回はいつもと違う投稿をしようと思いました。

私は小さい時からカフェをやりたいと思い、ずっとそれが夢です。だから、コーヒーには興味があります。特に興味があるのが、オーガニックだったり、国産栽培、近くで焙煎してるところや、今回のこの記事のようなコーヒーを焙煎している人たちと、そういうのに惹かれます。この記事を読んですぐに私は自分のカフェで出したいと思いました。出せたら出したいな〜...

この記事を読んですごい！と思い、ワクワクしてしまいました。

日暮里のたこ焼き店 「継承」がおすすめ。

私は近くに住んでいて通りがかりで知り、今回夜ご飯にと、初めて家の帰りに寄ってみました。着いたらお客さんはいなかったけれどたこ焼きを待っている間に三人も来ました。せまいお店で四人がマックス。みんなは入れなかったけれど、店の人もお客さんも優しくていい雰囲気のお店だなと感じました。

いってすぐ注文した後に店長の一人がYouTubeにこの店が出だことをなんだか不思議そうに言っていました。YouTubeの動画を見て店に来た人がその日は多かったそう。私も帰ってなんだろうと調べてみました。下の動画がそれです。

ネットでもっと調べてみたら、荒川区102にも載っていました。

今回はたこダシとたこ焼きを買いました。どっちもとても柔らかくて美味しかったです。残ったダシを飲んでみたらそのままでもとても美味しかったです。ダシにつけて食べるとまた熱々のたこ焼きが少し冷めて食べやすくなります。

近所に熱々の手作りのたこ焼きが買えるようになってとても嬉しいです。うちの定番になるような気がします。

日暮里 手打ちうどん あかうの梅しそみぞれ

あかうのうどんはもちろん、サイドメニューも全て美味しく、とてもおすすめです！

うどんは麺からスープまでとても美味しくて私は行く時いつもとても美味しいから飲まないともったいないと思い、美味しいなと思いながらいつのまにか全てのんでいます。

The Udon here of course is very delicious but also all the side dishes are also very delicious and I recommend everything at Akau.

The udon is so delicious, from the noodles to the soup, that whenever I go there, I'm always drinking and finishing all the soup in my bowl.

If you’re coming to Tokyo or you live here and love udon or just Japanese food in general then I highly recommend this place.

Eating Homemade sourdough bread every morning. This one is 60% whole-wheat. It’s so tasty that I feel like I’m in heaven.

今日升本のマクロビパーフェクト弁当を食べました。私はベジタリアンやヴィーガンではないけど、この弁当気に入っています。とても美味しくておすすめです。

This is a big peach I ate with my parents just yesterday. I thought we ate the last peach of the year last time which was 14th of last month. I thought peach season usually ends around when summer ends, But to my surprise another peach arrived. This year has bin a great peach year here in Japan. We were able to eat a lot of peaches. Peaches are my second favorite fruit after Nashi (Japanese Pear).

We get most of are groceries delivered to us by a delivery service called 大地を守る会(DAICHI WO MAMORU KAI) were they sell organic produce from around Japan. And that’s how we got are big peach that we ate yesterday. I was surprised and very happy to be able to eat another peach. It was delicious and perfectly ripe. Thank you peach and farmers for a perfect peach year. 🍑

これは昨日食べた大きな桃です。10月に桃が届き、驚きました。そんなことあるの？　あるんですね... 今年の夏はとてもいい桃の季節で、桃が結構食べれました。桃は梨のあとに2番目に好きな果物です。

私の家では、ほとんどの食料品を「大地を守る会」の宅配サービスで届けてもらっています。昨日食べた大きな桃も大地からきたものです。この桃とても美味しい桃でした。桃と農家さんたち、素敵な桃の年をありがとうございました！🍑

[ 私のことをダブルと思ってほしい... ]

こんにちは！

私は東京に住む日本とアメリカの20代のダブルです。

なぜ、私がダブルと言ってハーフとは言わないのか、理由は「ハーフ」という言葉では自分を十分に表現しきれてないと感じるからです。

今ではけっこう「ダブル」を聞いたことがある人が多いかもしれません。

「ダブル」は訳すと倍、「ハーフ」を訳すと半分になります。

私は何かの半分なんかではない。

ハーフと言うと私はどっちかでなければいけないの？と少し思ってしまう。

悪く思って使っているわけではないと思うけれど私的にはあまり好きではない。

それだったらミックスはどうなの？と思うかもしれません。

ミックスは混ぜるや合わせるという意味。

確かに私は二つの国が混ざってできている。

だからそうかもれないけど、私は日本人でありアメリカ人である。

分けて言うこともできる。

私的にはなんか違うなと思う。

やっぱり一番好きなのはダブル。

だから、みんなにハーフやミックスではなくてダブルと言ってほしいです。

本当は何も言わないのが一番いいんですけどね。

他の国(西洋など)ではダブル(ハーフ,ミックス)は普通のことであり、「あっ、あなたハーフなのね」などそういったことを言うことはない。

それが嫌いという訳ではないけれど、何も言わなくていい日本になったらいいのになとも少し思います。

このブログではだだ自分を表現したいと思っています。最近ハマっていること、ネットや新聞で読んだもの、自分の思ったことなどいろんなことについて書いていきます。

ダブルだということ以外に私はカメ好きで、料理をすること、食べること、写真を撮ること、音楽を聴くことや映画, ドラマを観るのが好きです。

特に好きなのがイギリスのドラマで、一番好きなのがドクター・フーです。
