Our pool has always been pretty special. Located 40 meters above the ocean, it has a fabulous infinity effect. The whole pool is also tiled with nature stones, this in combination with the waterfall gives you the feeling you are swimming in a private lagoon, instead of an ordinary swimming pool. Most of us have seen the Yellow Lipped Banded Sea Krait (Laticauda colubrina), during a dive or snorkel trip at Lumbalumba Resort - Manado They live in the sea mainly to find food. Like sea turtles, they are reptile and have to come up to the surface to breath. They can stay down a maximum of 30 minutes and it is not rare to see a Sea Krait surfacing for air. But what is not often observed is one going on land here. We are not really a beach resort, but we have some beach during low tide. And now and then we see one crawling on the beach. They do that to nest but also to digest food and drink fresh water. In fact, adult Sea Kraits spent half their time on land. Yesterday our guests Anneray and Marko made their last dive at Muka Kampung in Bunaken. The dive lasted exactly 69 minutes and they counted exactly 69 turtles during the dive! Last night our 'Lady of the night' (Epiphyllum oxypetalum), flowered! The "Lady of the night" is a plant that rarely flowers. And when it does, only at night. So if you are not there, you miss it. Before dawn, the flower closes again. It is actually a species of cactus. The smell of the flower is very strong and sweet and attracts bats who take care of the pollination. Breathtaking sunsets from our pool area. Though we don't have real seasons in terms of warmer and colder temperatures, (we have more wet and dry), the sun does change its position. Just like on any other place on this planet. We have spectacular sunsets year round but the best ones are between April and October. If their is one animal you will definitely see while diving or snorkeling with us, it will be a Green Sea turtle (Chelonia mydas). And not one, but dozens! Many of them also huge, up to 1.5 meters long. They can reach ages up to 80 years so if you encounter one of the big ones you can be pretty sure he or she was already around when scuba gear was barely invented. That we have so many of them in our region, does not mean that the species is not endangered. Worldwide there are many threats. The human population often does not make it easy for them to survive. In certain area's hunting, poaching and egg collection is common. But also pollution, habitat destruction, entanglement in nets and boat strikes are important factors of their decline in numbers. We do a lot to protect them here and the fact that we have so many of them in our park, is proof that it works. Undeniable, is the Mandarin-fish or Mandarin Dragonet, (Synchiropus splendidus), one of the most beautiful fishes in the world. Whereas many other marines species try protect themselves by camouflage, the Mandarin-fish seems to do the opposite. With the strikingly, bright colours it seems difficult to hide. Still is it a smart strategy to stay alive from predators. In this case the vibrant colours send out the message: 'Don't eat me. I am poisonous!' This is somewhat true but it is more that they taste real bad. There is a believe among divers that Mandarin-fish can only be seen around dusk. That is not true. They are active on the day like many other fish. They only thing they wait, for the sun to set, is mating. They make quite a show of that and it is always one of the high lights of a dive holiday, to be able to observe that. For many years we had Mandarin-fish in our house reef. Then suddenly, they were gone for about 2 years. But last week, we spotted them again. The Wire Coral Crab, (Xenocarcinus tuberculatus), is exclusively found on Black wire corals This picture made by Björn, is quite special because the crab is not well camouflaged yet. Normally, they are difficult to see as they take on the same colour as the wire coral and even cover themselves with polyps. Beside that, are they only 2 cm big maximum. In our region they are not so rare but in general it is not so easy to take good pictures of them. The Thorny Seahorse (Hippocampus Hystrix), comes in various colours. We see them in green, red and brownish but mostly bright yellow, as in the picture. This picture was taken inside our jetty in 1 meter of water. We have some seagrass there and it is one of their favorite places to stay. They are quite big with 15 cm and specially when they are yellow, not so difficult to find. Though they are not so rare in our region, the species population is under attack. Apart from a lot of marine life, we also have some special fauna on land. One of them is the Sulawesi Crested Black Macaque (Macaca nigres). There are in fact 7 different species and only found in Sulawesi. Unfortunately, it is critically endangered, specially the one we have in our region. The reasons are mainly that they have been heavily hunted for food in the past in combination with habitat loss. In Tangkoko Forest Nature Reserve, they are relative save and is the population growing. We organize excursion to the park and the Macaques are almost an almost 100% guarantee. One of them became very famous in 2011 when he grabbed the camera of a photographer and made a selfie (see second pic). Unintentionally, the monkey caused an international row when court cases were started between the owner of the camera and animal rights activists. The camera owner claimed the copy rights of the picture but the the activists thought they belonged to the monkey. To find a pair of Harlequin shrimps (Hymenocera icta) is always a top price as they are quite rare. They feed only on Starfishes so look out for them when you see one. Even only 5 cm in length they are still able to kill and eat Starfishes much larger then themslves. They simply flip the Starfish on its back and start eating the softer tissues. They normally don't stop until nothing is left. Depending on they size, it can sometimes take weeks. So once we have spotted them, we can probably show them to you for a few weeks on a row. The black, or Many-toothed garden eel, (Heteroconger perrisodon), can be found living solitary but most of the time, you find them in large colonies. From a distance you would first think that it is a field of sea grass. But when you come closer,  you see the field suddenly disappearing. When you have passed and look behind, they are up again. It is typical garden eel behavior to hide in the sand when something bigger than themselves comes close. And they do it also together. Only about 10 to 15 cm sticks out of the sand but they can be a big as 50 cm. In the sand their bodies are in contact and that way they can warn each other for danger. When you swim into a sandy patch, there is a big change you see them. For many divers an snorkelers, the Red lion fish, (Pterois volitans), has in recent years gotten a bad name. That is because of its presence in the Caribbean seas. The thing is that it does not belong there and is in fact an invasive species. Probably trough the aquarium trade it ended up in that part of the ocean. Because it had no serious predators it started to flourish and became very dominant. Because they are quite aggressive predators, they became a threat to other species and the Eco system of the Caribbean reefs. On our reefs we don't have this problem.  Lion fishes belong here and have enough natural enemies to keep the population under control. This is a close-up of a Black-spotted Puffer fish (Arothron nigropunctatus). The only thing that justifies its common name are the tiny black spots as other wise they come in many colour variations. Puffer fishers can inflate themselves up to twice their size by simply swallow water or air. This is an effective defense mechanism. But if it does not scare the attacker away  and becomes lunch or dinner, there is no happy ending for the predator. This puffer fish has a final ace up its sleeve. Inside it stores tetrodotoxin which is one of the deadliest poisons around when digested. But for us divers and snorkelers, there it holds no danger and is always a thankful object to observe.
