Dialogue that gets Scarier when said while Smiling!!!

The villain does a long monologue explaining their entire evil plan to the hero while the hero is tied to a chair. buddy. BUDDY. You have been planning this for twenty years and now you're just going to explain all of it to the one person who wants to stop you. While you have him. In the chair. Why. Why are you doing this. Finish the plan first and THEN monologue. You absolute disaster of a supervillain. This is why you always lose.

A book you hate teaches you more than a book you love. The book you love you absorb passively, it works and you feel it working and you move on. The book you hate you interrogate. Why doesn't this land. Why do i not care. Where did it lose me and why. You become a diagnostician. You start understanding the machinery from the inside by watching it fail. I have learned more about pacing from books with bad pacing than from anything else. Read the ones that frustrate you and take notes.

Dialogue from a dark past!!

⟢ "I'm not the person you knew. I need you to understand that before we go any further."

⟢ "I did what I had to do to survive. You can judge me for it. I already have."

⟢ "There are things I've done that I can't tell you. Not because I don't trust you. Because I don't want you to look at me differently."

⟢ "I left because staying would've destroyed you. I know you don't see it that way."

⟢ "Don't make me into something noble. What I did wasn't noble. It was survival."

⟢ "You want to know what happened? Okay. But you don't get to take it back once you know."

⟢ "I've been running from that version of myself for five years. And here you are, dragging it back into the light."

⟢ "I was a different person then. I have to believe that. I have to."

⟢ "You think you know what I came from. You have no idea."

⟢ "I'm not asking for forgiveness. I stopped deserving that a long time ago."

⟢ "The things that kept me alive back then would horrify you. They still horrify me."

Hidden identities IDEAS!!

𓍼 The thing about lying for long enough is you forget which parts are true. He's been this person for six years. He knows their sister's name and the way they look when they're almost asleep. He doesn't know, anymore, whether the man who loves them is real or just the most successful performance he's ever given.

𓍼 "You know, don't you," she said. Not a question. He'd been wondering when she'd notice. "Yes," he said. She nodded slowly, like she was rearranging something inside. "How long?" "A while." "And you stayed." "And I stayed." She looked at him for a long time. "Why?" He thought about all the complicated true answers. "Because it didn't matter," he said. "It didn't matter compared to everything else."

𓍼 She'd built this life brick by brick. New name, new city, new everything. Spent years learning to breathe without looking over her shoulder. And then he walked into the coffee shop and looked right at her and said her real name, the old one, the buried one, and every brick came loose at once.

𓍼 He knows three things about himself that nobody in this room knows. He goes to parties. He shakes hands. He answers to a name. He is very good at this and it has never once stopped being exhausting.

𓍼 "Tell me something true," she said. He looked at her across the table. He wanted to. He wanted to so badly he could feel it like pressure behind his sternum. He smiled instead. "I like this restaurant," he said. She looked at him like she knew. She looked at him like she'd always known. He thinks maybe she had.

𓍼 She practices in mirrors. Has done for years. The name, the history, the easy way of saying it like it's always been hers. She's perfect at it. She's been perfect at it for so long that some mornings she looks at her own reflection and for a half second doesn't recognize the woman looking back. She's starting to think that's not the life she was supposed to be living. She doesn't know how to find the other one.

𓍼 "You could've told me," he said. "I know," she said. "Why didn't you?" She thought about it. Really thought about it. "Because you looked at me like I was good," she said finally, "and I didn't want to be the one to change that."

TIPS FOR WRITING GRIEF (AGAIN)!!!

⟢ ⟢ ⟢ LONG POST!!! ⟢ ⟢ ⟢

⋆˙⟡ Grief is not sad all the time and that will mess your character up more than the sadness does. There are going to be hours where your grieving character forgets. Where they're laughing at something stupid on their phone or annoyed about traffic or genuinely hungry and thinking about what they want for lunch and then it comes back and the forgetting makes it WORSE. The return of it after a moment of normal is its own specific violence. It feels like betrayal. Or it feels like proof that you're not grieving right, that you didn't love them enough to remember every second. Writers keep their grieving characters sad in every scene because it reads as respectful and consistent and it is WRONG. The grief that ambushes you in the cereal aisle is realer than the grief you perform at the funeral.

⋆˙⟡ THE STUFF!!! nobody talks about the stuff. Someone dies and suddenly there is a BODY and there are OBJECTS and both of these things require immediate logistical decisions that do not pause for your feelings. What do you do with their half-finished cup of tea. Their reading glasses on the nightstand. Their voicemails still on your phone. Their shampoo in the shower that you cannot bring yourself to use but also cannot throw away so it just. Sits there. Getting lower somehow. Did someone use it. Did you use it without noticing???? the material reality of someone's absence is brutal and specific and most grief writing floats above it in abstraction like feelings are the main event. The feelings ARE happening inside a body that is standing in a house full of objects and that matters. SO WRITE THE OBJECTS.

⋆˙⟡ Grief makes people act completely out of character and everyone around them handles that badly. Your character might get mean. Might get inappropriately funny. Might make a terrible financial decision or sleep with someone they shouldn't or stop showering or clean the entire house at 3am for the fourth time this week. Drief does not make people into better, softer, wiser versions of themselves on any reliable schedule. Sometimes it makes them into someone they don't recognize and that is terrifying on top of everything else. Snd the people around them (friends, family, whoever) they want the grief to be legible. They want it to look like grief is supposed to look so they know what to do. When it doesn't look right they get uncomfortable and then they get scarce and then your grieving character is also somehow dealing with the secondary loss of people who couldn't handle it. which is its own thing.

⋆˙⟡ Someone died and your character didn't like them very much. Or loved them and also resented them. Or is relieved and then immediately guilty about the relief. Or is grieving someone who hurt them, someone with whom things were unfinished in a way that can never be finished now, someone who they had been estranged from, someone who they were about to reconcile with, someone who they had been slowly losing for years before the actual death so the death was almost anticlimactic except that it closes the door in a way that slow losing doesn't. Grief for a complicated person is complicated. You grieve who you wished they were alongside who they actually were. You grieve the relationship you deserved and didn't get. None of this is clean. None of this resolves. Stop writing grief like the person who died was beloved and simple. MOST PEOPLE ARE NOT SIMPLE.

⋆˙⟡ The body keeps doing its thing and that's horrifying. You know what happens the week someone close to you dies? you get hungry. You get tired. You wake up at the normal time. Your body does not know. It has not been informed. It wants breakfast and it wants to stretch and at some point it is going to want things you feel like you have no right to want right now. The physical continuation of your own life in the immediate aftermath of loss is one of the stranger things a human being has to experience and almost nobody writes it. Your character needs to eat. They need to sleep. Their back hurts. They have a headache that won't quit because they've been crying and dehydrated for four days. They are a body doing body things in the middle of the worst thing that has ever happened to them and those two realities exist at the same time with no resolution.

⋆˙⟡ Anniversaries and dates are only half the ambush. the random Friday is the other half. Everyone knows about the first birthday without them. The first holiday. The one year mark. Those dates are braced for. Your character knows they're coming and steels themselves and sometimes that even works. What nobody warns you about is the random Tuesday in March that isn't any significant date at all except that something small happens: the light is a certain way, a song comes on, they see someone wearing the same jacket, and it is somehow worse than the anniversary was. Grief has terrible aim. it does not respect the calendar you've organized it into. it goes quiet for weeks and then destroys you on an unremarkable Wednesday because you drove past a gas station you used to stop at together. Write the random Tuesday. it's realer than the anniversary scene and it will devastate people who know.

⋆˙⟡ People say insane things to grieving people and the grieving person has to just stand there and take it. They're in a better place. Everything happens for a reason. i know exactly how you feel, when my dog died--and your character cannot say anything because this person means well and grief has a strange etiquette where the bereaved is somehow responsible for managing the comfort of everyone who comes to comfort them. The grieving person ends up performing okayness for the people who came to check on them. Ends up reassuring people. Ends up saying thank you for coming when what they want is for everyone to leave and also for no one to ever leave. This role reversal is so common and so rarely written and it is one of the most exhausting parts of early grief. Your character is drowning and spending energy making sure everyone else feels good about the life jacket they brought.

⋆˙⟡ The person who died keeps getting fixed in time while everyone else moves. This one is strange and i don't see it written enough. Your character ages. Changes. Has experiences. Develops opinions. And the person they lost stays exactly the same age they were, exactly the person they were, forever. Which means the gap between who your character is now and who the person was gets wider as time passes. You become someone they never knew. You have thoughts you can't tell them. You reach an age they never reached. Eventually you outlive them. You are older than they ever got to be. And the version of them in your memory is younger than you now. The relationship you carry continues to evolve even though only one of you is still here to evolve it. That is bizarre and sad and completely human and almost nobody writes it. WHY??? :///

⋆˙⟡ Sometimes grief makes people feel closer to the person they lost than they did when they were alive. This sounds counterintuitive but it is real. You finally understand them. You find the journals, the letters, the things people tell you at the funeral that you never knew. You have time to think about them with a clarity that the busy mess of being in relationship with a living person doesn't allow. You miss them in a way that is also a kind of intimacy. The relationship after death is one-sided and strange and ongoing and real. Some people feel the presence of the dead vividly for years. Some people talk to them. Some people make decisions based on what they think the person would have wanted. it's just the relationship continuing in the only form it still can. And it can be written seriously, without irony, without it being a sign that the character is unwell.

Writers age differently than other people. Not physically. Psychologically. You spend so much time inside fictional timelines and other people's memories and completely imagined emotional histories that your own life starts to feel like one of several possible versions. Like you're aware yours is the one that actually happened but you're not always sure it was the right call.

Random Character Traits!!! Part 6

⟡ Has friends from every phase of their life who have never met each other and never will

⟡ Maintains relationships across decades with the consistency of someone who simply decided to

⟡ Collects people the way other people collect things, with genuine care and no particular system

⟡ Has a person for every situation and knows exactly who to call for each specific thing

⟡ Befriends the person standing alone at every event without making it feel like charity

⟡ Remembers the names of people they met once three years ago and asks about their specific life

⟡ Has a whole constellation of people who consider them their closest friend without comparison

⟡ Keeps in touch with people through years of silence by picking up exactly where they left off

⟡ Has an ex who is still one of their closest friends and it is not complicated even slightly

⟡ Knows someone everywhere they go in a way that cannot be fully explained

⟡ Introduces people to each other so well that those people forget the introducer was involved

⟡ Has made a friend in every waiting room, queue, and lobby they have ever occupied

⟡ Keeps relationships alive with no agenda other than that the person is worth knowing

Writers have two modes at a bookshop.

Mode one: pure joy, this is a temple, i am home, i could stay here forever.

Mode two: paralysing existential dread because there are already so many books and they are all already written by people who got there first and the shelves are full and what are we even doing.

You enter not knowing which mode you'll be in. Sometimes it switches mid-aisle. The fiction section is genuinely dangerous for us.

Deathbed confessions!!

⟡ "I need to tell you something," she said, and the heart monitor beeped steadily and outside the window it was an ordinary day , "I need to tell you something and I need you to not say anything until I'm finished."

⟡ "I wasn't who you thought I was," he said. She squeezed his hand. "I know," she told him. "I loved who you actually were." He cried then, first time in thirty years, and she held his hand until the crying stopped and then kept holding it after.

⟡ She told him about the night she almost left. Twenty-three years ago, the bag she'd packed, the door she'd stood at. He listened and then he said, very quietly, "I know. I found the bag." They looked at each other across thirty years of not saying it. "I'm glad you stayed," he said. "Me too," she said. "Me too."

⟡ "I lied to you," he said, "about where I was that summer." She already knew. She'd known for years. But she let him tell it, let him have the unburdening of it, because some confessions aren't about the listener. Some confessions are about dying clean.

⟡ "I was so angry at you," she said, "for so long, and I wasted so much of it being angry and now there's no time and I'm still a little angry and I love you so much and I don't know what to do with either of those things."

⟡ He told her about the money. About where it came from, all those years ago, how he'd built everything they had on something he'd never been able to say out loud. She was quiet for a long time. Then she said, "Did you do it for us?" "Yes," he said. "Then stop," she said. "Just stop. I already know the rest."

⟡ She asked him if he was scared. He thought about lying. He'd spent his whole life not admitting to things like that. "Yeah," he said, "yeah, I'm scared." She moved closer. "Me too," she said, even though she was the one who was fine, even though she'd be walking out of here.

⟡ "There's a letter," he said, "in the left drawer of the desk, behind the insurance papers." She told him she'd find it. She did. She has read it so many times the paper is soft at the folds. She keeps meaning to write back. She hasn't figured out the address yet.

⟡ She told him she'd loved someone else once. Before him. Right up until him. He thought about how to feel about that and decided it didn't matter, decided the only thing that mattered was the hand in his and the time they'd had and that she was here now, telling him, because she trusted him with all of it, even the parts that weren't his. Especially those parts.

⟡ She said I love you seventeen times in the last hour. He counted. He counted because he needed something to do with his hands and his brain and the terror of it all. Seventeen. He will never in his life hear those words without hearing her voice saying them, stacking them up, spending them like she finally had permission.

UGLY HONEST DIALOGUES!!!

⟢ "I'm not angry. I'm past angry. Angry was six months ago. What I am now doesn't have a name yet."

⟢ "You want to know what it felt like? It felt like drowning in something you poured."

⟢ "Don't you dare cry. You don't get to cry. That's mine. You don't get that too."

⟢ "I have thought about this moment for so long and now that you're here I just feel tired. So tired. Like the anger finally ate itself."

⟢ "You broke something fundamental in me. Just—something that worked before doesn't work anymore."

⟢ "I used to pray you'd come back. Then I started praying you wouldn't. Funny how that works."

⟢ "You want forgiveness? Stand there. Keep standing there. Maybe in ten years I'll have something for you."

⟢ "I'm not the mess you left behind anymore. But god I was. God you should've seen what you left behind."

⟢ "There are nights I wake up and I'm so angry I can taste it. It tastes like metal. Like something that should've healed."

⟢ "You told me I was too sensitive. I believed you for years. That's the part I can't forgive. That I believed you."

⟢ "You never hit me. You want a medal for that? You never hit me and somehow I still flinch."

⟢ "I'm not a tragedy. I refuse to be your tragedy. What you did was ugly and ordinary and I will not make it beautiful for you."

⟢ "I was a child. You knew I was a child and you did it anyway and I have spent my entire adult life cleaning up what you made."

⟢ "Stop explaining. Every word out of your mouth is just you loving yourself more than you ever loved me."

⟢ "I don't want to hurt you. I want to unhappen you. There's a difference."

⟢ "You know what's funny? I still defend you sometimes. Habit, I guess. Old dog stuff. I hate myself for it every time."

⟢ "I survived you. I want you to sit with that. I survived you and you don't even know what that cost."

⟢ "The version of me that loved you is dead. I watched her die. It was slow and it was ugly and she deserved better."

⟢ "You took up so much space in my head for so long. The rent you owe me. God, the rent."

Okay so i see writers mess this up constantly and i need to talk about it. Introverts and extroverts are not "shy vs loud." That's not what it means and if you write them like that your characters will feel like cardboard. Introvert means you lose energy in crowds and find it alone. Extrovert means the opposite. That's it. An introvert can be the loudest person in the room. An extrovert can be soft-spoken and gentle. The behaviour is not the point. The energy is.

Real thing that changed how i write: I started asking "what does this character think is wrong with them" and separately "what is actually wrong with them." Those two things are almost never the same. She thinks she's too much. She's actually terrified of being too little. He thinks he's bad at commitment. He's actually just never met someone he trusted enough. The gap between their diagnosis of themselves and the real thing, that's your character arc right there. you don't have to explain it. just write both.

⟢ "I don't know how to let people in without also handing them a weapon. So mostly I just don't."

⟢ "The worst part isn't the bad days. The worst part is the okay days that trick you and then drop out from under you."

⟢ "I keep waiting to feel like a real person. Like any minute now it'll click and I'll know what everyone else seems to know."

⟢ "I am so angry and I have nowhere to put it and it's been living in my chest for years just eating."

⟢ "I don't want to be fixed. I want to be seen. As I am. Broken edges and all."

⟢ "There are things I did to survive that I'm not proud of. There are things I did to survive that I'd do again."
