also i just rewatched the ODAAT s3 arc where Schneider relapses and remembered why I hate this plotline. I think the episodes are extremely well-written and acted, thoughtful and sensitive etc. The problem is the Al-Anon mentality, honestly.

Schneider says "I had 8 years sober and now I'm back to square 1" so obviously he's ashamed and miserable. And Penelope just...validates that? Bc that is the AA pathologizing perspective, you're always an alcoholic but you still gotta try. You're always fighting temptation. You are always wearing the hairshirt of a sinner.

But what if she said "8 years sober is amazing! You had 8 great years, proof you're not a failure and can be sober again"? Those 8 years are an accomplishment and worthy of celebration in and of themselves. Even if he doesn't get another 8, or even another 1, he still had those years and they mattered.

Every day healthy could be considered a triumph, not a battle. It's such a different perspective. A healthier one. One that centers possibility, not shame
