LIFE AWOKE IN THE NEXT ROOM; with it brought a sense of something warm to nina’s chest. she was NOT DEAD. NOT YET. it wasn’t a lot to go on ──────── especially when natalie started to freak out, which was a reaction nina had been expecting and yet was in no shape or form prepared for. eyes the colour of magic stared bleakly around her, empty and devoid of humanity as PANIC seemed to grip her. nina had been too stunned to cower back and hide, although it would have certainly been the smart thing. ‘ i’m sorry. ’ she too, had wished she was not real, if that was any consolation.
it did not make sense to nina for natalie to be here. this war in general made very little sense, really. fighting for the right to rule over other people was a lost cause, but treating magical abilities as some sort of reason to rule over sentient beings was ridiculous, considering how MUGGLES had evolved in the last centuries. but natalie being here. . . made as much sense as nina being here, if not less. ‘ i’m okay, ’ nina lied, blue eyes blinking through the CRACK on the wall, neck hurting ──────── ' are you okay? are you injured? i’m sure i could make you some. . . thing, if-if you are- ’
she doubted she could make anything good, but could she fashion something? nina had never been one for mind-altering substances, her role in the war withstanding, but she’d create something to help natalie now. the word DOOMED played in her head like a twisted melody. doomed, doomed, doomed, doomed. ‘ we. . . we are not. ’ she said senselessly, trying not to focus on the DESPAIR that echoed off natalie, or on how long she may been locked in there. the signs of malnourishment were evident, unlike nina’s discolouration. natalie was. . . stick thin, purple ──────── GAUNT, really.
nina wanted badly to have doctor chang with her- . . . but that was a luxury they did not have. so she remained there, laying facedown on the horrid floor, unable to help. hero scurried to the spot between her neck and shoulder blade, and nina tapped him for comfort. ‘ we aren’t doomed. i have siblings. ’ yeah, alright, she heard it; maybe it wasn’t a lot to go on. ‘ my dad is a legilimens who knows secrets. my brother is a werewolf. my sister is with the MINISTRY. my other brother is a giant! and somehow. . . the scariest of all is my little sister, or maybe mum. ’ thoughts that kept her sane- . . . ish.
she thought sharing them might make natalie feel better. if nina could be SAVED, then so could she. HOPE was easier to feel when other people were involved. ‘ do you. . . isn’t your- ’ but she couldn’t ask about her family. nina was scared of the answer. IGNORANCE had long been a bliss she’d tried to learn. ‘ um, how long- ’ no, she didn’t want to know that either. swallowing, nina decided to ask the safe question. ‘ do you know if the blocking ever stops? do the shields ever go down? ’ nina could feel them now, TAMPERING with her power; with her magic, weakening it. nina wanted it back ────────
although she couldn’t help but hear the derivative scoff in her MIND at that, her own voice DOUBTING her in thoughts, taunting and scornful. what would i use it for? to go against cass or roman? the echo of disdain from her own self was hard to take, making her lose control; begin to fidget. ‘ if i can just contact the outside world, i. . . ’ she had ideas; a ton of them. but nina didn’t know their location. ANGER, FRUSTRATION ──────── they bubbled somewhere inside of her, long forgotten and long buried. nina was almost glad she was too weak to cry, rolling to face the ceiling.
‘ is it hopeless. . . if you don’t do what THEY ASK? ’ a genuine question, as she sat up, only her fingers near the gap. ‘ i don’t want to die, natalie. ’
