*jokes about making out with you until it actually happens*
lopintnowrites:
Marlene snorts an agreement, squeezing Doe’s hand in return. She revels in the intimacy of their clasped hands, drowns in it for a moment before pulling herself out. Her poor Dorky – always falling for the wrong bloke. It seems almost too obvious now why she never approved of anyone for her best friend. Not that there was anyone good enough for Doe. Not that she was even good enough for the pure badass, the selflessly brave Dorcas Meadowes. ❝That I do,❞ she breathes, her grin tinged with a slight, inconsolable bitterness. She catches Doe fixing her hair out of the corner of her eye, and her glance immediately follows the gesture. The movement is so blithely insignificant – yet somehow cinematic. Merlin. If only James could hear her thoughts, he’d call her a right girly romantic.
The intimate moment between them slides to a close when Doe slips her hand out of Marlene’s, and in the cold she immediately misses the warmth. She’s done it now, upset her best friend and made things worse. She’s famous for that – fucking up, saying the wrong thing. The only thing she’s good for is her spells, and sometimes those don’t even work in her favor. Fuck. Marlene listens to Doe intently, her own brow furrowed empathetically. There’s a tickling feeling at the back of her brain that tells her to take a hand and smooth the line between Doe’s eyes away, to hold her cheek in one hand and kiss her fears and ramblings away. As if that’d ever help, she self-deprecates. She’s never seen Doe kiss a girl, never known her want anyone other than those wankers she’d previously mentioned. No chance in hell for Marlene. She can only dream – and Merlin, dream she does. ❝Me?❞ She finishes Doe’s sentence for her, her frown deepening as she interprets what’s going on. Instinctually she reaches a hand out to rub Doe’s bicep. ❝Blimey, Doe. You’ve nothin’ to worry about, promise you. My family’s nuts for you. Hell, they wish you were a McKinnon more’n me.❞ She stills her hand on her best friend’s arm and lets go of the contact, however sorely she wants to keep holding on.
A bad boyfriend meeting your parents for the first time – it stings more than she anticipated. Marlene can’t help how her cheeks color at the statement, the physical response she has to the imagination of her and Doe as a couple. That in combination with Doe’s fumbling, her embarrassment and need for a cigarette, endears her so wholly to Marlene that she has to dig her fingernails into her palms to stop herself from grabbing onto her best friend by the shoulders and kissing the worried look from her lips. ❝You, Dorcas Meadowes, are being a right silly witch,❞ she proclaims, accepting a cigarette from the pack and lighting it from Doe’s wand. The proximity of Doe’s lips to hers in that small moment is intoxicating, and Marlene’s eyes flicker from her eyes to her lips before letting out a large plume of smoke to her side. ❝because you’re absolutely perfect. And if my family can’t see that, then fuck ‘em. I’ve never liked most of ‘em anyways. We’ll just kip off to my room with a bottle of Firewhiskey and listen to that Muggle insect band and have our own Christmas celebration.❞
Dorcas winces as Marlene finishes her thought, dreading her transparency. Sighing in a quick huff, the exasperation slowly dissolves into returning Marlene’s smile. A soft expression filled with aggravation for herself and pure gratitude for the friend that was perhaps the sole contributor to her happiness. Christ-- where would she be without Marlene, the thought crossing her mind as it had hundreds of times before. ... Very alone. Of that she was certain. ❝Yeah--? Dorcas McKinnon... Sounds nice. Your parents in the market for a quick adoption?❞ She ashes into the bushes, smoke curling from her lips into thick clouds that cover her self-deprecating chuckle, blind once again to the pain her innocent words might cause. Joining the McKinnon brood isn’t quite so far away from her unspoken dreams, if the family were anything like Marlene. Whose energy filled her like a sail, gave her own life direction. Purpose. Marlene, who shared their boundless vitality with someone who might have traveled her life in passivity without realizing what she was missing. Yes...--Marlene was precious.
❝Silly witch,❞ Dorcas echoes and nods vigorously at Marlene’s assurances, eyelashes fluttering as she pulls at her cigarette, fidgeting hands stilling as they settle on her vice. As if the moment the words leave Marlene’s lips they grow weight, become true. Absently, Dorcas reaches for her friends fingertips, which had grazed over her arm in comforting warmth only a moment ago, only to find that she had already pulled away. Funny-- as her skin still burned fiery hot, tingling. At the realization her soft smile fades quickly and she turns, only to meet Marlene’s gaze head on. The cigarettes flair between them with the lightest of an inhale. Brief flashes of a soft reddish glow aren’t enough to reveal the heat of Marlene’s cheek. Even though Dorcas’ eyes flutter over her friend’s pretty features, an appreciative gaze unsure of where to settle before the light dims and its too late. It’s only once she’s turned away that Dorcas can acknowledge a heat dissipating from her own cheeks. It’s easy to attribute the familiar warmth to that special spark of Marlene’s. Where Dorcas was like a modest match, a short-lived, uninspired flame-- Marlene was a wild fire, and had been setting Dorcas alight for years through nearness alone. Dorcas’ hand falls to her lips as a shaking breath escapes her almost winded lungs.
❝You had that Plan B all along. Oh, Marbles, brilliant. I love it.❞ Releasing a contented sigh, Dorcas shifts to bump shoulders with Marls instead and to pull another long drag on her cigarette, humming The Beatles underneath her breath at the mere mention. Nerves soothed by thick smoke and Marlene’s gentle cajoling, Dorcas’s stiffness visibly melts away, her head finally coming to rest on the blonde’s shoulder. She reaches her pale from the cold fingers out into the night, attempting to touch a snowflake that drifts gently past their vision. Beautiful and perfect in the moment as hundreds drift just beyond reach, it only screams of a promise that tomorrow will be a wet and chilly English Christmas. ❝But really, I fully expected the night would dissolve into that anyway.... Now does that mean I know you too well, or are you becoming-- gasp, predictable, Marlene McKinnon.❞ she teases with a full smile that draws out her dimples. And just as she speaks a pristine snowflake floats to a rest on the tip of her finger, Dorcas’ smile shifts into a smirk as she reaches over to brush the icy particle on the tip of Marlene’s pink tinged nose.

The feeling of Doe’s eyes on her warms Marlene better than any coat or blanket. She’s glad it’s cold outside, else she’d have no excuse for the ruddiness of her cheeks. This – these pauses, the moments they’d trade in silence just looking at each other, the blushing, shivering, feeling (at least on Marlene’s part, Dorcas was harder to parse out, as per usual) – was a recent development. She recognized the start of it at the beginning of term, coming back to Hogwarts after the slightly startling personal realization of her sexuality. Of which she still had not to tell her mates – again, another possible factor in this most odd recent development. Curiously enough, the brunt of it happened when she was alone with Doe. Marlene had always felt right about Dorcas, ever since she’d picked the shier Ravenclaw out of a crowd to come practice dueling with her, James, and the other Gryffindors. But what used to feel right has modified into something more than just right, a purposefully unidentifiable feeling. A feeling she’s terrified is hopelessly one-sided - except in these small moments of silence.
Marlene pulls her mind away from feelings and towards the situation at hand. She steals a glance at Doe just as her head settles into her hand, nose wrinkling. Her eyes quickly flit over her best friend’s other features: the wide eyes, pronounced cheekbones, the two freckles dotting the expanse between her cheek and her mouth, and her lips… Marlene’s lost focus on those more than a few times, watching them move as the sound coming out of them blurs. She’s drawn into a losing battle memorizing their curve when a loud crash-bang from the kitchen pulls her out of an embarrassing reverie. A laugh – Michael’s, probably – reminds her of where she is. At her parent’s house. With her best friend. Who’s just avoided her question. But her smile is lovely –
She shivers again at the contact, reaching her opposite arm over to rest on top of Doe’s cool fingers before intertwining them with her own. ❝What’re you saying sorry for?❞ Marlene asks, smiling small and lopsidedly and ignoring the tightening in her chest. ❝Other than not answering m’question, which - rude. You still have to do that. But yeah. Mum’s starting. Matthew’s helping out and Michael’s most likely sticking his dirty fingers into everything. Apologies for that, I’ve told you how much of a wanker he is.❞
Marlene reels back to the point. ❝What’s going on?❞ she says gently. ❝D’you – D’you, uh, wanna go home?❞
Dorcas doesn’t notice the soft smile that breaks over her lips as Marlene tucks her fingers in her’s. She has nice hands. Soft-- gentle as warm skin brushes over her knuckles. But there’s a confidence there, the tell-tale scrape of a dueler’s callouses and not a moment of hesitation. She squeezes, drawing on the girl’s strength as she always has. ❝Oh yeah--? You know my dodgy history of picking out the wankers, Marls.❞ Dorcas lets out a short bark of laughter, brushing back a tendril of hair that manages to find its way to her cheek.
❝Wha--? Fuck. No. No-- of course not,❞ she flings a disbelieving look in the other girl’s direction, nose crinkling to the point a thin line of consternation appears between her brows. She untangles her fingers from Marl’s to draw lithe fingers through a tangled mess of hair, her part disappearing beneath of wave of blonde tresses that tickle her forehead and stone cold cheeks. ❝Fuck-- it’s just.... different. Is all-- I’m not really used to the whole... tradition of things. And I-- well who knows if I can keep up with them. With...❞ you. Her voice trails off as she glances once more to the door, biting at the inside of cheek as another wave of nerves crash over her. At least Marlene liked her. The small mantra that had given her peace of mind for years, gotten her through dozens of ‘Gryffindor Parties’, and plenty of confidence by association. Marlene had imbued her with her own special brand of magic since the moment they had met. And to be here, now, and have the rest of the McKinnon brood watching her through a critical view. Merlin--- if even one of them thought she was ‘too quiet’, or a ‘buzzkill’. Dorcas cut off the rampant and anxiety induced thoughts by stealing a glance in Marlene’s direction, focusing on her concern and the absurdity of it all. ❝Shit. It’s silly, Marls, really. I guess I--- I want them to like me, is all.❞
Grimacing at her utter failure to make sense and knowing that she was thinking much too hard on a simple Christmas dinner at her friend’s house, Dorcas focused on fumbling through her robes to find a light until she found a pack tucked blessedly in her inner pocket. Focusing on the task gave her some distraction from her discomfort, and she presses the paper between her lips with a soft sigh. ❝Want one? Or-- it’s okay right?❞ Dorcas removes the cigarette from her mouth quickly, mouth gaping in mortification. ❝Your mum won’t freak? Fuck-- Marlene, why do I feel like a bad boyfriend meeting your parents for the first time? Ridiculous.❞ Cheeks blazing and refusing to think for another second, she stuffs the cigarette back into her mouth and holds it up to the flickering flame she’s conjured from the end of her wand and takes a deep breath. ❝Tell me I’m being silly. Please.❞

Marlene felt like flying halfway over the bloody moon when Doe finally agreed to come home with her for the winter holidays. It’d only been, you know, seven years she’d be asking. It was understandable for Doe not to want to leave her Da alone for Christmas. Marlene almost didn’t want to think about what her own parents would have done had she decided to stay at Hogwarts for the holidays – something worse than a Howler, if there was such a thing. But Christmases at the McKinnon’s are a feat to be seen, even if you’d seen the shebang of Hogwarts’s decorations. Marlene’s father spends hours charming the house’s many rooms to look like anything from a winter wonderland to a gingerbread house to a reindeer forest (complete with Rudolph-like reindeers. Rudolph exists in Wizarding knowledge, yes.) But that’s nothing in comparison to the food her mother makes, recipes handed down from wizarding matriarch to matriarch, probably since the dawn of time. Marcella finds it disappointing Marlene’s never had much skill in kitchen wizardry, though (in her mind) she believes she makes up for it with her appetite. And then there’s the brothers – Marcus and Michael and Matthew – and when the four of them aren’t arguing or trading insults they’re cracking jokes and erupting explosive, hilarious, important conversation. The house is electric during the winter holidays. And Marlene, even in the first few months of knowing Dorcas Meadowes, knew she’d be an insurmountable addition to the comfortable chaos.
If Marlene could find her. They’d only Floo’d into the house fifteen minutes and she’d already lost her best friend. There was an apprehensive expression on Doe’s face before they’d left to come here, an emotion Marlene couldn’t yet parse out. She didn’t like when that happened, when she didn’t know what Doe was thinking. If Doe was thinking something troubling and Marlene couldn’t help. The only place she hasn’t checked is the back porch, which in retrospect would have been the best first place to look. In her typical, Marlene-McKinnon-has-no-respect-for-personal-space-or-reflection way she swings open the screen door and sees Doe. She releases a breath she didn’t know she’d be holding. ❝Hey. There you are.❞ Marlene shutters the door behind her and climbs up to sit on the porch ledge next to Doe. Their sides touch gently and she suppresses a shiver she passes off to be from the weather, though she should know better. ❝You disappeared on me in there. And it’s freezing out here. What’s up?❞
Marlene’s arrival has her nerves running for the hills, and for those first few moments Dorcas expression is calmed, one corner of her mouth lilting in a content fashion. As usual, she makes no protest to Marlene’s closeness. Her side gratefully accepting the warmth, whereas if it had been anyone else come to invade her space without permission, she might have shied away with a derisive look of annoyance. Instead she settles in, eyes fixed on Marlene’s features despite the beautiful image of a snow blanketed yard, trees white and heavy with snow fall, the snow gently drifting to the ground, and the soft glow of a perfect Christmas Eve evening.
And all she can pick out is it’s nice, the glow that halos Marlene’s hair from the dim porch light.
For some inexplicable reason, a wave of guilt washes over Dorcas and she looks away, a pink tinge developing over the sharp angles of her cheekbones. As she can come up with no satisfactory excuse for Marlene’s perfectly reasonable question, and the truth is far too silly to actually say out loud. She was... overwhelmed. It was common for her to be shaken by Marlene’s confidence in her. Sometimes she still found herself marveling at Marlene’s determination to befriend her all those years ago, the warmth she’d exhibited in inviting a quiet little Ravenclaw girl to all her adventures. Dorcas’ chin plopped into her hand, a small frown line appearing just at the bridge of her nose. And now she found herself at the hub of such warmth. The very core of Marlene’s exuberance and all her siblings who were just as, if not more chaotic then Marlene herself. Such a stark difference to what she knew would be the image at home, her muggle Da sitting down for his evening tea, unmoved by the world as he read from a book in his chair by the fire before bed. Almost to punctuate this train of thought there comes a loud crash from just inside and a burst of sharp laughter that Dorcas could swear she’s heard before reflected a thousand times in Marlene. Her mouth flickers into a smile. ❝Hm. Your house is lovely.❞ And although she means it wholeheartedly, it’s not a particularly smooth dodge. But then again, Dorcas is ill-practiced in withholding anything from Marlene. Her fingers reach for the other girl’s arm in the frosty cold, the comforting touch assuaging some of the confusing guilt.❝I’m sorry. Is Marcella trying to get dinner started?❞
