a/n: HAS ANYONE SEEN THE LIST FOR AO3’s TOP OMEGAS OF 2025😭😭 MEGUMI MY BOY IS AT 23RD PLACE LIKE HELLO WHAT
Megumi Fushiguro had a serious problem. A serious people problem. Anybody- almost everybody, who had even heard his name, knew that the boy did not like people in general.
It wasn’t like he was a recluse.
He just struggled talking to people he respected unless they talked to him first. When the minority of people who would actually work up the courage to talk to him, he’s never knew what to say. They’d assume he wanted to be left alone, so he’s rarely interacted with anyone more than once.
With the sole exception of Yuji Itadori and Nobara Kugisaki, of course.
At first glance, you would never even guess that he, out of all people, would be friends with either of these people, the only rays of hope for the depressed, overworked students of your college. They never brought up how they met (not like Megumi would participate in these conversations), many speculated that at least one was forced to be the others friend.
The truth? They kept each other grounded.
Haha. No, just joking. Yuji and Nobara just didn’t know when to leave someone alone. They followed him around for so long to the point that now, Megumi wouldn’t let them leave anymore.
Cause they knew something about him that would absolutely demolish his ‘scary dog privilege’ image. He wouldn’t just have to drop out, no, he’d have to move off earth.
They knew his number one weakness, and it wasn’t his tendency to slap Yuji across the head every time he was frustrated.
You went to high school together, and he did cross paths with you a few times, being Yuji’s childhood best friend and all, but he never really opened his mouth to talk to you. He first got the chance to even speak to you was at one of the many party’s thrown by Yuji’s whore of a brother. He was lucky Nobara has been dragging you around to parties the last few weeks, cause it wasn’t like you were a party person either.
Shit. He hated how he remembered that.
Yuji was yapping his head off, with Megumi 100% listening, when he spotted you downing whatever was in your plastic red cup. He flagged you down, screaming like an idiot while Megumi yelled at him to shut the fuck up.
“And then my brother grabbed me by the back of my head screaming he was gonna slam my head onto the lit stove- OH MY GOD, ITS [NAME]!!! HI [NAMEEEEEE]!” Yuji gasped comedically loud, waving his arms high above his head to get your attention. Megumi’s face instantly flushed, immediately going to drag his best friend back by the hood.
“What are you doing, idiot?” The fushiguro said, gritting through his teeth.
“Doing god’s work.” Oh, how Megumi wanted to wipe that smug look off of Yuji’s face right then and there. He was about to roundhouse kick Yuji out of the country, but the moment you glanced his way, the boy somehow melted and froze up at the same time. Megumi just wanted to dig a hole to crawl in and die.
Your knees went weak the moment your eyes met his. Nobara caught you from your stumble, steadying you with her arms. You had a crush on this guy since high school, and you weren’t even sure if he knew you existed.
“I think I’m gonna die here if I stay here any longer.” You managed to choke out, covering your ears in an attempt to hide their redness. Instead of complying to your requests, she took advantage of your half-dazed state to drag you over to where the two boys stood.
“Nobara, I’m going to burn your closet-” Despite your (very capable of going through with) threats, she grabbed you by the arm, which was practically on the verge of ripping off. The brunette was scarily strong, and she’d always use that very strength for the wrong reasons.
Unfortunately for the both of you, both of your friends were stronger than you, and they practically hauled you two towards each other. (With no ulterior motives trust)
Nobara and Yuji spent thirty minutes laughing at an embarrassing story about you told by your one and only childhood best friend, who, truth be told, was two minutes away from having his skull cracked open. You stood in between the two cackling hyenas, expression as flat as ever. Did Yuji really find a child almost snapping their leg in half that funny?
Still, as you stood between the two idiots, your gaze still always found its way back to Megumi. It’s not like he was talking to you, or anyone in particular, but something about him always drew you towards him. You could tell he was a good listener, well- if he wasn’t, he wouldn’t be yuji’s best friend in the first place.
You found yourself constantly getting into situations like this after the party. The four of you hanging out, Nobara and Yuji doing some stupid shit, and it always ended with you and Megumi fixing it for them.
For some reason, you two were always at each other’s side. Nobara said you two would always “sit too close together for it to be normal”.
She was just being stupid.
And it was just a stupid crush.
‘Stupid crush’ turned into you to occasionally hanging out alone.
Well- not exactly “hang out”. You’d just enjoy each other’s silence when everything else got too loud for either of you to handle. You’d do small things for each other, even if it meant just saving a seat for you on the bus, or walking you home after one of yuji’s midnight snack runs.
You’d talk to him about everything, cause hell, you wouldn’t be one of yuji’s friends if you didn’t inherit at least one of his traits. And you certainly did guess right, he was a good listener. He’d sit and nod, and maybe even smile if you were lucky, as you went on and on about how your professor was definitely targeting you.
Yuji and Nobara obviously started catching on to the two of you. It was getting tiring for the two of them running around listening to the both of you rant about how perfect the other was, waiting for the two idiots (who were supposed to be the responsible ones, by the way) to confess their feelings for one another. For once, and as much as Yuji hated to admit it, it made him feel smart for once.
They’d look high and low for the two of you around campus, only to find Megumi napping on your shoulder while you studied in the library, unaware of the world. They’d always share this same exact look that said ‘are you sure they’re not dating?’
You looked up, setting your pen down and tugging your headphones out of your ears. You sent them a small wave, careful not to wake the sleeping boy. “Hey guys.”
Yuji strolled over, feigning oblivion to his two best friends acting like an old married couple. “Heyyy, [N/N]…”
Nobara wriggled her eyebrows, making you groan internally. “You two are getting reeeealll comfortable, right Fushiguro?”
His soft snores came to a halt, and he opened one eye to look at his friends. There was a look in his eyes that was telling them that the next time they interrupted his nap, they’d be asleep for good. He closed his eyes once more, snuggling closer to hide his face.
“Eww… you two are disgusting.” Yuji wrinkled his nose jokingly as Nobara pulled out her phone to snap a picture. She was definitely going to send that to Maki.
“We’re just friends guys.” You smiled softly, but not at them, cause you were busy looking at Megumi.
Just friends. That’s what they always say.
What really hit the nail on the head for them was during one of him and yuji’s baseball games. You already seemed like you were avoiding them all morning, only managing to grab your attention by cornering you in a secluded area. You squeaked when they grabbed you by the back of your jacket like they were about to commit a bunch of heinous crimes.
“[Name], why’re you avoiding us?” Nobara threatened, hands on her hips. Man, she was scary.
“Pshh- me? Hiding something from my best friends in the entire world? Never!” You chuckled nervously, fidgeting with your fingers. You only ever had that look when you were oh so obviously keeping secrets from them. The last time you had that look was when you refused to admit that you had a crush on Megumi to the both of them during their last interrogation session.
You rarely hid things from the two. That was… a long time ago.
“Just tell us who you like, [N/N]!” A sixteen-year-old Yuji followed you around like a lost puppy, begging you to just tell him who your crush was. I mean, this was a once in a lifetime event. His childhood best friend, his yapper to his yapper, the first person to match his energy properly, had a crush on someone in their class? Nobara was just as eager as the pink haired boy, being the one you ran to when you couldn’t tell something to Yuji.
“What can we do to make you tell us? We’ll do anything!” Nobara laid out her final offer to you, linking her arms with yours as Yuji joined you at your side.
You groaned, thinking for a moment, before a grin slowly bloomed across your face.
“The two of you have to give up your parking spots when we get our drivers licenses.”
“Deal!” Terrible mistake for the duo, which they will soon find out in a few years time. But that wasn’t more important than the subject at hand.
You grabbed both of them by the hand, sprinting towards your homeroom. Slowly, you crept up to the pair of sliding doors, opening them slightly, just enough for them to see, but not enough for anybody to notice. You raised a finger, pointing at a desk the two knew all too well. There, a head of jet black hair had his face slumped against the desk, either asleep or pretending to be so he wouldn’t have to talk to anyone.
They gasped in unison, but you slammed the tiny crack quick enough to nobody to hear them.
“You like Fushiguro? Megumi Fushiguro?”
Oh boy. How badly they wanted to tell you they were friends with him, and that your feelings were just as reciprocated. It was fine though, you’d find out within this year, right?
For once in his life, a very particular thought came to Yuji’s mind, and it all just clicked. He looked up at you, staring with wide eyes.
You took a step, ready to bolt straight out of there, too bad Yuji was faster. MUCH faster. After a good ten minutes of yelling and struggling (and biting???), they managed to pull you away from your jacket, much to your dismay.
They spun you around, and were greeted with a large number on your back, #12. Megumi fucking Fushiguro’s number written across the jersey that did not belong to you.
“So you two are dating!” Yuji yelled through his loud, booming laugh. “Took you two long enough, am I right?”
You shook your head, smiling at your two best friends. “Guys. We’re just friends, I’m pretty sure we’ll never be anything more than that.”
“Friends don’t wear other friend’s jerseys!” Yuji argued back, leading to a minute long debate on whether wearing other people’s clothes can be platonic or not.
Nobara stood there in silence, tuning out your bickering. Cause she’d always find the little things, things Yuji wouldn’t be able to catch when it came to you. In that millisecond long smile you shot them, there was a hint of sadness. She was catching onto that more often than not nowadays.
Cause although you’d consider yourself close with Megumi, you’d always feel that deep pit in your stomach watching him hang out with his other friends, and he didn’t have a lot of those. Whenever you weren’t around, you’d see him talking to Nobara and Yuji endlessly. It wasn’t like he was all smiley or anything, but at least he was able to keep up a conversation with them.
He was always more on the quiet side with you.
You had already confided with Nobara on the issue, and time and time again, her answer way always…
“He doesn’t hate you, [Name].”
Night after night, you’d sit at the kitchen island of your shared apartment. Nobara was always there to comfort you quietly, with Maki already fast asleep in the other room.
“Hey, you have nothing to worry about. I’m sure that he’s just in a mood, you know how he is.” She couldn’t say any more without accidentally blurting out Megumi’s secret to you.
“Mhm.” You nodded absentmindedly. The pack of cigarettes on the counter told Nobara otherwise.
“Hey-” She blinked, reaching out for the small box. “I thought you quit back in high school.” You instinctively slapped your hand over it, dragging it off the table and down to your lap.
“I did. I just never finished this pack, and I never got around to throwing them out.” You opened the cigarette pack as evidence, but at the end of the day, Nobara wasn’t exactly stupid. You were lying about something, she just couldn’t pin point what.
No. You couldn’t tell her, and you couldn’t tell Yuji.
You couldn’t tell them under your happy, sunshine mask, that your life was slowly falling apart at the seams. If you told them how you felt, they’d tear Megumi apart, and you couldn’t risk that.
You couldn’t tell them what he said.
You were walking home together, as per usual. He walked by your side, insisting that he’d be the one to walk by the roadside cause it was ‘safer’, as he listened to you talk about something Yuji burned in your kitchen again.
Out of the blue, he blurted out something you never thought would come from him.
“You talk a lot, you know that?”
You froze instantly. Damn. Cold much? You knew you were a talker, but hell, you didn’t think you talked THAT much. Luckily for you, you had already made it back to the apartment by then. You waved him off, your goodbye ending way quicker than usual.
He found it odd, but he didn’t think much of it.
Until now. He found you avoiding him, even skipping out on your regular routines.
He slumped down onto the seat next to you in the library, Yuji and Nobara sitting across from you. “Hey, [Name].”
You shot up from your seat, yanking your bag from the back of your chair and slinging it over your shoulder. You pivoted on one heel, disappearing from eye sight in an instant. You didn’t even bother to look back at him.
“The hell?” Yuji muttered, setting down his pencil. “Did you do something? I don’t think she’s ever avoided you, bro.”
“You think?…” He stared at the space where you once sat, zoning out and wondering what he could’ve possibly done that was so bad that you couldn’t even be in his presence.
And it happened again and again throughout the next two months. Every time he’d save a seat for you on the bus, you’d sit somewhere else, even if it was just the seat in front of him. You deliberately changed your route back home so you wouldn’t see him. You wouldn’t even go to his baseball games anymore. You stopped texting him entirely, despite being on your phone 99% of the time.
“Sorry, [Name]!” Yuji hollered, voice echoing as he was getting chased through the halls. He wasn’t exactly looking where he was going, with his eyes focusing on his attacker rather than his surroundings, leading to him accidentally slamming right into your shoulder.
You rolled your eyes. “You’re an ass, itadori!”
You sighed, and only them did you notice a taller figure already standing at your side. Before he could kneel down to pick up the book you didn’t know you had dropped, you fished it off the floor, and you walked away from him in quick, deliberate steps.
He’d do anything to fix your friendship, if you would just tell him what he did. It was honestly starting to piss him off. Running off seriously wasn’t going to make this any better.
The anger faded away quick enough.
He was searching for you, finally about to confront you about avoiding him. He didn’t get the chance to, because when he did manage to find you, you were in the midst of blacking out and tumbling right down the stairs. He ran over to you without thinking, Nobara’s screaming and Yuji’s cursing was all just a blur to him.
You ended up in the hospital that day. Your poor habits of smoking and overworking yourself lead to a deadly mix of chronic tiredness, and today was your breaking point.
He was the first one to visit. He always was.
He rushed in, soaking wet from the rain. The moment he came in, you were already joking with him.
“Gonna lecture me on how smoking’s bad for me? If you’re gonna do it, I’d rather you’d get it over with.” You snorted, chin resting on your palm.
“Why have you been avoiding me?” He heaved, hands clenched at his side.
Well damn. You did not expect that be the first thing to come out of him. He never talked to you, so you didn’t expect him to get straight to the point like that, especially because you had just recovered from your little stumble. You sighed, shaking your head. “I just… you don’t like being around me, do you?”
“What?” He gaped in genuine disbelief, cause that couldn’t be further from the truth.
“You’re always so quiet around me for godsake, I just assumed you didn’t like me all that much.” You sniffled. “Have you seen the difference between when you’re hanging out with Itadori and Kugisaki and when you’re around me?”
He blinked. He had been dragging on for too many years. He wasn’t going to fuck this up. It was either he’d lose you as a friend, or lose you entirely.
“God… no. I don’t think I could ever hate you.”
You looked up at him, the tears threatening to spill urging him to explain what he could possibly mean. Without a second thought, everything he had been wanting to say just spilled out. Everything came pouring out at once, his own words not reaching his own ears
“I love you, for christ’s sake. I’ve been in love with you since, I don’t fucking know, the ninth grade? Shit- I’ve always been more quiet around you cause I-I’m scared I’ll fuck it all up. You’re perfect, more than I’ll ever be, okay? I’ve always been scared to never be enough for you, that’s why I rarely opened my mouth around you. I don’t know, maybe I was scared that you’d leave if I said too much, but fuck, now you’re about to leave cause I’ve said to less- I’m so, so sorry, [Name]. I love you, I’m sorry, god-”
You felt your heart crack as he rambled on. You couldn’t tell if his face was wet from the rain, or if his cheeks were stained with his tears. But there was one thing you did know, one thing you finally realized while you sat in that hospital bed.
He never meant to hurt you that day. He just didn’t know how to use his words.
“Who’s the one who talks a lot now, huh?” You let out a wet laugh, trying to lighten the mood. And the reason you were avoiding him came crashing down all at once.
“I didn’t mean it in a ‘you’re annoying’ way. I meant it in a more… ‘you talk enough for the both of us, and that’s okay’ way.” It sounded way worse when it came out of your mouth than it did his.
“You need to be careful with your words, gumi.”
“Yeah. I really do.” He turned his head away from you, wiping his face.
He was more vulnerable than ever. He had only ever cried once in front his friends, and that was when Itadori got into that skateboarding accident and didn’t wake up for a week. If Itadori ever found our Megumi had cried for him, he would never live that down.
Your eyes widened, and you pulled him into a soul crushing hug. God, his pouty face really remind you of a sad puppy, in contrast to his usual, broody demeanor.
It took him a full four seconds before he melted in your arms from the shock, he tightened his grip around your waist, and you could tell he was trying not to cry from the way his shoulders were shaking.
You rested your chin against his shoulder, gaze softening at the boy. “Couldn’t get rid of me if you tried.”
“Don’t you have a game to get to?- hey!” You squeaked, trying not to make a sound in the empty locker room. He had your back pressed against one of the lockers, his body pressed even closer to yours. He had his face inches away from yours, practically breathing down your neck.
“Oh, shut up. Let me have this before Itadori or kugisaki get a chance to interrupt.” He gritted through his teeth, already moving back to press his lips against yours. After the whole blacking out incident, he had decided to… “keep an eye on you”. He learnt to keep his eye on you in his own special way, of course.
You hated how good he smelled. He had you right where he wanted, and you were where you wanted to be. He grinned against your mouth, and you giggled when he licked your lower lip playfully. His hands had found their way under his your jersey, and just when he started to melt-
The door swung open, and a very enthusiastic Yuji came running in, with Nobara not far behind.
“YO, FUSHIGURO! YOU IN-” He trailed off, the hand he had placed on the door slipped down to his side slowly.
“What the fuck?” Nobara cackled, already making calls to blab to the first contact who popped up on her phone. Catching her two best friends making out before their big game was not on her bucket list for the year, especially considering the fact that you were in the hospital after your argument just a few weeks before.
“Is this why you disappear before and after games?”
Megumi narrowed his eyes at the pink haired boy. “Why? Wanna join?”
He gasped, everything above his neck flushing red. “I AM NOT-”
You stifled a laugh. “it’s okay if you swing both ways, Yuji.”
“We support you-” Nobara grinned, patting his shoulder. Yuji ran before she could finish her sentence, tripping on a few loose pebbles lying on the ground in the process, slamming face first onto the pavement. Nobara stared at Yuji, who was now groveling in pain outside, before turning back to you two.
a/n: all of you better watch out for my next Megumi fic (definitely does not contain incorrect use of inumaki’s cursed speech trusted)
