Things Come Apart // Todd McLellan

McLellan had an obsession with taking things apart and learning about how they work. He created his ‘Lessons Learned Through Tinkering’ into a publication that displays all of the pieces of each object and documents how he took them apart and why. He states that ‘The things we own are the product of great effort’ and tells the audience how he has learnt to appreciate how an object is made and the lengths that the designers and makers go through, something that the user of the product takes for granted. This has given me ideas of how something could be more appreciated, in a less obvious way. You wouldn’t think that dismantling something and taking it to bits would make you appreciate it more.

Unfortunately I am unable to take apart the old tech that I have collected from my personal life because the objects are too precious and are still sometimes used by me and my siblings. However, I feel our generation would definitely benefit from finding out how certain things work and have more of an appreciation for them as a result.

Gameboy Typeface // On Behance

This handmade typeface feels really retro and has more inspiration from the style of the 80′s and 90′s than the actual tech itself but still has relevance to the theme of old gaming and technology.

Making Letters out of Consoles //

As a quick experiment I thought I could make a typeface out of the actual consoles themselves but unfortunately I only have 3 with me and they can’t make all the letters of the alphabet but this exercise did help me to see if letters were hidden in the objects and helped me link letter forms to the consoles that I am using for the content of my project.

Really like how this designer has made all of these individual letters different, yet they are still relatable to each other and work well when put together in the alphabet -- something I need to remember in my own work when presenting my typeface.

Balloon Type // Children’s Campaign

This balloon type is extremely realistic and could be mistaken for real balloons, if I had more time and skills I would want to create all of my letters so that they looked as real as possible, and exactly as the consoles look in real life.

Typefaces Celebrating each Decade // on Behance

Interesting to see what this designer uses to summarise each decade with their decretive type. The colours from the 90s are shown as bright, complimentary colours with funky patterns and shapes to reflect the style of the time.

Rubix Font by Carlos Vigil //

Almost impossible to read but has a similar idea to my font idea where it takes inspiration from the colour, style and shape of an old toy. Creating it into a typeface gives the audience a whole new appreciation for the object and also gives us a sense of nostalgia when we see it, it might be something we’ve completely forgotten about.

Endangered Crafts //

This article on the Telegraph lists crafts that are on the ‘Red List’ of the Heritage Craft Association, and could soon become extinct in the UK as not many people are continuing these skills anymore. The main reason behind these endangerments seems to be technology, we now have programmes such as Illustrator and InDesign that are much easier and quicker. Some crafts that have already gone extinct include cricket ball making, gold beating, lacrosse stick making, and sieve and riddle making.

Previous Beliefs // Extinction

Found these facts about extinction on a science page on Instagram, it’s almost laughable that people used to believe and how different things are now in the modern age. It might be interesting to look into how science has evolved in time and how our views as an audience to extinction and animals in general has changed, similar to my dissertation aims that included “where do our qualities and attributions of certain animals come from?”.

A little while ago, we wrote about powerful advertisements that were designed to raise awareness about important social and environmental issues. But what about animals? They don't have any way to raise awareness about the issues they face, so it's up to us to help them out. These advertisements address different types of issues, but they're all about giving a voice to the voiceless.

By 2050 30 to 50 percent of all the world's species could be heading towards extinction.
