I like to imagine that the way Kayla and Lyra first go on a date goes along the lines of:
Lyra: for someone so small you for sure store a lot of attitude problems
Kayla: ME?? SAYS YOU
Lyra: says ME?
Kayla: yeah. maybe we can find out what the heck your problem is over dinner sometime
Lyra: YEAH maybe we could find out what your problem is- OH

LOOK AT THEMMMMMM OMGGGGG 🥹 absolute cutiesss they found such brief joy and refuge in one another after going through so much sjdkxhxhxj why couldn't it have STAYED THIS WAYYY- it's okay it's okay guys they're actually still chilling on the grass (well Kayla on Lyra's lap more than anything...)
No they aren't.

good morning Kyra nation
I can't believe this is the first post I see for this fandom.
Some people refuse the superior ship in favor of gay ships everytime. It's time to admit that sometimes the straight ship is better
well yeah, you said it. Kayla is BI. bi. meaning she also likes women. and she canonically has a situationship with Lyra??? i don't think shipping them is negating her relationship (later on) with Valas
and hot take: Lyra as endgame would have been so much healthier for Kayla... even if in-canon her being with Valas makes sense, their being together necessitates the destruction of everybody else, including those people that Kayla DID care about
TLDR let people cope and interact with canon in multiple different ways & let people have gay (or straight) ships with bi characters
Have we read the same thing?
Can you ship Kyra, especially pre Valas? Sure.
But can you be SO blind that you forger why it didn't work out in the first place? No.
Some of you will romanticize lesbian relationships SO MUCH that you forget that post relationship and at the start of TAaS they HATED each other.
Are we forgetting abt the class differences? Are we forgetting abt they're clashing attachment styles and traumas?
How they're relationship was an escape from both of they're lives and they were treating each other as a fantasy? Are we forgetting WHY AND HOW THEY BROKE UP?
Can you like it? Sure
Can you SERIOUSLY BELIEVE that it would be HEALTHIER than Kaylas? I can't believe that.
Also the destruction of people she cared abt? All her close friends are dead and the only ppl around her facilitate her misery by encouraging her to stay as the GOB.
You can't seriously see her liberation and newfound freedom as a bad thing. Sure she kills a lot of people and we both know my view on her as a character (see pinned post) but to view that as TOXIC is beyond me
This is from the POV of pre-war/all her friends being dead/achieving goddess status - obviously Kaylas/dryrag makes perfect sense as the story progresses, and their relationship is undeniably one of extremely strong love REGARDLESS OF WHETHER ITS GAY OR STRAIGHT, but that's also because all they have is each other. In every universe.
Considering Kayla in the first part of TAaS, and in the backstory that's revealed (man I really wish we'd get a webcomic focused on that too...), it's clear that she doesn't only lose everyone that's dear for her, but also loses her marbles (it's okay I forgive bbygirl/bbygoddess). So yeah if things had gone differently in that first arc of the story, I could definitely see Kyra happen.
Lyra and Kayla go way back, and as different as they are and every way that they clash, they are also in a way parallels/foils to one another, they've gone through things together, and they've had their ups and downs - but in the end they reestablish a friendship and camaradie, and I'm sorry but I don't think that Lyra is over Kayla, they definitely have their heated and flirtatious moments.
But Kaylas?? Healthy?? Perfect for one another as they are (fave problematic villain protags), I don't think that dooming the entire world in favor of the other and their own goals/whims is HEALTHY. Am I arguing that Kyra is HEALTHIER at all times in the story? NO. I also think that that makes for a more interesting dynamic and potential for their relationship to grow. I meannnn... childhood enemies to childhood friends to kinda lovers to enemies to reluctant companions to friends to maybe better lovers...? That's so many compelling tropes come on you know fandom.
I swear one day I'll write a fic and link you to it.
How does it feel getting beef on your first post?
every deep thinker is more afraid of being understood than being misunderstood
Kaybe not? You ask in your silly confused state. How could it BE Kaybe not?
Bc, my sweet summer child, as much as I enjoy Kayla as a protagonist, I do think A LOT of her choices that led to the story ending up the way it DID are fully and singlehandedly her FAULT.
Think about it? Burning down the circus? An accident? Not really. The curse? Fully selfish. Hell, even later on with the war and her promotion, she COULD have tried harder to refuse it but NOOOO.
So yeah, Kaybe not
Kaybe though, fictional characters - especially a protagonist such as Kayla - shouldn't be judged on the morality of their actions, but in the light of their full life experiences driving their actions and the meanings of those actions for their character and their relation to the world they inhabit. Did Kayla very much cause significant events that led to the ending?? Yeah she for sure did. But to simply assign her all the blame is COMPLETELY ignoring the trauma she's gone through, from her background at the circus to the tavern burning down and everything else... Kaybe just kaybe she was trying her best all of the time but everything around her just kept going wrong and she couldn't keep it together anymore. Even her squad went from a surprising source of camaraderie (even with Lyra whom she previously fell out with! but anyway not my point) to feeling alienated by their happiness when she was struggling and not finding support (where canon divergence with Lyra and the others is so interesting... ANYWAY STILL NOT MY POINT that's for fanfics to explore). Considering all that she's gone through, burning down the circus and the curse make perfect sense for her character, and in my opinion, shouldn't kaydemn her (sorry (not sorry)) because the world is at much as fault as she is. Because maybe the story isn't just about Kayla... so kaybe yes, kaybe she's not a black and white character and kaybe those around her deserve as much scrutinizing.
At this point I think ur disagreeing with me on principle. I don't think all that you said is wrong (for once) but THAT IS PRECICELY MY POINT (my blog is KAYBEkaybenot)
My point is that a lot of ppl side with her on principle BECAUSE she's the protagonist and absolve her if ALL the blame.
My point is that she's not INNOCENT. My profile picture is not red, not green.
Okay, you did literally conclude "Kaybe NOT" though
that being said I see your points and I appreciate the nuance because I do kinda think we're saying the same thing in that vein (for once)
