DARA BIRNBAUM

This woman is most famously know for her video of wonder woman. She chooses to do most of her work with the mass media images that hint at the mythologies of the culture and history. Dara was one of the first artist to create an video with an imagery from mainstream television. This video was one of the first to be so realistic in this genera and Dara helped pave the way for following artists.

I really enjoy how this video conveys that women are wonderful! Women have many different personas but are capable to achieve anything. Just wait one second and we will be there! At the time this video was made I believe that it helped boost woman's esteems and helped them feel like they could achieve anything. So thank you to Dara for creating a splendid video like the Wonder Woman!

Sometimes kids are dealt a hard hand in life and end up doing things that get them in trouble and send to Juvenile Detention. Rosana Palazyan is an artist who works with these kids to try and help them with their story. She asks the kids questions that will help paint a story in her mind and then she creates it in her artwork. She also has the kids paint and create their own interpretation of their lives. This process of art making is quite beautiful. To transform a story that is hard to tell into something that is tangible I can only imagine is extremely powerful. The kids are quite blessed to be given therapy with an artist like Rosana.

This form of art isn't the only kind of art Rosana does. She also does other interpretational projects. But I could the ones where she helped the kinds in the Juvenile Detention to be most heart touching.

THE WOMAN HOUSE PROJECT 1970

This group of powerful women felt like their voices needed to be head. At his point in time women, gays, and blacks were being miss represented in the art museums, so this group decided this needed to change. Women were artists, gays were artists, and so were blacks. To take a stand there was a group of women who came together and created an art gallery filled with with artwork done by female artists. The fist day that the museum was open only females were allowed to attend. Oddly enough museums found that on the first day the artwork had a greater reaction to then the following days.

I enjoyed learning about this project because I feel like any deserving artist should be able to display their work in galleries. The fact that the group of woman banned together to change the structure of the galleries is something to commence. Because of this group I feel today when I view galleries that there is an equal representative of the different artists, whether it be white black, male or female.

My Manifesto

Develop (project, making, created, idea):

Long Beach helped me get a grasp as to what I wanted to do with my career. People that were involved were my mom and my grandma. The setting helped as well because it was a sales area.

I chose to knit slippers out of wool and felt them down. They were green and gray made for a special someone. This allowed me to be creative for someone I love. I was able to create this because a sheep had its coat shorn off and a spinner spin and clean the wool so it was clean enough to work with.

I cooked a meal of stake, potatoes, and veggies to maintain my health. The people that helped me with this were the people who grew the food, the people who harvested it, shipped it, and sold it at the store.

Maintain (relationship, sleep, clean):

I chose to exercise as many days this week that I could so I can keep my body healthy and fit. This helps my mind to have more clarity and feel more at ease.

I was there for a friend because they were having a hard week and felt as though everything was crashing down on them all at once.

I maintained my jobs. Going to school full time as well as working at Louie's restaurant a few nights a week as well as nannying for a family. I do this so I can pay my bills as well as do pleasurable things.

Daniel Joseph Martinez was one of the artist who's work participated with the Invented Community (temporary). The Idea behind all of these project was to bring the community closer together. Martinez chose to not do his work in densely populated areas or areas that were economically sound, but more so he brought his art into communities that were not sustained in hopes to bring some of the community from the surrounding areas to that place to raise awareness. This was most always accomplished by his projects. People from the city would venture into the streets less traveled on to visit his art exhibits.

One main reason that Martinez chooses to produce art like this is because he ponders the question "whether history is being written in terms of the economy, the free market, and the corporate museum, and how artists and individuals can organize an evolving, self-sustaining aesthetic to counter the prevalent paradigm." With his art I believe that Martinez truly wasn't the viewer to ponder the setting and to become more involved in their community, not primarily on their own lives.

Discussion Question

After being in a term of Art Culture Through Politics my eyes were opened to countless different kinds of art forms. I am curious to see what genera people enjoyed the most. So what genera was your favorite that we discussed?

Personally I thoroughly enjoyed pieces of artwork that the artist tried to engage the audience. For example how Rirktrik Tiravanija uses food as his way to engage the public. I feel as though that is a wonderful way to bring the community together and to have them socially interact in a different setting then they are used to. I also enjoyed how the group called HAHA created the Invented Community (ongoing) in which the project was able to continue after the artist has left. Or how Pedro Reyes asked the community to donate all of their excess guns to help create shovels so trees can be planted in the community. I feel as though all of these projects indirectly effect the community in a way that it brings them closer to accomplish one task. For me a community should always be striving to achieve a common goal, and these artist have found ways to bring that community to together. And for that I feel as though they are a great example of a community artist.

This video that I chose is called "Fear Eats the Soul" by Rirkrit Tiravanija and is displayed at the Gavin Brown's Enterprise. This video takes you through the museum step by step and you can actually see how people are interacting with his artwork. There appears to be a lot of conversation between people which I believe the artist intended for. There is one part of the video where there are people making screen prints on shirts for people and I think that this was one of the main attractions. I personally enjoy how part of the artwork is people making a product in front of others. Also Rirkrit also always incorporates a meal for people to enjoy as a part of his artwork. His recipes change every time and seem enjoyed by everyone. I enjoyed watching this video because it actually made me feel in a sense present in this artwork.

The funny thing about my procrastination was that I was almost done with the screenplay. I was like a person who had fought dragons and lost limb and crawled through swamps and now, finally, the castle was visible. I could see tiny children waving flags on the balcony; all I had to do was walk across a field to get to them. But all of a sudden I was very, very sleepy. And the children couldn't believe their eyes as I folded down to my knees and fell to the ground face-first, with my eyes open. Motionless, I watched ants hurry in and out of a hole and I knew that standing up again would be a thousand times harder than the dragon or the swamp and so I did not even try. I just clicked on one thing after another after another.

This video helps describe in detail from the artist himself as to why he chose to create the pieces of art that he did and why he used such basic materials. Hirschhorn seems extremely passionate about his work and has figured his style out very nicely. He likes to set up social environments for people to come and view. His work is funded by the government as well as town funded. Hirschhorn got into the field of displaying politics and culture by working with a group of graphic artist in Paris who were also concerned in those issues. He worked with this group and placed posters with advertisements on them in the streets. After this he began creating his own material. He chooses to use materials that everyone likes to use on a day to day basis and also because the materials are "political, universal, economical, inclusive, and don't bear any plus-value." Hirschhorn is an artist who is once again trying to reach out to the common public and have them interact with his art.

When I viewed this video I was uncertain as to what kind of message I wanted to receive. I did pick up on the fact that he was using common materials and I enjoyed that because I could relate to that art form.

Now here is an interesting post! I don’t know what genre to put this into that we’ve studied in class this term maybe someone else can help.

To me this image invokes taking ones passion to the next level. Or just being on a bike so much that it becomes part of you and can’t sleep without it. Then again it could go back as far as week 1 and Living As Form. “It is a drama, and this is no accident.”

The quote comes from the women on the boat sailing around giving free medical supplies, tests, information to poverty-stricken nations from a boat in International waters.

If this is to be living as form, it could be to get out of our cars and get on bicycles and exercise. The picture makes me smile none-the-less while potentially motivating me to do something like go for a bike ride. It is spring now and all.

I was browsing through what others had posted and this picture caught my eye. It made me wonder what the artist was trying to convoy to the audience. Then I read your interpretation of the piece. I would agree with you that when someone is so passionate about something that in a sense it becomes a part of you. For example my little brother used to love his bike so incredibly much that he would ride his bike till the moment it was time to go to sleep then he would crawl into bed with his helmet on. So in a sense I feel like your passion is apart of you. This was a wonderful interpretive piece to choose.

Surasi Kusolwong - Golden Ghost (The Future Belongs To Ghosts) (2011)

This large installation is a room full of industrial thread waste. Within the thread there are gold necklaces hidden. Viewers are encouraged to look through the thread waste to find the golden necklaces. Once they are found the viewer is welcome to keep their prize. The piece encourages a sense of play because the viewers can climb on the piles of thread waste. The treasures in the thread waste are a metaphor for the consumption at the global and individual level. There is a new standard system of exchange because the necklaces are generously given away.

The most obvious way the piece relates to the class is the interaction between the installation and the audience members. This idea of interaction with the piece can be related back to so many artists we talked about in class such as, Felix Gonzalez-Torres and his pieces of art with candy. The piece by Kusolwong is a great example of relational aesthetics because it looks at a global and individual level. If you were to look at this piece comparing Kester and Bishop’s opinion on relational aesthetics, you could say that neither critic would be in complete support of this piece. Golden Ghost is not a piece that makes you feel uncomfortable and it is not a community service like the two critics prefer.

I found this piece interesting to read about. Imagine going into a room filed with yarn and told that there were countless gold necklaces that could be kept if found. This piece is a great example as you said an interaction with the artist as well as the viewer. Many artist strive to create a project that is interacting and this most definitely is because people are searching for a desirable object. Yarn is hard to thumb through so the artist chose a good medium to keep the audience on their toes.

As a former Catholic, and as someone who even today is not opposed to being called a Christian, I felt I had every right to use the symbols of the Christ and resented being told not to.

ANDRES SERANNO

Seranno is an American photographer and artist who was north in 1950. He worked as an assistant art director prior to creating his first notable piece of artwork in 1983. Seranno choses to create pieces of art that can be extremely offensive to the viewer and lead to angry reactions. He choses to make art using the human body image surrounded by bodily fluid such as urine, blood, or feces. As one can imagine the reactions from the viewer can be endless, he received numerous phone called and two of his pieces (Piss Christ and The Church) were vandalized because people were so outraged. His most famous artwork is "Piss Christ" which sold for $277,000 in 1990. The estimated value for this piece was only $20,000-$30,000 so the piece exceeded the expected value by a tremendous amount. "Piss Christ" is a piece where Seranno took a picture of a plastic crucifix and placed in in a glass surrounded by urine. All of Seranno's artwork is extremely bold and can be extremely offensive. Piss Christ is not the only artwork that has made Seranno famous, there are count els others such as Objects of Disire, The Interpretation of Dreams (White Nigger), Blood and Semen III, and many others. Seranno takes chances with his art, and for that he is well known.

Learning To Love You More

Miranda July was born February 15,1974 and has become a well known American film director, screenwriter, actress, and artist. She is a published author as well with the book It ChooseYou and she has also stared in a film that she wrote and directed. Miranda is an inspired artist who enjoys expressing herself in her art.

Harrell Fletcher is an American artist based in Portland, Oregon who creates interdisciplinary projects. His artwork has been displayed at countless museums such as SF MoMA, the De Young Museum, The Berkeley Art museum, and many more. Harrell is a professor at Portland State University who strongly encourages his students to work outside the studio to create socially engaging art. That is his specialty.

These two artist put their talents together and created a website called Learning to Love You More. Both of the artist’s goals in creating this project was to bring together ordinary people, ask them to participate in assignments designed to generate reactions such as surprise, being touched, motivated, imaginative, or humor. Participants willingly excepted the simple but specific instructions so that their work would get posted to the site. Some of the projects included activities such as making a child's outfit in an adult size, photographing a scar and writing about it, making a video of someone dancing, spending time with a young person, and describing your ideal government. Miranda and Harrall came up with 70 different assignments to all represent different subjects and bring out different emotional responses in people. The final product of their project is a book, Learning to Love, that collectively presents the hard work and effort of all of the participants. The book engages the reader, warms the heart, sparks ideas and inspirations, teaches, and also entertains. Modern day society is tremendously wrapped up with 'reality' programming, which couldn’t be farther from reality. This book refreshes the reader on how real people think, act, and love. Learning to Love is not just a website or a book, it has grown to include exhibits in museums, galleries, schools and senior citizen centers and it has been featured on radio shows and in film festivals. In conclusion, this book was loved by many and has won at least 15 different awards. Learning to Love by Miranda July and Harrell Fletcher is an outstanding representation of art, writing, humanity and love.

Art Worker's Coalition (AWC) New York City

Artist, filmmakers, writers, city representatives and museum staff in New York City joined together in January 1969 as the Art Worker’s Coalition (AWC) to encumbrance the city's museums to implement carious reforms. Their goal was to create a museum that was open to more widely diverse artists and not exclusive to any type of artist. Prior to this meeting, female artists and artists of varied races were not well represented at the museum. The coalition was sparked by the artist Takis as he protested the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) decision to remove his sculpture from their exhibit. Takis wanted to maintain control of the exhibition of his work after pieces had been sold. But because the museum owned his art they didn’t feel compelled to respect his wishes. Another issue that sparked the coalition was the obvious lack of works by black and Puerto Rican artists. Because the AWC placed strong pressure on the museums to address these inequities, the museums finally consented to show some works by artists with more diverse ethnicity. Museums were also forced to take a moral stance on the Vietnam War which resulted in the exhibition of the famous poster AndBabies by My Lai. This poster became one of the most important works of political art in the early 1970's. Another factor that ignited the AWC was MoMA's director Bates Lowry refusal to exhibit a display titled "The Museum's Relationship to Artist and Society". The AWC was outraged and organized various demonstrations directly outside of the museum, attracting hundreds of artists and members of the NY art community. The momentum of these demonstrations caused the museums to finally see the writing on the wall. They and knew they had to respond before museums became non-reputable. Largely due to the pressure from the coalition, museums slowly and against their will changed how they interacted with artists. Once the group was satisfied with the outcome of their movement they quit protesting and the group disbanded in the end of 1971.

Marinetti created one piece called the Futurist Cookbook. In it there were recipes that were not prepared but chose to produce art that had ingredients using color, shape, music, lighting, and ideas, leaving the list and nutrition out of the cookbook completely. One of his recipes was: Aerofood: A signature Futurist dish, with a strong tactile element. Pieces of olive, fennel, and kumquat are eaten with the right hand while the left hand caresses various swatches of sandpaper, velvet, and silk. At the same time, the diner is blasted with a giant fan (preferable an airplane propeller) and nimble waiters spray him with the scent of carnation, all to the strains of a Wagner opera. (“Astonishing results,” Marinetti says. “Test them and see.”) Another recipe is Taste Buds Take Off, this is a soup that is made out of meat stock, champagne, and grapa, garnished with rose petals. Another would be Beautiful Nude Food Portrait: A crystal bowl filled with fresh mild and the flesh of two boiled capons, all scattered with violet petals. So you can see that Marinetti had a enormous imagination and wanted to create food was beautiful to the eye and also could have a aesthetic sense. Marinetti argued that “all sustenance should come from pills, freeing up food to be the raw material of art, preferably to be consumed while listening to the soothing hum of an airplane engine.

As you can, one has to be extremely creative to use his cookbook. This pertains to our class for one because Marinetti was a futurist and chose to show off his radical work.

This Public Art Review has an article about if public art is part of the American dream. The article talks about how a town forms into a city and what they feel should be public art. This article relates the our course of art, culture, through politics in the way of displaying art. There are many different forms of displaying art and largely different media to be seen. Displaying art has always been a hot topic because people view things differently and certain objects might not be received. Art can be very political therefor drawing a large crowd and heated arguments. You never know how an art piece will be reviewed by someone.
