Hey hey!! I’ve been gone for a while, but I’m back! Took a break from traditional art and did some paper Mâché + chipboard and other stuff. The top buggie is a 17 year cicada, the bottom one is a crested katydid. I cannot tell you how much time the first one took lol, still new to this! The cicada was my first try with paper-mâché and chipboard, so I’m pretty proud of it. :)
The bottom one is still a wip tho. Also a picture of my son.
Process for the cicada: the base is a square made from chipboard and hot glue, the legs are flat pieces of chipboard. The eyes were the hardest part of making the body for me. I used small squares of regular cardboard and layered them to give them volume. I painted the body before attaching the wings. The I tried to make the body seem fluffy using lots of tiny brush strokes with different amounts black in them which i was somewhat(?) successful with. I love her little triangle mouth thingy.
My main struggle with the paint is that it’s cheap and cracks a l o t. Had to put three too four layers of paint for it to stop cracking.
With a katydid I used a rib like structure for a base which took hours. I wrapped it in masking tape before poking holes in the bottom with the wire to put the legs in. And if you made it this far, thanks I really appreciate people who take the time to look at my art :)
