people are acting like jakub is genuinely pansexual rep when he's NOTTTTTTTT THIS IS NOT THE TEXT AT NO POINT IN THE SHOW HAS HE EXPRESSED ATTRACTION TO MEN. what showrunners may or may not say don't matter, when a movie ends you can say 2 characters who don't interact got married off screen and it won't be true if there's nothing in the text to actually suggest that. marian and the eggplant are oft sited as #canonqueerrep moments but they're literally not 🙏 there's nothing in the writing to suggest that he's attracted to marian, michal sikorski was just being extra (tho, not exactly horny) and while the eggplant guy is attracted to him, jakub is completely oblivious. across 3 seasons he doesn't seem to know what gay people are or have any particular feeling on the subject. his bisexual mother on the other hand is very scandalised and embarrassed by same sex love, because it's textually relevant to her.
jakub's queerness in s1 was a happy accident that they then decided to amp up in s2 but never actually commit to. which for a priest character this was fine! homosexuality within the church and the convenience of enforced celibacy upon a man of noble birth are a fun concept, his sexuality being a quirky additional detail rather than the centre of his story. s3 not only eliminates homosexuality as a possibility, it reduces him entirely to an erotic fixation on a woman who barely registers his existence. it ignores all his ambitions, every arc and character motivation, for a singular gag that is just Man Horny for Sexy Woman. which even beyond the gay thing is out of character! he had other shit to worry about, people to betray, ladders to climb. it also means that his obliviousness to men is actually proof of disinterest as suddenly he's very attuned to the temptations of women (but not men).
the joke in S1 where he compliments his sisters boobs is about how out of touch he is wrt women and sex and can be read as a classic gay guy tryna fit in moment. but with this new context, this 'proof' that he was bi all along, we're saying he finds his sister attractive. we're saying he's got a predatory side to his sexuality. and that makes all this effeminacy, the limp wristing and pervy behaviours a lot more sinister. the degree to which sikorski affects stereotypical gay behaviours especially after the first season is arguably offensive. the use of the sissy caricature to signal villainy and perversion has been in place since the dawn of the silent film. they explicitly frame jakub as having a deviant sexuality by way of him being submissive for a woman and the fact of this is what's being played for laughs.
having a gay peasant couple with 2 scenes and a kiss is nice but ultimately these are side characters we'll probably never see again and men have been kissing in comedy skits for decades. the main, allegedly lgbt characters have a slim slot for screen time in s3 and it's only in service of het plots. no matter how you try to stick it, scrapping a recurring gay romance in favour of a straight one is homophobic. in any era but especially when the political climate right now is so volatile??? like you can swirl your whiskey and say i Know What You Are i saw your Chanel Boots™ all you want but that doesn't mean that the show actually has an mlm main character because as of s3 it literally, textually does not.
