Choosing an outfit for a wedding in Rome in September!
Well, we survived the night! And now I'm not frozen in terror, I'll tell you what happened. We'd been sat in bed for a few hours, reading our books we'd borrowed from the library. Personally I hadn't felt anything weird, or uneasy about the place at all. And I was actually all ready to settle down for a good night's sleep...
Clearly Gladstone had other ideas...
We were just chatting before going to sleep, about the leper colony on Spinalonga randomly, and half way through my sentence I was very rudely interrupted by a huge BANG from the seating area in our room, it's split by an opening (pic for reference).
It sounded like a window had slammed or something had been thrown forcefully onto the floor.
It shocked us into silence, neither of us said anything or even moved for what felt like forever.
Eventually I was like "wtf was that?"
We bravely found the courage to go check the room ( after much deliberation and tears). Of course there was nothing to see but I needed to rationally decide what it was. I checked the window, shut and locked so not that, checked the door, shut and locked. Nothing had fallen etc.
Then bright idea! There was a door outside our door in the hallway, maybe someone had walked down the corridor and it had banged shut, so I experimented.
But no, Sam said the noise was different.
However, what she did say, which still to this moment creeps me the fuck out, is that the noise the floorboard made when I walked across the room sounded just like the noise we'd heard moments before. I started heading back to the bed, to hide under the duvet until morning.
And as I did so the same bang happened twice! I actually screamed. It was so loud, like someone stomped on the floor and then instantly banged on the wall.
And I know what you're thinking, I just walked across the board again and it banged, but nope, I'd already crossed that part of the floor and was standing in the doorway at this point.
I was shaking and just couldn't move. I was so terrified that if I moved or turned around it was going to do it again!
Sam had to come over to me and hold my hand so I could get back into bed. I mean it all sounds ridiculous now but...
We sat bolt upright in bed for ages, with all the lights on. And for at least an hour after the event there little taps and knocks across the walls.
And I know, you'll be reasoning it all through with "well it's an old building, it was settling etc. Or someone walked past on the corridor outside."
But we had been sat for hours prior to it happening and hadn't heard a single noise. And that bang was fully in the room. I don't know what it was and yes, there's probably a reasonable explanation but in that moment neither of us had one.
We hadn't previously searched online to see if there had been any other haunting in the building, but Sam did decide in her wisdom to look it up at 1am.. apparently Gladstone has been seen in the library from time to time... but nothing was mentioned about other rooms.
So, who knows maybe we WERE visited by a four time former Prime Minister, maybe we are just 2 very jumpy, imaginative young women or maybe it was something entirely different.
What do you think?
Also, we managed to get to sleep (eventually) by listening to #tomhiddleston reading a Winnie The Pooh sleep story 🤣 so, that was nice.
If you've read this far, thank you! And may all of your hotel rooms not be haunted, or be haunted, whichever you prefer. I just hope it isn't a 1408 situation...
Currently being terrorised by a ghost in our hotel room at Gladstones Library!
