Italian Lady (1840s). Mikhail Scotti (Russian, 1814-1861). Oil on canvas. Komi National Gallery.
The simple genre works from Italy, their content, the curious situations between lovers, the images of naive and dreamy Italians, dressed up in bright costumes, carefree joy of children’s characters - all this attracted Russian viewers. Scotti, an Italian by ancestry, like no artist from the Russian colony, was in a good position to address the demand.
