So it Goes = Harry Styles (Masterpost) Lyric breakdown.
This is just a quick post and theory on why I am overly confident on why So It Goes on Reputation is most likely written about Harry over anyone else. I promised I’d write up this post since I’ve been asked about it a lot.
I’d like to mention, I’m not Taylor, so I’m not stating this as a fact or anything - it’s a theory.
I’d like to start off with the fact that this song is not a positive song, while almost all songs on Reputation that is about Joe are a positive song, besides Taylor mentioning anxiety a few times here and there because of what other’s would think, or not being able the person she’s into, which was another fear. Other than that, there is no “toxic” couple song between her and Joe. So It Goes… Is the only song that connects to 1989, and isn’t a healthy relationship song.
So that being said to dumb it down for you, the song is a hookup song about someone it doesn’t work with, you’re bad for each other - yet you’re unable to stay away from them. (HELLO! Clean! That song showed the not so perfect side of the relationship!)
She brings up a key feeling which is the lyric that she is hostage to her feelings then mentions; “You did a number on me, but honestly, who’s counting?” Which is telling the listener they’ve hurt each other over and over, but they still come back to each other without caring.
She then mentions; “You know I’m not a bad girl.” This seems like a clear link to Style, as in Style, the lyric is; “I got that good girl faith.” Yet she hints at the bad when she’s with him by mentioning the “tight little skirt.” While in So It Goes… She says; “But I’ll do bad things with you.”
Another line Taylor sings is the necklace line. “Wear you like a necklace.” If anyone remembers, in OOTW she sings; “Your necklace hanging from my neck.”
There are a few other connections to 1989 in with this song also, one of them being the lyric.. “All eyes on us” in a few songs in 1989, Taylor sings in multiple songs about how everyone was watching them.
This song can’t be about Calvin as Calvin and Taylor weren’t an on and off again couple.
“So it Goes” also could be a hint dating back to 2014. If anyone remembers the Victoria Secret Fashion show in 2014, Taylor and Harry went to a bar with their friends and both were spotted leaving together, this would fit the lyric; “You make me jealous.” Since Harry was surrounded by all the VSF models. We all know how much the VSF models adore Harry. The funny thing about this is, there was an article that came out during the night of the VSF when Harry and Taylor left together, and the article started with; “All eyes were on them.” If you think about it, it completely clicks with So It Goes… Not to mention she “met him in a bar.” Which is where they were.
Lastly but not least, “So It Goes..” is a lyric in STYLE. The lyrics also start with “So it Goes…” The same way Reputation is, because in STYLE, she is telling you what comes next. Coincidence? I don’t think so. It’s used the exactly the same thing.
“And the pieces fall right into place.” Also links to the lyric from 1989 (All You Had to Do Was Stay) “I’ve been picking up the pieces of the mess you made.” Another song about Harry.
Style is also about an on and off again relationship. Taylor hints in Style that whenever her and Harry are out, it either ends up in paradise, OR burning flames, which shows you the BAD side of the relationship and them hurting each other - Style is also about them coming back over and over again, even when they see other people and hooking up, EVEN when the relationship ended REALLY bad.
So that being said…. So it Goes is literally Style 2.0, but the more darker side, Style was the “perfect” side she wanted you to see, the “paradise” while, So It Goes is the burning flames.
