When did Jim learn to read?

I was rewatching season two and smiled at the detail of Aziraphale labeling a specific mug and container of hot chocolate mix for Jim... and then I thought about it for more than two seconds.

How on Earth does Jim know how to read??

We know that Gabriel put all his memories in the fly container, and he talks about feeling like an empty house. With his empty little brain, how does he know how to read??

For the labels on his hot chocolate supplies, it could be just that he recognizes the gold labeling and recognizes them that way without knowing what the forms of the labeling means.

BUT NO!! He is seen reading fluently and with relative ease when he decides to be incredibly helpful and alphabetize the bookshop!

‘‘It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.’’

Jim is reading big boy words!! (even though he may not know what all of the words mean-) He can read fluently without any comprehension of what he is reading actually means.

And he has some knowledge of the specific letters, but not enough knowledge to know the order they appear in the alphabet?

‘‘What comes after 'k?'’’

Jim knows what the letter 'k' looks like, and he knows how to pronounce it when reading, but he doesn't know where in the alphabet it goes?

I can only think of two explanations for his selective knowledge:

When taking out his memories, Gabriel left the ones about basic life skills in his head. This would include the ability to read. Perhaps he left out knowledge of the alphabet as it would be superfluous since all he would need to be able to do would be reading directional signs to go to Hell? OR

Aziraphale is an INCREDIBLE teacher.

I was scrolling around on Pinterest—(filtering out the nightmarish amount of AI)—and saw a super adorable design for perler bead Aziraphale and Crowley!

I decided to remake them for myself, and then I just didn't want to stop. Using the same bases, I designed perler patterns for my favorite characters from season two! I love how they turned out and thought Tumblr might like to see ^w^

THG cover I whipped up for the printed version of my THG comics which i will be exhibiting next week at Comixandria! If you’re in Alexandria, Egypt from 3-5 July, swing by and say hello :)

I really enjoyed designing this cover :) I know it’s pretty typical to draw Katniss in the woods as the cover for THG but I tried to put my own twist on it. The flat style of the background and coloring is intentional to communicate that the wider narratives of Katniss’ life and her subversive actions are being literally flattened into a storybook narrative for the Capitol. (Also, a nod to her limited perspective as an unreliable narrator.) Meanwhile, in the woods, a supposed all-natural safe haven and private space, Katniss is now being put in the spotlight as a tribute in the Games, symbolizing the invasion of her privacy re: Peeta and her relationship to the woods, and the blurring of her private life and public performance into one. All of which I feel are basically a distillation of what THG, as an installment of the greater franchise, is all about.

Gale to Katniss

After about 6 months of only doing paperback book rebinds, my latest fanbind is Thanks for the Memories by @sazzyfics ! This story is incredibly sweet--an amnesia fic set mostly in the South Downs cottage with a loving (if understandably naive) Aziraphale and a deeply emotional, protective Crowley. The plot is so satisfying and enjoyable. Please check it out if you haven't already!

I had a lot of fun with this design. My inspiration for the typography was the bodice-ripper romance classics of the 80s and 90s (a la Kathleen Woodiwiss, Anne Rice, Rosemary Rogers, etc...) I wasn't able to pin down a specific font from any of those covers, so I just eyeballed it until it looked right. The cover image is by William Quatremaine--it took me forever to find an image that was both public domain and not AI generated (😡) but I did eventually happen on a suitable-ish cottage vibe. And the endpaper has this lovely gold foiling detail that I tried to capture in the fading afternoon light of my front porch.

One of the many things that kills me with Sunrise on the Reaping is that Katniss and Peeta saw that heavily edited version of Haymitch's Games that makes him out to be a "jackass."

Haymitch in SOTR is so incredibly compassionate and caring and selfless--he's not trying to win the Games, he's trying to keep his loved ones alive, he's trying to rebel against the Capitol, he's trying to protect Louella and Lou Lou and Ampert and Maysilee and Wellie. Despite his running internal commentary labelling himself as selfish and wretched throughout the story, it's clear that everyone can detect his gentleness--Effie comments on it, it's why Ampert feels safe with him, it's what draws the District 6 doves to him--I mean, he calls them "my doves," doesn't he?! It breaks my heart that he narrates the story with so much self-hatred, and it's even worse when the story is edited by the Capitol to convey exactly that--

And then Katniss and Peeta, the people who know him best and love him best, see that heavily edited story, designed to paint Haymitch as a jackass, a selfish wretch, and they don't question it for a moment. Even they, who know what it is to be loved by Haymitch, don't question the way the Capitol paints him. Absolutely everyone is blind to the gentleness in Haymitch, most of all Haymitch himself.

But I guess that's the power of propaganda.

so, in Catching Fire when they get to the Victors’ Village for the Victory Tour, Effie tells Katniss’ prep team “You get used to the smell”. that could indicate she has been there enough times to get used to something.

the first time she was there was for Haymitch’s Victory Tour.

12 didn’t get another victor for another twenty four years. so how could she “get used to the smell” if she hasn’t been there in 24 years…

but she was in 12 every Reaping Day.

in my mind the first thing she did when she arrived in 12 was visit Haymitch at his place.

there’s a lot to unpack here

effie is SO fucking pissed that katniss and peeta are laughing at haymitch. she HISSES her reply at them. the woman who is “bright and bubbly” at the reaping and who katniss calls “maniacally upbeat.”

i generally don’t trust katniss’s assessment of other people because she tends to assume the worst. however the idea that effie thinks she can fix haymitch is so funny that i’ll let katniss have this one.

i love how effie doesn’t physically help haymitch in this moment. genuinely it would be so awful and uninteresting if she were mothering him and cleaning up after him all the time. imo effie and haymitch have an interesting dynamic in part because effie cares for him but doesn’t fall into the trope of the walking rehabilitation center. like yes queen sidestep his vomit in your stilhetto heels. #girl

also we fucked up as a society the moment we started telling teens and aspiring artists to conflate being an artist with building a brand as if the two things are inextricable. the name of the game if you want to share your art is to work a job and sell yourself as aesthetizied content. back in my day we could just POST SHIT. to deviantart! what the fuck!

pro-tip if ur a teen or aspiring artist: stay the fuck away from tiktok. tiktok is not the place for your art. your art is not content to be sold. don’t listen to art youtubers advice if they dilute being an artist to stats and algorithms. trying to make a business or career out of art is actually something that takes a lot of experience and consideration to go into it is Not an inherent facet to getting started/expressing yourself as an artist. conflating art = selling something/working a job is the fastest fucking way to ruin it for yourself i am so serious. find communities that share your artistic interests make friends and share your art there. be indulgent and creative and experimental. you deserve a period in your artistic journey that is purely selfish and fostering of your growth. don’t let capitalism take that from you yet

The two best reasons to ship anything are:

1.Incredible deep and detailed narrative themes. The parallels that seem to hit just right, the narrative foils that they can be to each other, the intricate dynamic that's both extremely complex and easily understood. The juxtaposition between something that's harsh and undoubtedly toxic, with the softer undertones, the parts where you read in-between the lines and find a mutual feeling of loneliness from both parts, their intrinsic understanding of each other comes from the mere fact that they're each others mirrored reflections and shadows. In the end both sides will be together forever, and you as an audience can clearly see their tragedy laid out before in a path that blurs pure anguish and tender romance

2.It would be so fucking funny

okay, yes, Haymitch did choose Katniss in that first arena, whether it was because he thought she had a better chance, or because Peeta oozed martyrdom, or because of personal loyalties to Burdock, or all of the above — but as soon as it becomes possible to save both of them, let’s not forget that Haymitch is doing his damndest to save Peeta too; he is getting the money for drugs and food and expensive medicine; he was prioritizing Katniss initially, but the line “he loves Peeta too” isn’t in there for no reason; Haymitch didn’t have to save them both; he could have communicated “cut your losses; he’s too wounded and too much of a liability” to Katniss, (who, again did not need Peeta or the romance to survive at that point in the Games) but no! he wanted to save them both, and he did

going crazy over this scene because:

haymitch wanted a HUG… clearly he feels comfortable being vulnerable with effie to some extent, but in this scene A) he is extremely drunk and B) this is very much the wrong place, wrong time. i wonder if he ever attempts to give effie a hug when he’s sober. i wonder if effie would accept that hug if he wasn’t drunk and/or they weren’t onstage. :(((

what were previous years like? did he often create scenes like this one (i.e., yelling incoherently and passing out)? we know that effie tried to take care of haymitch, at least initially. however, effie does not seem like the kind of person to take being the “laughingstock” of the nation lightly. i’m sure that resentment and affection built up in tandem over the course of 25 years. i would kill to read this moment from effie’s pov.

all that being said: katniss. girl. you do not hold the same job for 25 years if you are eager to leave it for something better. clearly effie is getting something out of this. she just happens to be insane in ways you don’t recognize yet.

anyways. rereading this book after sotr is fun!
