Educate yourself on why you can be turned away.

There are only a few things that you can legally be challenged on.

Not a citizen, felon who hasn't had rights restored, and don't live in the voting precinct are the major ones I would expect.

You CANNOT be challenged as a non-citizen solely based on being an ESL speaker or having an accent and you should immediately call the Voter Protections Hotline if that happens.

If your state does Election Day registration you can't be challenged simply for registering on election day.

If anyone tries to challenge you for something that is not an approved challenge (Look up Poll Watcher rights in your state, this will vary and I don't want to overspeak) call the Voter Protection Hotline, call your county elections office, don't leave without casting a ballot, and insist as much as possible on casting an official ballot. Be calm, be polite, but know your rights and don't back down.

Officials at your polling place should give you a printout or instructions on what you need to do to cure your ballot and the deadline for doing this. DO NOT leave without written directions on exactly what you need to do and where you need to deliver this information by when.

The ONLY thing that can not be cured is voting at the wrong polling place. This may vary by state, but in many you MUST vote at your correct polling place, so double check that before you go, and try to vote early enough that if you do end up at the wrong place you can make it to the correct one before polls close.
