OUGHhh the psychic damage i just took looking at that. but i have been here. for a very long time. rp has always been something i like doing. and as cringe as the old stuff is it is nice to go back and see how i've improved. and see threads with my late friend. probably why i've never deleted it.

she takes the dagger from his hand. this she is more familiar with. she has a few of her own, not that she's very proficient with them. she'd picked them up after kirkwall. alice had been terrified of being discovered as a mage after all that she'd seen there, but was equally terrified of being left defenseless. adrift, without the familiarity of the circle, she'd armed herself.

she hadn't really had a chance to practice very well. or to gain proficiency through experience, either. it turns out that outside of kirkwall, few people will jump at the chance to harm a small teenage girl. she had been met with kindness during her travels, especially from those that had very little to give.

"that sounds fun!" she hands the dagger back to him, handle first, just like he had. she makes a conscious effort to keep her voice enthusiastic, because she is enthusiastic. but people around skyhold will cast odd glances at her when she's helping with menial tasks, when she wants to learn things beyond her ken. she needs them to know that she's being honest.

"i like daggers," she continues, as though she really knows what she's talking about. "staffs are too heavy, i think. i don't know how to balance with them. is there a way to fight up close with magic, up close and fast? that you've seen, i mean."

his fingers grip the dagger, flourishing as he slots it into its sheathe. it wasn't meant to kill people, but anything that can cut flesh can do the job effectively. her familiarity with them, and her following questions, make him curious for a moment.

in his mind, it's easy to imagine anyone with a knife. especially those in the city. he had one since he was a child; first, a kitchen knife wrapped and tucked under the back of his shirts. the second, gifted to him from the Hahren of his alienage. when he joined the clan, officially, they had him make one from wood, then bone.

"if you want to use a staff, you have to work your upper body," he gestures, showing the areas, "as for using one with magic, I don't see why you couldn't." He shrugs, arms crossing as he thinks for a moment. as far as he knows, mages don't need to use a staff. it was just an easier thing to use to focus. but he knew arcane warriors, knew they wielded swords, shields, and bows like any other warrior, and still cast their magic easily.

but, a thought occurs, an idea that makes him grin with excitement. he turns, quickly starting to pace as he begins to explain, "we could - now this is very dangerous but i could probably work with Lady Dagna - infuse a dagger with lyrium, or foci runes that would allow you to channel your magic that way." his hands are expressive, his eyes looking forward. "tevene magi sometimes use swords, so i don't see why we couldn't try. and if it works, we can work on adjustments as you use it." he spins on his heels, his grin still on his face and a slight bounce in his feet, "what do you think?"

"it would help them too," she says, thinking out loud now. "an extra skill they can use after the inquisition isn't needed anymore and they resettle their villages." it's a question that's on her mind frequently, what will happen to the refugees and all after the inquisition is no longer formally supporting them.

but she can stew on that later. and she will, most certainly. for now, though, she just casts her eyes up at faron as he touches her head with some measure of affection. she's certain he doesn't need to hear her rambles on this peaceful morning.

"i'm looking forward to learning. helping, that is. whatever i can do to help." whatever keeps her from being a nuisance. it's part of her anxiety about teaching the recruits and refugees new skills, the fact that she doesn't know where she would go if not for skyhold. circle destroyed, no damn idea where her parents live—or even if they're still alive. no, she needs to be proactive if she's going to secure something to do after this whole mess is wrapped up.

"so long as i can run a few errands before we leave." she runs through her list again in her head, thinks of what must be accomplished before the day is up. "i can't promise i'll be of much help on a hunt." she's wary of her magic, still, and hesitates to even practice its offensive capabilities. plenty of mages have offered, but she can't shake the image of something going wrong. "though, i suppose i'm good at spotting tracks and the like."

there is a moment where his minds lingers on the after. he hasn't spent much time thinking about it, never one to truly think too far ahead. after what he's experienced, how could he? ten years ago he was hoping the blight wouldn't swallow the world. three years ago, he didn't think he'd be fighting templars or helping elves flee from cities. yet here he is. a hole in the sky. the future an uncertainty as it always was.

he can at least teach them the basics. put tools in their hands for whatever the future holds. just like he will Alice.

"i'll show you the ropes," his hand stays on her head, the other flourishes out a small, not well crafted but usable dagger, handle towards her, "we'll go huntin' after ya make yourself one of these. Horseshoes first, then dagger."

a small chuckle leaves him, "that's the point of the hunt. teach you how to do it. get you basics besides magic." he almost scoffs, a shudder running down his spine from a memory lingering on the edges. "mages... especially the ones we're up against tend to think all they need is magic. but if an opponent closes the gap, unless you're a knight or warrior mage, you'll struggle, maybe die," he remarks, voice a bit more distant as he stares out at the horizon, "so, don't worry. i'll make sure you can protect yourself when I'm not around, da'len."

She has hardly swallowed one chunk of candied ginger before she is reaching into her pouch for another, the sharp, sweet bite of home soothing amidst all the uncertainty and strangeness of the human settlements. The discomforting distance most people seemed to manage with her while also never giving her a moment of privacy.

What draws her attention most is the use of her name, and she doesn't notice the way that stings. Is it truly so rare for her to hear her own name these days? It's been a few weeks—they are preparing to head to Redcliffe to try a gambit against the Tevinter Magister holding it hostage—yet it feels like it's been years since she heard her name. Let alone a nickname.

She turns, popping the candied ginger into her mouth, a blink after her name rings out, and only as she's turning does she recognize the voice. "Faron!" she shouts back, nearly dropping her pouch of treats as she fumbles to put it away. He scrambles to meet her, but she equally jolts towards him, throwing her arms around him the moment he's within reach, nearly dislodging the red scarf that hangs around her shoulders and hair.

The grip is tight, tighter than she has ever hugged him before, but as is typical of Dhavihal, that is the only sign that she needs any comfort whatsoever. "What are you doing here?" she asks.

his arms wrap around her tightly, fingers gripping at her back. he wants to hold her here, close, for days if he could. tears sting at his eyes as he leans back to look at her. rough hands cup her face, stroking the vallaslin on her face, eyes desperately taking in her image.

"what am i doing here?" he puts his hands through her hair, pulling her close and letting himself fall back into the snow with her. "if ya remember, i was damn opposed to letting you go in the first place. so, i'm here to bring you home."

at least, that was the plan. his hand still holds her back, gently rubbing between her shoulder blades. but now, he isn't sure. he's heard the word that she's needed. heard the words that the shem speak about her, praising her. heard how she stitched the hole close, for now.

"in whatever way i can, at least. even if it's just bringing a piece of home to you," he smiles, sadly, "i'm glad you're alive, lethallan. i'm so glad you're alive." now he doesn't hold back the tears. now, he lets himself cry with her in his arms. "and ya can't convince me to leave either unless you're comin' home too."

it doesn't escape her notice that faron is blocking the wind, keeping her from the worst of the biting morning chill. not much escapes her notice. a blessing and a curse, really, but one she is happy to put to use in service of the inquisition. it serves her well in matters of choosing friends, too, and it is why she knows faron to be well intentioned.

she tugs her cloak more tightly about herself. a worry sneaks in, that she's somehow annoying the man. she comes up to this place for morning solitude, after all. foolish to think that the same does not apply to him. but she pushes that out of her mind—she knows she would do well to worry less.

"i'm curious about it," she says by way of answer, shrugging. "and it's helpful to know what everyone's doing around skyhold. i counsel the new arrivals, sometimes, and i like to know where i can suggest they put their skills to use."

a stray gust of wind blows her hair into her face and she occupies herself with tucking the copper strands up into a bun. she does wish that the inquisition had settled somewhere a bit warmer, but there's no denying the safety that their base offers here.

"though, i suppose i should ask if you even want anyone sent your way to help out. would hate to be a burden."

if he's honest, the idea of some fool stumbling around in the forge area didn't settle well in his mind. yet, he reminds himself that they all start somewhere. he too was a bumbling fool when he started. and with luck, they wouldn't all be new to crafting.

"It probably wouldn't hurt to have more hands to carry weapons out," he hums, "we'll have ya come down to help out a bit, first. Show ya the ropes." Gently, he places his hand on her head, a natural instinct for him.

in the clan, he was a teacher to the younger clan members. How to sharpen your blades, craft arrows, traps and such. the basics that they would need to survive their first hunt. and for those that would join him in crafting, he would teach them how to skin their prey, how to tan the leather, to twist iron and wood to their needs. and, looking at her, he hopes to do the same.

no circle mage would know the real way to defend themselves. he knew that. they jumped too much at the slamming of doors, and the shouts of joy. she may mask it, but he can see the way she wants to prove herself. to make herself useful.

a sigh leaves him. "lets say, ye come with me to learn the craft. and then we'll go out for a hunt, hm?" he smiles at her, teeth baring in a grin of hope and some delight, "get ya outta this bleeding cold."

you need to be held as though you're going to break. you need someone to trace your scars like cracks in a wall, crumbling. their touch is almost painful; you've been without it for too long, without someone to hold you. but, you cannot bring yourself to pull away.
