Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park
This great valley boasts sandstone masterpieces that tower at heights of 400 to 1,000 feet (120-320 meters), framed by scenic clouds casting shadows that graciously roam the desert floor. The angle of the sun accents these graceful formations, providing scenery that is simply spellbinding.
The landscape overwhelms, not just by its beauty but also by its size. The fragile pinnacles of rock are surrounded by miles of mesas and buttes, shrubs and trees, and windblown sand, all comprising the magnificent colors of the valley. All of this harmoniously combines to make Monument Valley a truly wondrous experience. Enjoy this beautiful land.
Navajo Name: Tse’Bii’Ndzisgaii
Shiprock - New Mexico
Its also called Tsé Bitʼaʼí in Navajo, which means "rock with wings" or simply "winged rock." The formation figures prominently in Navajo Indian mythology as a giant bird that carried the Navajo from the cold northlands to the Four Corners region.
It is the solidified inner tube of a volcano that went extinct long ago. In fact this part of the volcano was quite far underground beneath the volcano before millions of years of erosion has washed the rest of the paletau away to bring it to the surface. In other pictures of shiprock you can see 3 long arms jetting out in the desert from the volcano. These are solidified lava fissures.
