(While I was gone I broke my laptop, but now I have it back!)
I can't believe this man. "I love my husband <3 #fireemblemfates"
The smile on her face widens, BRIGHTENS, and her eyes follow Percy as he rises to full height. He didnât look⌠EXACTLY âright as rainâ, however, he was getting there. Slowly. But heâs doing it on his own, and thatâŚ? THAT was the most important thing.
Dare she say, the pride she had for him made her heart skip a little.
âOh, I donât doubt that⌠But baby steps, my love. Run too hard and fast at once, and youâll trip over your shoelaces.â River pats Percy on the shoulder, leaning up to press a kiss to his temple, âNow how about getting ourselves a nice hunk of that pizza you were texting me about?â
Seeing River smiling proudly at him made Percy feel proud, himself. Something he hadnât felt for a while now. He couldnât help but smirk a little.
âI know, love, I know. But maybe if I get some velcro shoes...â He laughed at his own stupid joke--if it could even be called a joke. It was on par with a seven year-oldâs joke that they heard from a classmate and retold incorrectly.
âAnd pizza sounds good right about now. It still should be hot. I made sure that none of the stuff you donât like is on your side.â He practically ran over it with a fine-toothed comb when he got it. He knew how much River disliked mushrooms on her pizza.
(Iâm finally watching yesterdayâs Gotham and Iâm crying becauseÂ
NORAAAAAAAA!
LUCIUUUUUUS!
VICTOORRRRR!
OSWAAAAAALD!
EDWAAAARD!Â
MY BABIES!)
By the rather-⌠Worn edge to his voice, River had the distinct feeling that a few more than just âaâ singular nap was going to be needed. But even still, SECRETLY River was pleased with the outcome of their interactions. Dagny, even if she proved exhausting in the end, seemed happy with Percy, and THAT was all that mattered to the assassin. The wily little girl even had a message to cart back, which River dutifully delivered upon return.
âMy little ninja princess told me, to tell you, that she hopes you have a good nap; and that if you get scared again, you can always borrow one of her stuffed dinosaurs to protect you.â River crosses her arms, staring at Percyâs back.
ââŚItâs not too late to run away still, you know.â
Percy rubbed his face and chuckled a bit, peeking up at River before standing up. âOh? Thatâs awful nice of her.â He felt drained and haggard--just from all that. Honestly he was having a hard time believing he would be able to hang on much longer without a breakdown. He felt close to one right now but he just kept fighting it.
â...Iâm done runninâ from what scares me. I did that my whole life and Iâm tired of it. Iâm a grown man.â
âA WHILE?! But thatâs-⌠Thatâs a really long time!â How long sheâs not sure, but it doesnât stop her from STARING open-mouthed, âIf you wait too long, youâll both be old people and then the clothesâll look funny on you! Is it âcuz you donât know how to âporpoiseâ?â
With the way she was going, odds are the inquisitive child would have BOMBARDED the Scotsman with an endless barrage of marital questions. Were it not for the timely intervention of two strong hands to scoop her up.
âHâOOOKAY. COME HERE YOU LITTLE GREMLIN, I THINK ITâS TIME FOR UNCLE-DAD PERCY TO TAKE HIS NAP, HE LOOKS TIRED.â Riverâs voice intentionally âdrownsâ any questions, and she ignores her spawnâs PETULANT frown and reluctance to be carried away as she looks over her shoulder, ââŚYou going to be alright here, dear?â
With that Percy was fighting the urge to make a whiny scream in his throat, putting on a strained smile and stiffened up. Thank goodness River was there to save him--and drown out all those questions. He exhaled slowly, able to start calming himself.
âY-yeah, Iâll be fine. Jusâ....jusâ need a nap.â
Contrary to her usual bluster, River doesnât make a single sound during their exchange⌠Not because she canât, heavens already knew she was privvy to what her lover was trying to condense for her daughter; but because it wasnât her place to do it. Percy was the sole owner of the right to say as much or as little as HE felt comfortable telling⌠And River felt he was doing fantastically.Â
Grey eyes watch as River goes over, watch as she runs a hand through his hair. Dagny didnât know WHY she did it, but he always seemed to get all âgooeyâ when she did⌠But now Dagny look somewhat confused when she looks back at Percy. He was scared of kids? WhyâŚ? He a big, and SHE didnât think she was scary at all, honestly!
âWell, I-I guess I understand⌠I mean have you seen what those kids DO at the park? They eat mud and pick their noses and stuff, YUCK!â Dagny leans in to whisper, ââŚI donât pick my nose at all, I think itâs gross.â
âBut YEAH, UNCLE-DADâŚ! I mean youâre not my REAL dad, âcuz you wouldâve been with us in the car and stuff when I was LITTLER, but when you marry my mom, you will be!â
And turn gooey he did. Percy was a sucker for having his hair played with. He practically looked like a cat that found a floor heater to lay down on. He snapped back to himself when Dagny spoke again, managing to keep himself composed.
âOh, those br--er, kids...absolutely gross.â He leaned in a bit to hear her whisper, regretting it when she raised her voice to answer his inquiry about his unique new title. And he couldnât help but scream a little on the inside when Dagny spoke of him and River one day getting married.
âWell, I guess Iâll be Uncle-Dad for a while then.â That was all he could manage on the issue. Marriage was a...scary thought to Percy. Let alone fatherhood. It brought up so many anxieties within him that just made his skin crawl.
âAhhh-... Well, in my honest and very medical professional-y opinion, Iâd rather you didnât. Has a high chance of âcatchingâ onto the other limbs anyway, itâs likely a terminal case.â Though she jests, underneath that playfulness River still gives Percy a âlookâ. Words couldnât describe how proud she was of him for getting THIS far, but she knew there was still a ways for him to go⌠Baby steps, after all.
Dagny, however, is not only observant, but also plagued by child-like curiosity. Thereâs a pout on her face as she removes herself from Percyâs leg.
ââŚYou donât like me, Uncle-Dad Percy?â
âOh...well I suppose Iâll just have to live with this condition for the rest of my days.â He sighed in defeat, but when he felt her release his leg he grew concerned. Her question concerned him even moreso.
âUh...thatâs uh...thatâs kinda hard to answer, Dagny.â He fidgeted and opted to kneel down in front of her. âI have...a hard time gettinâ to know kids. I never really learned how because I was...scared when I was your age.â He chewed the inside of his cheek, picking his words carefully so she could understand.Â
âI do like you. I just need to work on not beinâ...scared.â He paused for a moment and looked confused. âUncle-Dad?â

â...Am I going to have to amputate my leg?â He was...half-joking. Percy was doing his best not to freak out about this entire thing. During the time heâs been staying with River heâs managed to quell his fear of being around children for the most part. But there was still something that bothered him. Just...the lingering memory of his childhood kept him a bit on edge.
(So I bought a Funko Pop of Arkham Knight Scarecrow and the Black and White edition figurine of Scarecrow. Goodbye money.)

âKiss-kiss, Princess. Happy Valentineâs Day, darlingâŚ!â
âKisses to you, too.â
(Gonna see Deadpool with my mom tonight. Thereâs some sort of early showing tonight at 7 from what I understand.)
âYouâre kinda weird.â Stuck in what appeared to be a âendlessâ mind-buffer, Percy might not have had anything to say in that moment, but the pint-sized âsurpriseâ was far from being tongue-tied. The Scotsmanâs shaky voice managed to pull Dagnyâs attention, even after hearing the muffled curse of her mom, and a THUMP as her failing search must have caused a box avalanche. Was this guy⌠Afraid of her?
âWhy do yâlook like you sniffed stinky milk, are you sick or somethinâ?â STARING a him with a beady squint and hands firmly placed on her hips, the bombarding questions continued to fly, ââŚSooo, you and my mom kiss and stuff right? Like in the Disney movies? Does that mean youâre gonna be my DAD nowâŚ?â
He clenched his jaw, stunned. Percy was...not good with children. They more or less scared him. And all of these questions were starting to make him feel sick. He needed to get air. Now.
âR-River, Iâll...Iâll be a moment.â Rushing to the nearest open space he gasped for breath, having to force himself to slow down to keep himself from hyperventilating. This was going to be too much if she kept asking questions. He wasnât sure if heâd be able to stay level around her.Â
He paced. And paced. And paced. âCalm down, Percy, calm down. This isnât like your childhood, this isnât going to go to shit. You wonât hurt her, you wonât hurt either of them. You...you wonât leave them...â He kept muttering this to himself, rubbing his face anxiously. This was going to be a challenge.
âHonestly, how does anyone expect to get any work done when somebody is always stickinâ their nose where it doesnât belong.â
âCome out, Dagny, pleaseâŚ?â Where Percyâs voice was stone, RIVERâS was a calm softness with a tinge of concern, her brow furrowing as a look in the closet revealed a severe lack of child. Nothing⌠She knew her daughter wasnât fully pleased knowing Percy was to be a âconstantâ presence, but she still seemed curious about him all the same. However, there werenât many places for the impish little girl to hide, and with each failed check, anxiety had begun its own steady rise within River as well.
Said âimpâ was feeling stress of her own, for Percyâs steely tone made her small form cringe⌠Just as much as her âstealth failâ did. But assassins showed no fear, even when caught; and so with a glowering frown that she hoped was âintimidatingâ, Dagny shuffled out from behind the crate. Head bowed, and hands behind her back defiantly.
Her face was âhardâ as she looked at Percy, but her eyes nervously glance off to where her mother went.
Percy wouldâve probably fainted had he and River met prior to his accident, he really only stumbled back a bit despite his accurate guess preparing him for such a thing. That hadnât exactly made the shock any less...well, shocking. He looked less stone-faced and more nervous, having difficulty looking at Dagny. Glancing away, he cleared his throat a little, trying to collect himself. He was about as threatening as a potato right now.
âWell...I canât say I wasnât expecting this.â Percy just let the words come out, but hastily explained his wording. âThat is to say, with how everything was set up I kinda took a guess. N-Not that this is a bad thing.â He felt a mess, like he had nothing right to say. Lord, this was embarrassing.
âThank-you, dear, it⌠W-Well, it shouldnât take long to find, so Iâll be back quick. Just sit tight, yes?â An act much easier said than done, but alas, River lacked mind -reading capabilities. Perhaps she SAW a bit of that discomfort⌠A brief clench of the jaw or a twitch in his hands, she was close enough to him that she could recognize some of these signs. But, maybe so as not to cause more stress, River said nothing as she left him for what was once the buildingâs managerâs office. Sheâd given Percy reign of the warehouseâs second floor; but it WAS this floor that gave access to the suspended, box-like structure.
âŚIf only Riverâs target still REMAINED where she had âstoredâ her. Lurking behind one of Percyâs empty crates, a pair of wide, suspicious grey eyes were locked onto the Scotsman; for Dagny had hoped to catch a sneaky look at her momâs âfriendâ all by herself⌠Like a REAL assassin. Then again, she didnât account for her bodyâs weight to make the crate shift across the dingy floor with a large, echoing scrape.
When River actually left him alone it had already felt like hours passed by in a single second. Thatâs how agonizing it felt to wait for her, to wait for the answer to a question he already knew. His heart was thumping loudly within his chest, like an orchestra with far too many drums in it. And the sound of the scrape of the crate caused dissonance within those drums.
He felt eyes on him and his paranoia was going off the charts by now. His throat dry, Percy swallowed painfully. What on Earth was that? Had he been followed? His mind was racing, he felt his stomach churning his face paled everything in his head was jumbled together sentences running together nothing made sense what made that noise why was he so frightened--
âPlease just do us both a favor and come out.â Percy had a hard time believing that was actually him speaking. He felt so much anxiety and yet his words were as solid as a slab of stone.
