'The Scissor Birds'. Jenny Barron.
i got these knockoff boots online and instead of the brand name on the tag they have the name of an apparently nonexistent martin scorsese movie??? what the fuck
THE ORIGINAL? ON MY DASH
this post led to a series of events that had martin scorsese himself reacting to his alleged movie goncharov and it has less than 400k notes almost 3 years later?
she's platonic about it but in my opinion, stratt 100% treats grace as her dead wife. she keeps a tacky fox trinket in her coat pocket. there's a framed photo of him in her study . he's grinning goofily in it (bc he's a dork). new guy like: is that her husband? / no, dumbass, it's dr. ryland grace, 1/3 of the hail mary mission. / oh, fuck. were they... ? / yeah, it's unclear. black-and-white montages of grace messing around in high-level meetings play every time stratt contemplates committing more environmental crimes. she looks up at the night sky and vaguely wonders if he's enjoying his space ramen. that's her dead wife. she killed him.
[Project Hail Mary spoilers]
Eva Stratt who insisted on being the first to be tested for the comatose gene
Eva Stratt who made sure the ship computer knew the crew's exact coffee orders, even Grace, down to the most precise measurements
Eva Stratt who illegally acquired thousands of video games for the hail mary crew, despite the fact they'd be in a coma for the majority of the trip
Eva Stratt who sent a school teacher into space because she knew he was a fundamentally good man
Eva Stratt who would betray the closest thing she had to a friend because she knew there was no other choice
Eva Stratt who would do anything to save the Earth, no matter the cost
Eva Stratt who desperately wished she could be the one to make the sacrifice instead
Eva Stratt who couldn't, no matter how much she wanted to
Eva Stratt who studied history, and had seen the way the world would become
Eva Stratt who was terrified by it
Eva Stratt who knew she would would go without credit
Eva Stratt who knew no statues would be built of her
Eva Stratt who knew she would never be a hero
Eva Stratt who did it all anyway
Eva Stratt who had to
don't make this harder, please
Apparently Eva Stratt at the end of the movie on the ship had a prison tattoo on her neck that meant something along the lines of "life without parole." So, parallel to Grace and Rocky's adventure, there was a whole subplot where Eva Stratt
- Was eventually trialed by governments of the world as a scapegoat and sent to prison
- She somehow BROKE out of said prison and currently commandeers a rogue paramilitary faction of Project Hail Mary loyalists who believe in her over world governments, who presumably are still hunting her down
- She currently is on the run and staying mobile on an ice breaker ship like some kind of james bond villain base (but you know, good) while STILL working on project hail mary the whole time
- Her rogue loyalist faction controlled enough resources they could go to space and collect the beetles Grace had sent. Alternatively, it was the world government that collected the beetles, and Stratt had a whole ass heist movie to steal them, which is why she had the little xenonite figure at the end of the movie. Either ways she was running circles around them.
Absolutely insane. Never piss off a history major
In retrospect, it's hilarious that Stratt made everybody on the vat speak English in deference to Grace being monolingual
Because with how quickly Grace was able to pick up Eridian, even with literally NOTHING about it being familiar the way a human language would be, they probably could have chosen Mandarin as the universal language on Stratt's Vat and he would have just. Learned it.
realizing a headcanon of yours happens to make an element of canon even more heartbreaking when you hadn't even considered it from that angle previously
[ID from alt: emoji rubbing their hands together and grinning evilly. End ID.]
When I first read PHM I couldn't help but feel like Grace's memory/opinion of Stratt was incredibly biased. Not just from the standard First Person sense (side note, you always always have to remember that first person is biased), but from a deeply personal place. She always came off as cold, but when he's talking with the other project members, they thought he was sleeping with her.
Something was there. A softness he refused to return to. That he couldn't see. She couldn't possibly be so cut throat towards him while everyone else thought they were an item.
So I never believed Grace's retellings of the cold, calculating, cruel Stratt. Not fully.
She did her job and she did it with incredible efficiency. But she had to. She very clearly talked about how much she really didn't want to do what she did. She actually entertained the possibility of calling in the alternative before realizing that nine days was a total pipedream.
That's what I tell people time and time again. They didn't change Stratt for the movie. (In my opinion.)
That's the more honest version of herself. Without Grace's internal bias clouding our judgement.
And then you look back at the book and it just hurts all the more. To think that she betrayed him so badly in his eyes, that he can't even remember what she likely was in reality.
Efficient, responsible, and above all, human Eva Stratt. The world's whipping boy.
Yes, she did many things that people see as monstrous. But she's a very smart woman. If she didn't send Grace, there was a significantly higher chance that the mission would fail. You have the foremost expert, you send him.
He makes threats to scuttle the mission, you know he's fundamentally a good person but you can't rely on that. So you ensure temporary memory loss. (Sidenote, I don't believe Yao's gun ever got on the ship. The second that Grace threatened the mission, she would have found a believable excuse for it to be removed.)
You are tasked with saving the world at all cost...but you're still human under it all.
We will probably never know the true Stratt. And I think even she would rather be remembered as the villain. Because she likely thinks of herself just like Grace does.
And she knows this is the case. Hearing her tell Grace that she believes him is so much more heartbreaking when you consider how much she knows this. How much she wants him to just hate her.
Better her than Earth.
Anyway, I'm very passionate about Stratt, could you tell?
I really tried to tip the scales in your favor
Wishing everyone a very Happy Earth Day with Stratt, who always put Earth first! 🌏🌱
Not lovers or friends but a secret third thing (they play Catan together and Stratt pretends she's not preparing Grace for a one way trip to space)
EHEHEHEHEHEHE
What if Erid invented intergalactic fast travel
I don't support Eva bashing that's emotional support environmental terrorist right there. What I'm interested in is the bad pr she is giving earth because the eridian ambassador is too invested in his flesh teddy bears life

Sacrifice for human kind
headcanon that Grace grades the other scientists work only if he’s focusing on something else or he’s tired.
Like. Imagine one of the scientists studying Astrophage gives Grace a paper detailing their recent findings and Grace being locked in on something else, he just looks up, skims the paper, then pulls out a red pen from somewhere and marks it, “B+, you forgot to account for…” then after a 5 minute lecture on how to improve, he goes back to typing or smth. The scientist just standing there baffled thinking ‘B+? What are we in? A classroom?”, and kind of bum hurt that they only got a B+ (bc ofc they want an A) so they go back to researching with a new ferocity cuz dammit they’re going to get that A. Cue the science team being fueled by Dr.Grace’s grades, them just rubbing it into each others faces if they get A’s or A+’s. Headcanon 2 is that he just keeps gold star stickers in his pockets so for example: All of them are in a meeting, Dr. smth pipes up with a good suggestion and he goes, “Great job! You get a gold star.” And just puts it on their phone case or badge and moves on, everyone is flabbergasted and a bit jealous except for the scientist who is just vibrating with happiness and a bit of fear because the co-dictator of the world just gave them a gold star.
Extra: Grace also hits Stratt with the 1 2 punch of “A+! Here’s a gold star.” On one of her presentations after staying up for 36+ hours and slaps a gold star on her forehead before conking out on the desk. Carl is in the corner desperately trying not to laugh bc Grace just did this in front of the entire Petrova task force while Stratt is just staring at him in confused amusement. Extra-extra: The mess hall on Stratt’s Vat has a ‘Fridge-board” which is a magnetic board acting as a fridge for all of their papers with A’s on it. Grace just being mortified when he learns that he’s been grading and giving gold stars to the top minds of the world and Stratt having to assure him that is boosts morale and that it’s fine.
(Once he gets sent off to space, everyone in the task force keeps their stars to remember him, because he never said goodbye.)
(Eva looking at her star and throwing it away, because she couldn’t stand the thought of having a gold star from the man she killed.)
