Are you a creature of habit? So is Swinhoeās Pheasant (Lophura swinhoii). This bird, which lives in Taiwan, often treks the same feeding routes along the forest floor to find snacks like acorns, berries, worms, and termites. To tell the difference between males and females, check their coloring: Males have a mix of blue, white, and green plumage, as well as long tail feathers, while females are mostly brown. During courtship rituals, males display bright red wattles, flutter their wings, and dance in the hope of attracting mates.Ā

Feast your eyes on one dazzling bird: the Golden Pheasant (Chrysolophus pictus)! Males of the species have an eye-popping array of plumage that includes a golden-yellow crest, a bright red belly, and patches of green and blue throughout their bodies. Although it's capable of short trips through the air, this bird isnāt a strong flier and tends to stay grounded. It can be found in the mountainous forests of western China, where it spends most of its time in the shaded forest floor, which helps protect its vibrant colors from fading in the sunlight.

Have you ever seen one of these critters at the beach? Also known as āsand crabsā or āsand fleas,ā Pacific mole crabs (Emerita analoga) can be found across the western coasts of North and South America. East Coast residents might encounter their relatives, the Atlantic sand crabs (Emerita talpoida), during summertime beach trips. Mole crabs migrate with the tides, keeping up with breaking waves to filter feed on plankton brought in by the crashing waters. These critters use their back legs to get around, and they burrow backwards, too.
