Mahogany Sunset (Chapter 3, Page 6)
Zephyn walked back inside the ship, running his hand through his hair. First, he looked into Surayaâs room. It was darkened, and all he could see of the vulnerable girl was a lump on the bed.
âHey. You awake.â The form shifted, and spoke.
âYeah. Iâm hungry. Have we landed?â
âYep. âBout five minutes ago now. Can I turn the lights on?â The response was muffled and sarcastic.
âYeah, sure. Make a whole bunch of difference for me, wonât it.â Zephyn frowned, but pressed the button that lit the room up. Suraya had messed up all the blankets, and she was lying curled up, her eyes tightly closed. Zephyn decided to speak.
âDo you want some food? Water? There wonât be much, weâre running out.â
âYes please.â This time she wasnât sarcastic, just tired.
âAlright. Just a minute.â Zephyn sprinted out along the hallway until he reached the cooking room. There he frantically got two pieces of manna, almost half of the total remaining amount of food. Gulping at the lack of supplies he sprinted back to Surayaâs room, slowing at the door and entering quietly. She was now sitting at the edge of her bed, against the wall. Â
âSuraya? Hereâs the food.â She continued to stare straight ahead. Then she spoke:
âZephyn? I... need to go to the toilet.â Â
âAlright, just across the... oh. Hang on, I'll take you.â Zephyn walked over to Suraya, placing the manna on the bedside table, and grabbed her shoulder. Â
âStand up.â She stood up, and he steered her out of her room, and across the large hallway. He opened the door to the shower and toilet room, and sat her down on top of the seat. Â
âCall me when youâre done aight?â She nodded, so he walked out, and stood outside the door awkwardly. Suddenly his headset buzzed. He turned it on, and spoke into it.
âYâokay Tira?â There was muffled talking in the background.
âPrep the ship. We need to run. Very soon.â Zephyn took a deep breath, then yelled into the toilet,
âWait up, âRaya! I gotta run!â The only response he got was a grunt, but he was too far away to hear it. The engines were fuelled but off, and knowing the kind of trouble that they usually got in, the q-drive would need warming up as well. He jumped into the cockpit and powered on the engines. He opened the passenger door in anticipation, and started turning the q-drive. After that he turned all the outside cameras on, so he could see if there was any trouble. Zephyn knew that in a pinch he could pilot the Rattlesnake, but not competently enough to defend against attackers. Tiraâs voice exploded through the headset.
âIâm incoming, now! Begin lift-off sequence!â Zephyn quickly pressed the right button, and the ship began hovering just above the landing platform. The cameras showed Tira running from the main entry to the rest of the station. She looked up to the cockpit window, smiling in relief to see Zephynâs face, ready to run. It was the last thing she saw, until the shot knocked her to the floor.
