1990s Trip Hop Playlist [Spotify & YouTube]
Check out the YouTube version of this playlist here, which contains a whole lot more ‘bonus’ tracks that aren’t on Spotify.
And check out the YouTube Music version of it here too.
Here’s some pretty good news: I added a bunch of underheard bangers to this 90s trip hop playlist this week, and now I’m not really sure which ones to write about, because there’s too many of them to choose from that are *so* ridiculously good. But I gotta pick a few, so I’m getting out my dartboard, and, here we go…: He’s definitely not as well known as the iconic duo of Kruder & Dorfmeister, to whom he was once something of a protégé, but if you’ve never heard of a guy from Vienna who goes by the name of Stereotyp, then you’ve really been missing out. More than a quarter-century ago, Stereotyp made his debut on K&D’s own G-Stone Recordings label with a 12-inch called Stash It, and the first song on that record was a brilliantly layered and hazy industrial-dub introduction called “Slo Jo,” which was dark, sharp, cold, and psychedelic, and also came with chanteuse vocals on it from someone named Le Bubu. Rhythmically unorthodox and a very cool blend of heavy and tender that just seems to work extremely well; something deep to get super lost and fully engrossed in. “Slo Jo” was missing from Spotify for way too long, until the service added most of Paris native Kid Loco’s fantastic DJ-Kicks mix from ‘99 to its library, which is a must-listen release if you like those types of stoned-to-the-point-of-seeing-stars kind of trip hop trips. KL had an ear for that type of vibe especially, and he weaved it together on that CD wonderfully. Doesn’t seem like too many people are aware that the mix is on Spotify, though, because “Slo Jo” only has a little over 1.6K plays as of this writing…
Emperors New Clothes - “Dark Light (Underdog Mix)” Rollercone - “Rester Eveille (Riviera Traxx Dub)” De-Phazz - “Cut the Jazz” Tongue - “Culture Consumers” Stereotyp - “Slo Jo”

Summit - "Aeriel Desert" East Westercism 1997 Downtempo / Asian Underground
Tremendous piece of hazy, engrossing, psychedelically dubby, eastern downtempo from mid-to-late 90s UK trio Summit, who floated this one as an exclusive for boutique label Law & Auder's East Westercism comp in 1997, a release whose goal was to serve up a collection of cutting-edge tunes that pitted eastern sounds within western electronic music frameworks. A lot of times, Law & Auder's own conceptual comps have been too avantgarde and experimental for my own tastes, but this tune's such a mass pleaser that far more people should be aware of. Its eastern strings resonate so profoundly on its chorus, and while in a just world, it would have millions of streams online for being such an unmitigated Asian Underground classic, you can't even find it on YouTube. Such a shame, but at least now *you* know about it, right?
love when an artist releases an album so good that it makes you wanna relisten to their entire discography in order
