it's actually so tragic that my beloved taissa turner got an incredible setup, with consistent theming around seeing and being seen and how this relates to her experience as a highly ambitious black lesbian. in her first appearance (aside from being literally seen on television by another character) she and her family are posing for a photoshoot for a political puff piece, in their home. and it chafes. her wife is stressed, her son is young and over it. the photographer cheerily says "you're the queer kamala!" which tells us the narrow parameters within which she's being seen.
as a teen her relationship with van is initially secret even in the wilderness—even without parents and the law and the outside world, the potential judgment of the others is still a threat. the preoccupation with seeing and being seen is echoed in her apparent visions of "the man with no eyes," and her childhood memories of her grandmother's death.
and then, even putting aside other issues with her storyline...we never get to pursue this. I'm not going to detail all the ways this gets dropped, it's sufficient to say that her character was increasingly sidelined in the ensuing seasons and the most compelling themes were dropped.
