Majestic Mess Designs makes queercore button pins and various odds and ends to celebrate the politics of the personal (including pronouns). The pins are a combination of printed digital art, and unique hand-assembled collages.

I call this the Queer Improv series of button pins and I’m always thinking about ways to build on it. Been making the fonts more distinct and interesting over time. Demisexual “no but,” nonbinary “no but”, nonbinary “yes and,” and polysexual “yes and” are on the short list.

The 3 loftiest kinds of praise I’ve gotten for my button pins:

3. Elder butch lesbian who’s the spitting image of Olympia Dukakis’ character Stella in Cloudburst (2011) saying she was a big pin collector in the ‘70s through ‘90s, is glad to see the medium is still alive, & really likes my art.

2. Person buying a pre-made or custom pin for a special nonbinary person in their lives because they’re so glad to have a way to make them seem.

Examples:

Custom “Happy Parents Day” at the Mother’s Day Market for a guy to bring his spouse. Because why f do we have to gender all these things anyway?

Custom they/it pronoun pin for a dear friend who doesn’t get to explore its full set of pronouns often.

What I love most is these interactions happening at a standard weekly community farmers and crafts market. I love queer-specific events and make many wonderful connections there, but those are also by definition insular spaces people are seeking out. It shows the full civic community is actively welcoming when queer venders are as common as the mushroom venders, and they be stumbled into on a neighborhood walk.

Majestic Mess Rummage Suitcase

The pin display suitcase with a few samples and even more pins to rummage through. What treasures will you find?

Many of the pins are printouts of my digital art, but recently I've been working on some hand assembled one-off collage pins using origami paper, embossed labels, dried flowers, cut printouts, cut images, stickers, and even original art. No two weeks are quite the same.
