Painting in my small sketchbook

One of the Hungarian traditions that I like the most is the Busojárás. I didn't know it existed until I came to live here and now I wait for it every year, so of course, I had to paint it in my sketchbook.

One of the folks tale says that the Busos walk around the towns to scare winter away and welcome the spring, which to me is completely beautiful.

I went to see the parade in the city next to mine and it was so fun, lots of people, families, everyone. I really enjoyed it and I made a short video of the experience along with the process of the painting, you can check it out here.

I'm learning a lot about Hungary's history and traditions so I think I'll be painting more of them. Do you have special traditions to welcome spring where you live? let me know, I'm interested in learning more about other cultures.

Watercolor: Year of the Fire Horse

I've always loved the mysticism of the zodiacs, I find them enticing and motivational. Being born in a Year of the Horse makes me excited about this new lunar year, so I had to do my own rendition of the concept!

I admit I didn't have much time to paint something related to it and horses are actually very challenging to draw or paint, plus I knew my sketchbook it's too small to paint a horse the way I would like it, so instead, I decided to paint a horseshoe to symbolize the horse.

The background was the most fun part to paint, it's literally just let the watercolors dance and do whatever they want. I love doing layers and gradients that way, it's very therapeutic.

I'm really happy with this small painting, I like doing simple and conceptual paintings, it's a nice change from the other detailed paintings I do. I have a short video of the process of this painting if you'd like to see it.

I hope this Fire Horse gives me the strength, fuel and determination I need because I have many ideas and projects I want to accomplish, so I'm keeping this painting close to me. Do you also like zodiacs and their messages? Have you seen what this lunar new year holds for you?

Last winter I painted two watercolors that I'm still proud of so I wanted to share them together. I painted the cabin on the left from my imagination, and the house on the right is actually one of my neighbors' house. They're size A4 which is bigger of what I usually paint but that is something I'm working to improve. I want to paint bigger paintings.

Should I make prints from them?

House in Winter

Winter is almost over in my corner of the world, so this painting is my farewell to this beautiful season, at least, until we meet again.

We had a few snowy days in January that covered everything. It was a beautiful sight everywhere you looked. So, one day close to sunset, I was bicycling around and saw this house covered in snow, with a tall tree next to it. The sunset gave the snow a lavender tint which looked so pretty, so I had to take a photo to paint later. My previous winter painting had all white snow so the opportunity to experiment with colorful snow was exciting. I am beyond happy with the final result.

I not often have the opportunity to use my lavender pigment so I was thrilled to work with it again. I also used one of the new pigments in my watercolor palette: Jaune Briliant Dark, which was really convenient for this painting, I'm happy I added it to my palette.

To be honest I prepared myself to feel it more difficult, and maybe that helped me because I started to paint the first layer when all of a sudden I was almost over with it. I think I might be improving more than I think.

I think I had never done a winter painting before, probably because I never fully experienced it before, so I'm really happy with this and my previous winter painting, but I'm also happy that spring is upon us because I'm so ready for more colorful and warmer paintings.

Winter Cabin with a Limited Watercolor Palette

I'm getting to know my custom watercolor palette and to do that I thought that I would use limited palettes to really explore each pigment and not overwhelm myself with so many possibilities.

The pigment that I was most excited to try out was Indanthrene Blue and it did not disappoint me. It's a very beautiful blue, a very versatile pigment and useful for snowy views. I loved the palette I put up, I think it works well for a winter landscape.

I also thought that a winter landscape is the perfect opportunity to experiment with a limited palette. So I imagined a cozy winter cabin in the middle of a forest. While I was painting it I visualized myself in the cabin, having an cozy art studio in the attic and I'd be painting with a winter view from my window.

I really enjoyed the process and the scenario that this painting inspired me. I'd like to know if it inspires you something too? What would you have and do in the cabin? I'd love to know.

Working on a winter painting before the season ends, wish me luck!

A sparkling snowflake

I love winter and I love snow, but after a few months of endless cold; it gets hard to continue to see its beauty, so maybe a sparkling snowflake will do the trick.

It's been 10 years since Hungary had a winter this cold and with this much snow. Of course people were thrilled and happy about it, specially kids, and so was I because I hadn't seen my city like this in the last 4 years I've been living here. However for someone like me who comes from a tropical country, winter is a challenge. At first is fun and interesting and I enjoy it greatly but after three months of very low temperatures, dark days and walking around with infinite amount of layers of clothes on, I get a little tire of it and find it hard to see the beauty I saw at the beginning of the season.

I have found that keeping a positive mind is essential to get through winter, at least for me, so I knew I needed to paint something to help me appreciate winter again. My favorite thing about winter is snow, but it's tricky to paint, so I thought I should explore the basic representation of snow: a snowflake.

I went ahead and painted the snowflake but I felt it needed something more, so I added shimmering watercolors to make it spark, just like fresh snow does! I really love the result and it did make me appreciate the beauty of winter again, snow has something magical in my opinion and I feel blessed to be able to experience it.

My watercolor palette for 2026

I started curating my custom watercolor palette with professional pigments a couple of years ago. I used a student set for many years and it really helped learn about color theory and mixing colors.

After many years using that set and being close to finish all the pans, I decided to curate my own palette according to the subjects I like to paint (mainly urban and natural landscapes) and the style I've developed through the years.

I also wanted to switch to professional pigments just for my own personal choice not because it's necessary. This of course means a larger investment, so my approach was to curate a palette of 12-20 pigments that allowed me to mix any other color that I would need.

So, I investigated a lot and watch too many pigments reviews and finally put this palette together:

I got a couple of these pigments out of curiosity like "Lavender", or because I used them for something specific like "Gold" to paint my Inktober collection.

I left a blank space for a blue pigment to have more options to mix greens, but I'm still not sure which one, maybe a Cerulean or Prussian, so if you have any suggestions please let me know.
