DUPE there it is!

As makeup trends and beauty influencers take over the internet, makeup brands are drastically increasing prices in order to take advantage of the growing market. Although the growing market is great for the makeup industry, it is a serious devastation for the consumer’s bank account. Luxury brands such as Natasha Denona, Chanel, Tom Ford, and Nars are selling eyeshadow palettes for eighty or more dollars and small items, such as lipstick, for close to forty dollars. Due to the power of social media and beauty influencers, consumers are still willing to buy these obscenely priced products because the ads they see online create an illusion that it is the best makeup they will ever buy.

           Let me let you in on a little secret. Over half of the luxury brands are close to, if not the same, quality as a majority of the makeup you can find in the drugstore. Maybelline, L’oreal, NYX, and Physicians Formula, have all improved the quality of their products over the years to the point that when compared to a luxury look alike, consumers can barely tell a difference. Now, this does not mean that all drugstore products are considered “dupes”. Today, I am going to share the best dupes that I have found, along with dupes I have learned about through several beauty influencer videos and blogs. So, if you want to save money, while keeping your makeup looking fresh and expensive, then you will want to keep reading.

1.     Tarte Shape Tape Vs. Makeup Revolution Conceal & Define

I am starting off with the dupe that is the most difficult to believe. Ever since the product’s exclusive release at Ulta Beauty, Tarte Shape Tape has been said to be America’s best concealer by beauty influencers and makeup critics across the nation. The only problem with the concealer, is the price tag. For a tube of shape tape, you will have to pay twenty-seven dollars. For twenty-seven dollars you could buy twenty-seven sodas at McDonalds, twenty-seven lipsticks from E.L.F. or two hundred and seventy meals for the No Kid Hungry campaign. After considering all the worthwhile things twenty-seven dollars can buy, is America’s best concealer really worth the price? In my opinion, not really. This is why, after experiencing how great shape tape performs, I was on a mission to find something that performs just as well; at a much lower price point. Finally, after hours of watching dupe tutorials on YouTube, I discovered the Makeup Revolution Conceal & Define. This concealer has a similar, large doe foot applicator that shape tape does with a highly similar thick, full coverage formula. After hearing about the product, I could not wait to try it, and it held true to the claims. I put shape tape on one eye, and conceal & define on another and after a full day of errands I could not tell the difference. So, if you are in the mood for a product with the quality of a luxury brand and the price of a product at the drugstore, I highly suggest you give my favorite dupe a try!

2.     Two Faced Better Than Sex Mascara Vs. L’oreal Lash Paradise

This claimed dupe surfaced almost immediately following the release of lash paradise. It all started with the similar packaging, which you can see in the pictures below. Within weeks, the sales of the L’oreal mascara skyrocketed and lash paradise became one of the best-selling mascaras at the drugstore. Both mascaras have “flake free” formulas that provide intense volume while also increasing the length of your lashes. Better than sex mascara is only available in two formulas, black and waterproof. Lash Paradise is available in multiple shades ranging from brown to blackest black, and it is also available in a waterproof formula. I have never tried these two products personally, but almost every review that I have read, comparing the two, has claimed that they actually prefer the wear of lash paradise over better than sex. So, if you need a trustworthy mascara that performs similar, if not better, to its luxury twin, then lash paradise is the product for you!

3.     NARS Orgasm Blush Vs. Milani Dolce Pink Baked Blush

NARS Orgasm blush has been a cult favorite since its debut in 1999. The popular beauty brand is well known for their high performance products, but they are also notorious for an unnecessarily high price tag. Orgasm is the perfect, natural pink shade that compliments almost any completion without fading or unevenly applying on the skin. The only downside is that it will cost you thirty-eight dollars for a small compact of the infamous blush. Thanks to the drugstore find by GlamLifeGuru, Tati Westbrook, you do not have to spend the serious cash in order to get the same blushing look you would get from the orgasm blush. In one of her many drugstore dupe videos, Tati raves about the comparison of the Milani baked blush in the shade dolce pink and the NARS orgasm blush. When put side by side on her cheeks, you could hardly tell the difference; even after she had worn the two products all day long!

4.     Beauty Blender Vs. Real Techniques Blending Sponge

Have you ever thought of a sponge as a luxury product? I never did either until the release of the infamous beauty blender. This teardrop shaped sponge became famous for its ability to effortlessly bounce on foundation for an airbrushed effect. Its shape is special because it allows users to contour, blend and bake with one simple sponge rather than using three different brushes. I won a beauty blender in a silent auction basket shortly after they hit the market and I used it religiously. It became my go to tool for foundation, concealer, and powder until about a month and a half into using it. No matter how much you use the product or how much you clean it, it gets stained and rough to the point where it does not perform the same as it does when it is new. That means almost every month you are paying close to twenty dollars for a small pink sponge. That is serious cash. I was too cheap to ever repurchase the beauty blender so, on a whim, I gave the Real Techniques sponge a try. To my surprise, this sponge was amazing and in my opinion, better than the beauty blender. The Real techniques sponge is the perfect combination of firm and soft to the touch, which is perfect for flawless foundation application. There is also an extremely convenient flat edge instead of a rounded tear drop shape like the beauty blender has. This flat edge it perfect for precisely carving out contour or baking under the eye. Another thing I love about the Real Techniques sponge, is that it comes in value packs so that you can purchase two sponges for less than the price of one beauty blender. Do not waste your money on a simple product, such as a sponge. Do your wallet a favor and purchase this great dupe instead.

     Please remember that not all drugstore products are a dupe for a luxury product. Some drugstore brands and products are a lower quality in order to offer a lower price. I highly suggest watching product reviews on YouTube or reading beauty influencer blogs in order to learn how these raved about products perform on actual people. Another thing to remember, is that everyone’s skin, lashes, eyebrows, etc. react to products differently. A foundation dupe that I thought worked perfectly, could crease and break apart on someone else. Vice Versa, a product that works for you could be a product that influencers and bloggers have completely rejected. So, tread lightly when it comes to dupes, but also try new things, explore and experiment. Save your bank account some heart ache and find some drugstore dupes that you love! My Makeup Favorites!

When I started wearing makeup, my makeup bag consisted of only three products; foundation that was two shades too dark, bronzer that was as orange as a cheeto, and mascara that barely cost $3.00. It is safe to say that my collection has grown substantially since then. After a year working at Ulta Beauty, I have bought and or tested almost half of the products in the store and I have become officially obsessed with makeup. Due to buying and testing numerous products, I have found many of my go to favorites and I have also found a lot of makeup that I am not willing to ever buy again. In today’s post, I have decided to share my favorite products that I always keep stocked in my personal makeup collection. I would love to hear what products are your favorites. Now, onto the tour of my favorite products in my collection!

Face:

1.     L’OREAL Perfecting Base Primer

This primer is amazing! I bought it soon after a coworker had told me that it was a dupe for the Tarte blurring face primer. It is a budget friendly primer that effortlessly blurs your pores. My favorite thing about this primer? It lasts forever! A little bit goes a long way with this primer, and for a product that you use every day, that is extremely important.

2.     Smashbox Photo Focus Foundation

This product is not a dupe and it will cost you around forty-two dollars, but it is one hundred percent worth the investment. I use to reserve this foundation only for special events and for going out, but it makes my skin look so amazing that I started to use it as my every day foundation. It is a perfectly lightweight, demi-matte foundation that provides a full amount of coverage without feeling like you have a lot of makeup on. I have not been able to find a drugstore foundation that performs as well as this foundation, but for the sake of my bank account, I hope I can find an imposter soon.

3.     Tarte Shape Tape

Similar to the Smashbox foundation, this concealer is not budget friendly. Although it is extremely expensive for a concealer, at twenty-seven dollars, it performs like no other concealer on the market. You can say goodbye to any sign of dark circles and you can say hello to beautiful, bright under eyes! I use this product almost every day, and one tube lasted me almost 7 months. If you have the budget to invest in this concealer I highly recommend it.

4.     Physician’s Formula Butter Bronzer

Want a bronzer that smells like summer? Want a bronzer that glides onto the skin? Want a bronzer that gives you a gorgeous, warm glow? Then you need to head straight to the store to buy this bronzer. It has a fresh coconut scent with a smooth, buttery texture that sits on the skin so beautifully. Once I found this bronzer, I have not used any other bronzing product.

5.     Maybelline’s Master Chrome Highlighter

I was always so hesitant to wear highlighter even though it has become such a big trend. I never knew which shade to use or how to apply it. Then, after watching countless product reviews on YouTube, I found Master Chrome. The golden tone of this blinding highlight gives an ethereal glow without washing you out. Words cannot describe how gorgeous this highlight is for its price tag.

6.     Coty Airspun Setting Powder

For six dollars, you get enough of this product to last you a year! This translucent setting powder effectively sets your face makeup without causing flashback in photos or causing a white cast under the eyes. Unlike some facial powders, this powder is great for both overall setting powder and for baking your contour. The only thing I will warn you about with this powder is the smell. If you are sensitive to smells you may not like the perfume like fragrance that this product has.

7.     MAC Fix Plus Setting Spray

This is not a product that I use every day, but when I need my makeup to last all day without sliding and smudging, I turn to this trusty setting spray. I love this product because unlike other setting sprays that I have used in the past, it has a refreshing fine mist that does not leave my face feeling overly wet or sticky. It also gives my complexion an overall matte finish which is especially helpful in the summer when the heat causes my face to get much shinier than normal. It rings in at around twenty-dollars, but the higher price tag is worth it, especially if it is only being used for special events, because it really does work flawlessly.

Eyes:

1.     Morphe Second Nature Palette

Morphe is an indy brand, turned beauty industry power house. They are known for their high quality, but budget friendly makeup products. This eyeshadow palette is the perfect warm color story with blinding shimmer shadows and bold mattes. I have a large collection of Morphe palettes and I do not think I will ever find a better high pigmented shadow for such a bargain. I highly suggest you check out their collections.

2.     Colourpop Super Shock Single Shadows

These single shadows are only four dollars apiece. If you need a solid shimmer or metallic shadow, packed with pigment, I would check these out on Colourpop’s website. These shadows are best applied with a synthetic brush or simply your fingertip, but with just a little pat of this product on the lid, your eye look goes from average to extraordinary.

3.     Benefit Roller Lash Mascara

This mascara is a higher ticket item, but with just a few swipes on the lashes, you will have perfectly voluminous and long lashes. The formula does not flake or clump so application is hassle free with no need to reapply all day long. There are only two shades available in this product; black and brown. I use the black shade and it is the perfect intense shade of black that defines my eyes without needing to cake on the product in order to see results.

Brows:

1.     Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Definer- Taupe

There is only one product that I will trust day in and day out to effortlessly and naturally define my brows. The triangle shaped tip allows for an easy application, even for beginners. The formula has the perfect amount of waxy texture that keeps the brow hairs in place without causing them to look fake and overdrawn. Another benefit of this product, is its double ended design. On one end of the component, there is the actual pencil and on the opposite end, there is a spoolie brush that allows you to tame the brow hairs with a simple flip of the product rather than having to constantly switch between two separate components.

Lips:

1.     Colourpop Matte Liquid Lipstick

For only six dollars each, these lipsticks perform like a twenty-dollar luxury formula. They come in numerous shades so you will always find what you need when shopping for your ideal shade. I would highly suggest watching the swatch videos of your desired shades on YouTube before buying. The colors appear very different in the pictures compared to how they appear once applied on your lips.

2.     Anastasia Beverly Hills Lip Gloss- Toffee

I was given this lip gloss as a gift from my manager and the second I used it for the first time, I was sold. This gloss is the ideal tinted nude shade. It allows you to keep your look natural while also looking polished and put together. It also has an amazing sugar cookie smell, and who does not love the smell of sugar cookies?!

3.     Fizz & Bubble Sugar Lip Scrub

Not many people have heard of Fizz & Bubble, let alone their sugar lip scrubs. These products last forever and they keep the lips smooth and ready for flawless lipstick application. All the lip scrubs are vegan, edible and cruelty free which is awesome. They are also available in multiple yummy flavors such as, mint mojito, juicy watermelon, rainbow sherbet, and orange dreamsicle.

Eight Makeup Hacks Tested: Which Ones Would I Recommend?

           Makeup Hacks. We have all seen them scattered across social media, but do they really work? I decided to put some of the most common hacks to the test. Did applying powder through a tissue keep my lipstick in place? Did a piece of scotch tape help me achieve Instagram worthy winged liner? Keep reading to find out which hacks I recommend and which hacks I think need to be taken off the internet.

1.     Scotch Tape Winged Eyeliner

This hack has been talked about for years, and has been the inspiration for many products on the market today. I have seen bloggers achieve the perfect winged liner with this hack and since I struggle with this technique, I decided to finally give it a try. What you need for this hack:

·      Scotch tape

·      Liquid or gel eyeliner

Start by applying a piece of scotch tape to the corner of the eye. You want to position the tape slightly under the lower lash line so that the tape extends off your eye at an angle. Then, begin drawing your liner from the inside of the eye to the outside corner. Proceed to draw out along the tape and fill in the wing. Did the hack work the way the bloggers say it does? Yes, and no. It did create somewhat of a wing shape, but the tape continued to move around on me causing a smudged and messy line. I would be interested in trying different tape or maybe a different liner to test the hack once more, but for now I will stick to normal non winged liner.

2.     Highlight Your Way to Pouty Lips

Ever since Kylie Jenner came onto the scene with her perfectly pouty lips, the beauty world has become obsessed with trying to achieve the perfect pout without a pricey and dangerous procedure. For this hack you will need:

·      Your favorite highlighter and highlight brush

·      Lip exfoliator

·      A liquid lipstick of any shade

This hack is one of my new found favorites. Right before you apply your lipstick, lightly exfoliate your lips with either a sugar scrub or a lip exfoliator. Once your lips are nice and smooth, apply a light amount of highlight to your cupids bow (the area that comes to a v in the middle of the upper lip) and to the outer edge of your lower lip. Then simply apply your favorite shade of liquid lipstick. The highlight will peak out from your lipstick giving the illusion that your lips are poutier than usual. I can fully support this hack. Every time I have tried this out, I have gotten so many compliments on my lips and my roommates have even joked asking me if I secretly got lip injections!

3.     Sticky Fallout Fix

Is the colorful fallout from your eyeshadow ruining your perfectly applied foundation when you go to wipe it away? This hack is here to save the day and all you will need is a piece of scotch tape! Once you are finished applying your eyeshadow, fold a piece of scotch tape into a loop with the sticky side facing out. Then, slide your fingers into the loop and pat your under eye to pick up any loose pigment that has fallen during application. This hack works wonders for lighter pigments, but be careful with blues, reds and darker pigments. I found that if you are not gentle the pigment can still smudge and stain your under eye. Applying loose translucent powder under the eye prior to application works much better because it catches the pigments before they can even get to your skin and then you simply sweep it all away with a powder brush when you are finished.

4.     DIY Gel Liner

I had never heard of this technique until I came across it on lifehack.org. Gel liner is a great product to use when you want to achieve an intense liner look, but if you only have a normal pencil liner do not worry. To complete this hack, you will need to gather the following products:

·      Lighter

·      Pencil liner (do not use a pencil that self sharpens by cranking the pencil)

Make sure the pencil is sharpened to your liking. Then, hold the tip of the liner above the flame of the lighter for only one second and let it cool for about fifteen seconds. The heat will intensify the pigment and make it smooth as butter when applying. This technique will not permanently turn your liner into a gel liner so you will have to use a lighter every time you would like to achieve this look. My recommendation? One hundred percent give it a try! It made my liner so easy to apply and the intense black pigment made my eyes pop.

5.     Powder Coat to Make Lipstick Last Longer?

Have you ever left the house loving your lipstick, only to have it completely disappear an hour later after a bite of food or sip of water? For me, this is almost a daily occurrence and it is so frustrating to keep having to apply my lipstick throughout the day. For this hack you will need:

·      A lipstick of your choice

·      A piece of tissue paper

·      Translucent loose powder and a powder brush

Apply your lipstick as normal and then press a piece of tissue paper over your lips. Once the tissue paper is in place, dust the powder over your lips to set the lipstick in place. Remove the tissue paper and the lipstick should be set to stay all day. I tried this hack with both a normal lipstick formula, and a matte lipstick formula. It worked great with the matte formula, but when I attempted it with the normal formula, it made my lips look blotchy and they had a gritty feel to them. For matte liquid lips, I would definitely give this hack a try.

6.     DIY Lip Gloss

Are you clumsy like me? Do you have some eyeshadows that you accidently dropped and broke, but you do not have the heart to throw them away? Then put them to good use by repurposing them with this hack! You will need:

·      Petroleum jelly

·      A broken eyeshadow pigment

·      An empty circular lip gloss container (can be found at any beauty supply store or on Amazon)

For this hack, remove all the eyeshadow pigment and place it into the lip gloss container. Then, take a generous amount, in respect to the amount of pigment, of petroleum jelly and place it in the container along with the pigment. Using a clean toothpick or quetip, stir the two products together to create a beautiful pigmented gloss. I used a taupe shimmer shadow for my gloss and it has become my favorite go to nude gloss when I need to dress up my look. I would suggest adding the pigment in increments. It is a lot easier to make your gloss more pigmented rather than less pigmented.

7.     Dry Mascara? Revive the tube with this hack!

Is your favorite mascara starting to dry out? Well do not worry because I have found the hack that brings mascara back from the dead. You will need is:

·      Saline solution

·      Your tube of dry mascara

Remove the wand from the tube and put two to four drops of saline solution into the tube. Start with 2 drops and add more if needed. As you place the wand back in, wiggle it around in the tube in order to mix the solution. Let your mascara sit for about five to ten minutes before applying it. Almost like magic, your mascara is alive again, and working just as well as the day you bought it! Just because your mascara is dried out, does not always mean that it is time to throw it away. Mascara can try out very easily especially if you are constantly pumping the wand in and out of the tube. Sometimes, all it needs is a little pick me up.

8.     Conceal in triangles instead of semi-circles

I have seen concealer applied with many different techniques, but this hack or technique is the only one that works for me when it comes to successfully cancelling out redness and dark circles under my eyes. Many people apply their concealer under the eyes in a semi-circle shape, but the best shape to apply concealer in is a triangle. By using a triangle instead of a semi-circle, you cover more area and you are able to cover some of the redness that tends to draw out from the nose and cheeks. I have found that a triangle application makes my eyes ten times brighter and my redness is almost nonexistent. You also need a concealer that will perform and provide you with the coverage you need. Some of my favorites are Tarte Shape Tape, Makeup Revolution (a shape tape dupe), and Maybelline Age Rewind. They all provide the perfect amount of blurring coverage while also creating that brightening effect under the eye to make your eyes pop.

Everyday Essentials You Need In Your Makeup Bag This Summer

As summer quickly approaches and the sandy beaches become your second home, there are a couple essentials that every woman needs for perfect lightweight summer makeup on-the-go while also being kind to your gorgeous skin. When you are frequently exposing your skin to the sun, it is crucial that you are using products that not only make you feel beautiful, but also keep your skin looking and feeling beautiful for years to come. Yes, I know you are all wondering where I expect you to get the money to splurge on these skin protecting products, but do not worry. I am always searching for great beauty steals in the makeup section of popular stores and I have linked some of my favorites below. Less is more when it comes to skin care and summer makeup routines. Consider the following six essentials, for that natural summer glow, the next time you are browsing the makeup aisle or when you are packing up your makeup bag.

1. Moisturizer with SPF SPF is the most important factor that you should consider when shopping around for your summer moisturizer. I know what you are all thinking, and no, SPF in your moisturizer is not going to make you smell like sunscreen. Some moisturizers are scented, so if you are sensitive to smell, look for a formula that is labeled unscented. SPF creates an ultra-protective barrier between your skin and the sun which helps decrease your chances of wrinkles, sunspots, leathery appearance to the skin, and most importantly, skin cancer. If you still want to achieve that warm glow on your face while in the summer sun, you can always reach for an option with a lower level of SPF. Another key factor to consider, is your skin type in the summer. Some women are very oily due to the heat reacting with their sweat and oil glands, while other women are very dry and sensitive to the heat. If you are like me, and you get oily in the summer, reach for an oil- free option such as the Neutrogena oil-free moisturizer shown below. If you have a dry complexion, try a moisturizer with more of a cream base in order to lock moisture into your skin. Remember, expensive does not always mean better, so look into trusted inexpensive brands such as, Neutrogena. Moisturizer can be an amazing substitute for primer in the summer or it can be worn on its own for a dewy, natural look.

Translucent powder Translucent powder does not do a lot when it comes to protecting your skin, but it works wonders when you need a little boost in the middle of the day to freshen up your look. The best part about translucent powder, is that almost all brands can be used for all skin tones. Coty Airspun is an affordable translucent powder that provides the skin with a mattifying effect without sacrificing the skin’s natural glow or causing flashback in photos. This product can be applied on top of foundation or directly onto bare skin. After the beach, when your skin is feeling a little shiny, apply your powder with a powder puff or powder brush all over the face or in trouble areas in order to refresh your skin for your next activity of the day.  

Target.com; $5.99 3. Refreshing Facial Mist Facial Mists have become a popular product over the past few years due to their skin soothing qualities and their ability to set your makeup. The fine mist of these sprays can be sprayed on bare skin for a fresh glow or over your finished makeup look to set your makeup in place all day. In the summer, the best use for these sprays is to cool hot skin, especially sunburns. Mario Badescu makes an affordable line of sprays with skin soothing ingredients such as; lavender, cucumber and rose water. These ingredients help calm redness and swelling on the skin that can flare up due to time in the sun or in the summer heat. Most facial mists have a travel size option which is great for on-the-go. Throw a bottle in your purse, beach bag or travel bag and give your face a spritz of mist whenever you need rejuvenation. Another benefit is that the scent of the sprays can be extremely relaxing. On a stressful day, or at a time when you need a sense of relaxation, a spritz of cucumber, rose water or lavender can give you the relief you need.

Ulta.com; $7.00 4 fl. Oz. 4. Mascara Mascara is the one beauty product I always carry in my purse because even a couple swipes on the lashes can make the eyes appear more awake and put together. In the summer, you have a couple options depending on your activities for the day. I do not recommend a waterproof mascara for everyday use simply due to how difficult it is to remove. However, it is great for keeping your lashes drip free when your plans include water activities. Most brands offer both a normal and waterproof formula of their product. If your favorite brand does not offer a waterproof option, look for NYX waterproof topcoat; a low price clear topcoat that when applied, makes any mascara waterproof. If you do choose to use a waterproof mascara formula, make sure that you have an oil based makeup remover on hand. Read the packaging carefully to make sure that the wipe has been tested and proven to remove waterproof makeup products.

Tinted BB cream or a lightweight foundation Is the mixture of heat and your foundation making your face feel heavy or leaving your face looking blotchy instead of flawless? In the summertime, sometimes it is best to reach for a lightweight bb cream or a hydrating skin tint instead of a full coverage option. There are a lot of benefits to these lighter options and one of the biggest benefits circles back to our friend, SPF. BB cream and skin tints can provide you with the perfect amount of coverage for a natural glow while covering up minor imperfections and providing protection from the sun’s rays. My favorite product for this summer is Neutrogena’s hydrating skin tint.
