hanamaki takahiro (26) librarian. enjoys the laid back atmosphere, people watching, and writing unreasonable reviews for books ((lord of the flies: title is misleading not about flies don’t be fooled -2/10) (the new english dictionary: good to hit people with. too heavy to aim well. 9/10). he’s actually a pretty avid reader but only ever recommends shitty romances and twilight by stephanie meyer (which still falls under that category). he makes “guess the animal” posters for kids to hang up at the desk every week and hides sticky notes with jokes in them in between pages of books while reshelving them and hates on the bookstore down the street and takes his lunch breaks outside.

matsukawa issei (26) funeral home employee starts visiting the library regularly, but only on wednesdays after dark when they’re open late. he always wears all black and generally broods about between shelves and smells vaguely of candle wax and formaldehyde. he checks out exclusively old dead people poetry and nonfiction books on burial rites and the histories of obscure civilizations. he knows bafflingly little about animal identification and always take a receipt for when his books are due. he is a shameless flirt he always returns things on time he shows up like clockwork and hanamaki is Always the one that checks out his books for him.

hiro watches him like a fucking HAWK he’s so intriguing there’s obviously something up he’s a little too good looking something is off. hiro squints purses his lips hums he’s blatantly suspicious he just hasn’t put the pieces together yet. also those eyebags are working for him. one day hiro wears a twilight shirt to work issei compliments it and it fucking clicks. hiro freezes stares he SWEARS he sees eyes flash red he can smell the bloodthirst he looks for fangs when he opens his mouth it was so obvious how did he not put the pieces together before!!!!! he Immediately looks up water guns on amazon and googles “holy water near me” he hot glues popsicle sticks together to make a crucifix and starts carrying garlic powder in his bag. he hasn’t decided if he wants to slay or seduce matsukawa yet but decides he’s better safe than sorry.

winter starts and issei says, offhanded, ‘ur sweaters cute but i miss your creepy collection of teel shirts.’

hiro pauses. ‘what sorry?’

‘teel shirts,’ he repeats.

‘do u mean t shirts? bc its just t shirts,’ takahiro says, lost.

‘Ohhhhhhhhh my b i always thought it was teelshirts. whats a t- what does the t mean?’ issei inquires.

takahiro is gonna have a conniption bc of this guy. either he’s the worlds most dedicated troll, or he’s caught on and is trying to give him hints, or he’s the worlds most awful vampire. bc really. who doesnt know what tshirts are?

as soon as he leaves hiro googles when ‘tshirt’ became a thing (1898, 1913, officially 1920) he’s making a timeline

there’s classical music playing from the break room one day issei walks into the library correctly identifies it “oh a handel piece. good choice.” hiro’s eye twitches he pulls a bookmark from his pocket writes “vampissei potential friends/flings/nemeses: george handel”

he wears this one day and issei goes “ah yes the byzantine.” hiro’s like !!!??!!?!?? you didn’t know what a penguin was but you know what was happening 900 years ago??? whatever he reads history books so it’s possible hiro takes a deep breath adds it to the list

at some point hanamaki’s starting to believe this really is just an elaborate prank and maybe issei isn’t a vampire when an fucking doubloon falls out of mtsk wallet while he gets out his library card hiro goes . “where did you get that.” issei, distracted “oh you know.. here it is.” slaps card on the counter hiro grabs it with shaking hands this man(?) is going to be the death of him.
