administrative building, turning the street into a canyon of blinding, geometric light. Officer Jaques stood his ground, the weight of his gearāthe baton, the vest, the heavy armorāfeeling as familiar as his own skin.
Or, at least, most of it did....
He adjusted his stance, feeling the distinct, snug grip of his uniform trousers. Jaques couldn't help but let a ghost of a smile tug at the corner of his mouth as he remembered the scene in the laundry room two nights ago. His husband, Serge, had been mortified, staring at the shrunken, slightly too-tight trousers in the palm of his hand as if they were a crime scene. But when Jaques had pulled them on, heād felt an immediate, sharp appreciation for the accident. They were undeniably smaller, clinging in a way that certainly highlighted his most prominent features, but he hadn't had the heart to tell Serge he was actually thrilled. In fact, heād kissed his husband, thanked him for the "diligent cleaning," and worn them with a newfound, albeit subtle, sense of pride.
He was still replaying that moment when a flicker of movement in the glass reflection caught his eye.
A group of officers was marching toward the perimeter, their movements sharp and rhythmic. Jaques ās gaze snagged on the man leading the detail. He was strikingācrisply uniformed, his posture radiating a composed, rugged authority that made the air around him seem to hum. As they drew closer, Jaques felt his pulse skip, the mundane duty of keeping the surroundings safe suddenly feeling very secondary.
His fantasies began to run wild, unspooling in a direction that had absolutely nothing to do with crowd control. He watched the way the other manās movements mirrored his own, the tactile memory of his own tight, shrunken pants suddenly making him feel incredibly self-conscious and yet, thrillingly exposed." Focus, Jaques" , he told himself, even as his eyes betrayed him, tracing the lines of the other officer's gear.
The absurdity of it allāstanding guard in a restricted zone while his mind was halfway to a very different kind of engagementāstarted to bubble up in his chest. He cleared his throat, trying to force his professional mask back into place. Keeping a straight face was becoming a Herculean task, especially when the other officer happened to glance his way, a brief, knowing spark in his eyes that suggested Jaques wasn't the only one finding the morning shift unexpectedly intense.
It was going to be a very long day, and for the first time in his career, Jaques was actually looking forward to it.
