Just Deserts

Gaius and Tharja had been walking for a while now. What was once a simple trek to retrieve Tharja’s more… excruciating spellbooks had become a half-day foray into the bottomless, borderless, swelting, 300-degree Plegian desert.

Who knew that two unmounted units with large billowing capes, unwieldy hair, and pale, Vitamin-D deficient skin would have any sort of trouble navigating the unforgiving wilderness of Plegia. It was a bad call on Gaius’ part to not equip Acrobat, or at the very least Movement +1. The two of them were absolutely drenched in sweat, which actually wasn’t that bad, considering how incomprehensibly thirsty they were becoming.

"Hey…. Sunshine…" Gaius started up. He wheezed a little upon the ‘sun’. Even remembering that it existed was enough to shrivel up Gaius’ gumdrops. "Didn’t we…. pass by…. that rotting corpse…. an hour… ago?"

       The day Tharja left her home in Plegia, she knew returning would be no easy task. The once luxurious sands that seemed to part at her feet as she passed now held her back, wearing down her body as if to say she was unwelcome. Her skin scorched under the heat, feet aching as she trudged onward through the desert, her unwitting assistant following close behind. Gaius certainly was not her first choice in travel companions. In fact, she would have preferred going alone, but the risk of being captured and put on trial for treason was much too high.

      Gaius had ways of avoiding the law when convenient. Additionally, he was the easiest of the shepherds to bribe. The periodic complaining was an unwanted bonus to an otherwise exceptional arrangement.

     "One more word and I hex your mouth shut." She hissed, throwing a threatening glance over her shoulder. "We're..... almost there."

    Truthfully, she had no idea where they had ended up. They were going to continue walking until nightfall at this rate, but she remained deliberately silent, unwilling to admit her faults to this stranger.
