One of the most amusing, as well as easily arranged entertainments for the Holidays, is a “Bubble Party.” Twenty or more ladies and gentlemen, enough clay pipes so each will have one, three or four bowls of soap-suds, and, say, half a dozen trifles, for prizes, are all that is required, the prized to be awarded to those who blow the largest bubbles, one of the party to act as referee.

“He does not have your brand of talent,”  she’ll so very kindly allow,    “no, but you have seen his performance    before on the court, have you not?”
Alois’ racquetball? He scoffed. Alois was nothing but a rich boy, with typical rich boy hobbies. He probably also played croquet and polo and had a horse named buttercup or some such ridiculous thing.
“Next you shall be claiming that Basile is as equally talented with his wood and whatnot. I should like to see that brute caress an instrument as I can~”
The sigh that left her could be mistaken as nothing more than an exhale of breath. There was no reprieve in this life for any word spoken.    “Perhaps it is because he does not possess    the tendency to pout and moan as often as you do.”
He felt his brow lift in the sheer audacity of the madame’s words - Alois, not one to whine? Did she have a case of mistaken identity? Alois was the worst for such things! He laughed, shaking his head.
“You may say so, Mademoiselle, but I should think it has more to do with his station, hm~? Above mine, certainly... But he does not have my talent!”

“That look you try to pass my way.” And there is something chastising to be seen in her countenance.    “You are not Alois, and can simply not    get away with those eyes.”
He still didn’t know exactly quite how he had apparently peered at the mademoiselle, but more distressing than that fact... Why could Alois get away with certain things while he could not?! What did the other have that he lacked?
“And why should Alois be allowed such privileges above I?”
"Do not make such a face at me, Monsieur de Vigny."
Had he been making a face? Perhaps he had. One cannot be expected to always keep tabs on these things! He smiled and lifted his shoulders in a light shrug.
“Oh? And what kind of face was that, Mademoiselle~?”
