It is almost impossible at this moment to not remember Miley Cyrus at the VMAs, or Kanye West at the VMAs four years ago. If you are young and you have seen any of MTV’s self-documentation of shocking VMA moments, you may even “remember” Madonna kissing Britney (and Christina) in 2003 and Diana Ross with a pasty-clad Li’l Kim in 1999.
Something that MTV never mentions is what Adrock (Adam Horovitz) of the Beastie Boys said literally 4 minutes after that silly boob jiggle:
“I read in the news and heard from my friends all about the sexual assaults and the rapes* that went down at Woodstock 99. It made me feel really sad and angry. OK? Are you all there? Ok. You all remember that? Woodstock? What happened? Well, I was thinking, ‘Why should I just feel mad about it and not do anything about it?’ I think we can do something about it. As musicians, now I’m talking to all the musicians here. Thank you Diana Ross. All the musicians here, I think we can talk to the promoters and make sure that they’re doing something about the safety of all the girls and the women that come to our shows. I think we can talk and work with the security people to make sure they know and understand about sexual harassment and rape and they know how to handle these situations, y’know, respectfully. Anyways, I want to dedicate this award to everybody out there that’s down to make change happen. Thanks.”
YouTube has repeatedly blocked clips of the event for violating Viacom’s copyright, even though there is no way for a regular person to purchase video of VMA broadcasts.
Hopefully, this link sticks around for awhile:

Fuck yeah Adam! I’m incredibly proud of being a fan of a band who used their time to actually talk about important issues, instead of trying to “shock” everyone into remembering them. People might not talk about this (or the time MCA talked about the US in the Middle East, before 9/11) but it just goes to show that they were so, so much more than musicians. What has Miley Cyrus done lately that isn’t about “shocking” people?
