"i know they do." cooper conceded, his eyes finally leaving the couple to look at the girl beside him. lydia was one of nessa's best friends, he saw her around often enough to know that she knew what the family had been through. "truth is, i'm scared of what they will say or what they won't." he wasn't even sure how real tonight was, how authentic these ghosts were. what if he ruined the idea he had of them in his mind? "have you seen any of my siblings? i wonder if they have talked to them."
Lydia hummed. She could almost understand it, that fear. What you don't have can't hurt you, really. It's why she had never dated anyone real. "Will you be more sad, if you don't talk to them?" She shook her head, a little bummed. It would've been nice to see Ness and the others. "The masks aren't helping, really. But I'm sure they're here somewhere."
You think I am high and mighty, mister? Wait 'til you meet my little sister All my, my, my, my armor comes from you hand me my armor @hauntedscreams

where: haunted ballroom who: anyone
cooper cleared his throat, trying to keep his emotions in check. "they look happy, don't you think? i'm not even sure i should interrupt." he didn't say who they were, but it was clear who he was looking at through his mask. the dancing couple lovingly gliding across the ballroom. his parents.
Lydia didn't spend nearly as much time with Nessie's brothers, but she knew them. And she knew their parents when she saw them. "Don't be silly, they'd want to talk to you. They love you."
Melinda cackled like the bitch she most definitely was as they walked away from the angry faced man, who seemed too tongue tied to find a decent insult to throw in their direction. "Oh my gosh, do you see his face? It's so red, he might explode."
"Absolutely! I love this attitude. And that outfit! So, fuck 'em." She grinned, tossing her hair over her shoulder and pulling Lydia onto the dance floor as a particularly fast dance came over the speakers, and people began rushing to the middle with the goal of dancing in the spotlights.
"Just keep an eye on me tonight, would you?" She added, close to Lydia's ear so that the other girl could hear her while they danced. "I kinda… messed up, last week. Got too drunk."
She laughed as Melinda cackled. Maybe Linny was kind of a bitch but Lydia didn't mind. Imogen was sometimes, too. Hell, Lydia was sometimes. It was every girl's right. They had to keep themselves safe somehow.
"Except maybe don't really fuck 'em." She joked as they made their way onto the dance floor. After all, that's what her boyfriend was for. Supposedly.
Lydia's arms curled protectively around her friend's waist. "Of course I will. Did someone hurt you? Do I need to call Mo?" Imogen would definitely know what to do. No need to call Melinda's brothers, they'd just overreact.
"We can do anything if we use our minds, but one must have one to use it." Damocles' eyes cut sideways toward the girl, and those his face was completely covered, he lifted an eyebrow at her. "Do you have one?"
"Yeah, I'm not like, really interested in gauging holes in my face thanks." Lydia muttered. She leveled the stranger with her most Imogen-inspired look. "Is that a blonde joke? Those are so lazy."
open; masquerade
"I don't... like this." Damocles felt stiff in the clothing he wore, face itchy under the mask that seemed stuck magically to his face. "How do I get out of this?"
“Me neither.” She said, running her fingers along the seam of her mask. “But I don’t think we can. This place is weird.”
lydia's mask
verdict: it makes her nervous-- too much like a May Day crown
Melinda had been enjoying herself in Lydia's company. It felt nice for once, to have friends that were her own, that hadn't come through her brothers or the agency. Sauntering up to Lydia with a carefree grin, she pushed a cocktail into the girls hand as she caught the last words of her grumbling.
"They don't. Even when you spell it out, they don't." Melinda added in Lydia's ear, not minding in the slightest when Lydia wrapped her arm around her waist. She leaned into the girl, taking a sip of her drink, quite familiar with the ruse.
Melinda giggled as the man's eyes widened, looking as though he had won the jackpot, and threw in a comment about 'lending a hand'.
"Oh honey, that's sweet of you to offer, but there is nothing you can do here… that I can't do better." Melinda added a bite to her sickly sweet tone, while raising her hand to eye level and wiggling her fingers playfully.
She turned to Lydia, unwrapping from her arm and sliding her hands together instead. "Wanna dance gorgeous?"
It was so much easier to go out when she had a boyfriend to use as a human shield; but she had wanted to go out with just her friends, with just Melinda. Melinda's voice in her ear made her go a little pink which really helped to sell the bit.
"It's true you know," Lydia told the man as she followed Melinda out towards the dancefloor. "She's way better than you could be."
The man looked apoplectic, but he seemed to hold back. Probably just wanted to watch. Creep. Whatever, she and Melinda would totally still have fun.
"Definitely want to dance." She said as she squeezed Melinda's hand. "That's why we came here, right? To dance and have a good time. No one's gonna stop us doing that."

“is this a friend or a friend friend?” zoey asked, arching her brow. “i don’t necessarily think it is a sign of anything other than you being protective. unless there is another reason you wouldn’t want him to meet them?”
--
“I’ve never really like, made friends with someone before dating them? So probably just friend. But like, a good friend.” Lydia chewed on her lip. It wasn’t like any of the Altman sisters had a great record with dating men. “I just-- what if they don’t like him? What if he doesn’t like them?”

[FAKE DATING] Melinda and Lydia, because some dude won't leave one of them alone and the best thing they could think to do was pretend to be dating @xavecamour
Lydia should've expected something like this, honestly. She got around enough that she had a reputation in certain circles, and Melinda Dolohov was an actual literal model. People looked at the pair of them. It couldn't be helped.
But that didn't mean it was super fun, when people didn't care whether or not they showed any interest.
"You think he'd take a hint." Lydia grumbled. The man either didn't hear or didn't want to, walking closer to both of them.
"Busy tonight, gorgeous? I can show you both a good time." The man said, leering.
"Oh, sorry, we're busy." Lydia replied as she slung her arm around Melinda's waist. "With each other. Like, all night."

send me ‘!’ to see how your muse appears in my muse’s GOOD DREAMS
Lydia definitely had a dream where Pacman could talk and he took her, Mo, and Nessie on wild adventures through the alleyways and drainage ditches. They stole a pie and robbed an autoshop. It was a good dream.
send me ‘X’ to see how your muse appears in my muse’s NIGHTMARES
After Nessa's parents accident, Lydia had nightmares where Nessa was in the car with them.

“Yeah, yeah, you were right. it was good. Aside from not being able to talk while eating it. Is it supposed to do that or is it just stale?” He smiled. “Maybe you can help me find something not as sweet. You know, get me used to the less sweet and work me up. Deal?”
Before he knew it, Lydia was curled up into him, head on his arm and head on his chest. He practically stopped breathing. It was challenging enough to have his arm around her to share the bed but to be so intimately close was something he hadn’t felt in …he couldn’t count the years. And the scars to his chest. He didn’t want her to feel the scars beneath his coat. And sweater. And shirt. — he was always paranoid his scars would show if he wasn’t so layered but she was so close to him. Would she be able to feel them? Dear gods please no. He wasn’t ready for that conversation. Not in a hospital bed. Another time, maybe but not then. He closed his eyes and focused on the affection. The closeness. Her gentle way with him. That was what he needed to focus on, not his paranoia. He couldn’t live in his paranoia or he would never have any joy —
“I wouldn’t hurt the Gilderoy kid. I don’t even know him but can tell he’s just an easy target for a joke,” he shook his head as he spoke. “But, if I’m being honest —“ yes, honest, “I have a small list. It’s a very, very small list of people, I would hurt.” He lifted her chin without thinking and looked her dead in the eyes, “Please trust when I say that those very few deserve it.” He blinked softly. “Trust that I don’t hurt for the sake of hurting. It has to be horrid to get on that list.” He rubbed her cheek with his thumb, “Officially it only has two. But that’s a conversation for another day, yeah?” Funny how he was doing some of the things he had stopped himself from doing while speaking softly and totally honest about something so important.
The human condition. The irony. “Pain can shape us, yes.“ Yes. "But there are some things that just shouldn’t happen. Like what got you in this hospital bed. That was unnecessary and provoked in a way that was done simply to cause pain if not more. But the chase that brought you to me — I’ll take that.”
--
“When it’s fresh it melts in your mouth, and it’s just heavenly.” She promised him. “I’ll take you to Honeyduke’s some time. Maybe not a weekend though they get really crowded. And definitely not during a Hogsmeade weekend, kiddos everywhere.” She loved Honeydukes crowded full of kids but she didn’t really think that Henrick would agree.
The solid presence of Henrick’s body and the warmth of having someone there with her again made everything seem so much more bareable. The hospital was dumb and boring and sterile but now she had company and Henrick was awesome at human-pillow duties so it was going to be okay.
Lydia looked into his eyes, which were a very pretty blue did he know that?, and listened closely when he spoke. He was normally a serious type person but this seemed extra important to pay attention to. “I trust you, of course I trust you.” She had never not trusted him. Henrick had never given her a reason to do otherwise. “You don’t have to tell me ever, if you don’t want.
“I don’t know why they did that, at the fair. I don’t know why anyone would ever want to do something like that to people. Zoey’s better at that, at thinking about bad things when she has to. It’s harder for me, I guess. I’d rather just think about all the good things instead. Like, I know that pain is necessary and all that, but like, knowing it and having to live with it’s so different. But yeah. You’re definitely worth sleeping with Victor even though he’s not even that hot or that good at sex. But it’s okay, because I met you. And you’re cool.”

“i hope you know, you can talk to me about anything.”
--
“Duh.” Lydia said, rolling her eyes. She was quiet for a rare moment. “If I have this friend, and I don’t really want to introduce him to Nessie and Mo yet, is that like, a sign of something? It’s just like, he’s really shy, and he’s a good friend, and what if he gets overwhelmed?”
--
henrickxnoname:
“You might say I have good restraint,” he said, thinking about all the simple things he had stopped himself from doing in reference to Lydia. There was something about her hair. He may have been cheekbones but there was something about her cheeks that he wanted to lay his hands on hers just to feel their warmth and what they would feel like when she smiled. And his thumb sliding against her cheekbone. He hardly knew her but wanted to. There was another part of him that felt like he knew her for so long yet there was restraint. Maybe they knew one another in a different life. Maybe they were being given another chance, either because everything was messed up, because of tragedy (as if he hadn’t had enough of that) or, well, maybe they were supposed to be in yet another incarnation. Maybe he was totally wrong. He cleared his throat.
“I suppose I could take a small piece.” He reached over and took over a piece of the sweet candy. “Oh wow. I don’t know what I was expecting but I haven’t had sweets in so long I forgot what the word sweet meant.” Henrick looked at Lydia. “But I could get used to it.” His mouth was sticky at the wrong moment but tried to talk through it, “No, no, no” he shook his head licking his lips, “I was worried — this damned candy,” he laughed. “I was worried but it wasn’t your fault. You didn’t do it to yourself. Once I find out who did they will be wiped out.” He blinked with sincerity in his face. It was that statement that gave him the courage to try climbing into the bed with her.
At first it was awkward. He was awkward. There was only one way he was fitting. Henrick put his arm around Lydia and he scooted toward her. Quietly he told her, “no one will hurt you while I’m around.”
--
Lydia grinned in victory as he laughed. Making Henrick laugh always felt like a hard won prize, like bringing Nessa something she’d never seen before to tinker with. Usually Lyds went for the low-hanging fruit, the people she knew she could always figure out quickly. It was kinda nice to find someone different. “Told you it was good!”
She scooted into his personal space without any hesitation. He was warm, and she could feel his heartbeat if she sat still enough. She’d really missed human contact. Even at home she was always bumping shoulders or poking sides or playing with someone’s hair. Merlin she’d missed this so much. With a sigh she leaned back against his arm, head resting against his chest.
“Thank you, Henn. For coming to visit me, and for worrying even though I didn’t mean to worry you, and for bringing me here.” She didn’t know what to do with the sincerity in his voice when he’d promised revenge on whomever had hurt her and all those people. He was so kind, she didn’t want him to go around hurting people just because of her. “You won’t hurt anyone for real though, will you? Just little hurts, silly ones, like Lockhart and the stairs. I’d hate for someone else to end up in one of these stupid beds.
“Besides, I’ve gotta hurt some times, right? That’s like, ‘the human condition’.” She said adding heavy air quotes to the words. “One of Dad’s books said that, it was a really pretentious book, but I guess it was a little bit right. Because if I never hurt ever, then I never would have dated Victor or run into his girlfriend, or met you while running away from his girlfriend. So sometimes hurting it is worth it.”

On any given day, Lydia is barely resisting the urge to make Henrick give her a piggyback ride
Lydia hasn’t told Mo or Nessa about Henrick yet because she doesn’t want to deal with the looks. Or the questions about when he’ll be her next boyfriend.
