Aruna Sankaranarayanan and her team in Bangalore developed a series of map to illustrate the gender disparity among street names in a handful of major cities (Bengaluru, Chennai, London, Mumbai, New Delhi, Paris, and San Francisco). Street names were gathered through OpenStreetMap and parsed by NamSor, which supposedly guesses “ the likely country of origin of a personal name, based on the sociolinguistics of the name (language, culture)”. Blue roads were, according to the project, named after men, and pink were named after women. All cities mapped so far are overwhelmingly represented by streets named after men. (eh2699).
