December 5th, 1933 marks the day Prohibition in the United States was repealed with the passage of the 21st Amendment. The thought behind prohibition was that it would reduce social problems such as crime, poverty, illness, and drunkenness, instead the opposite proved true. Today marks the day in history when the traditions of craft fermentation and distillation returned to America and the bartender became a respected contributor to the culinary arts.

Unfortunately homebrewers still had to wait 45 more years before the U.S. Congress legalized their favorite hobby in 1978.

Musical Mood of the Day: 12/5/11

A wonderfully unique and passionate cover of Bloc Party's "This Modern Love" is today's musical mood. Final Fantasy is the former pseudonym of musician Owen Pallett, and incredible one-man-band from Canada. The way the song builds, layering each guitar melody one over top of another through skillful violin manipulation, is very, very cool. Great song, great singer, and a great way to start the day. Musical Mood of the Day: 11/30/11

I believe many of us have had a "skinny love" at one point or another in our lives. That is, someone we do not love, or used to love but no longer do, that we stay with merely because we are afraid of being alone. It's as if the desire to remain together is constantly warring against the desire to be free of the sadness that comes when we feel alone lying next to someone at night, separated by an ocean.

Sometimes we are able to rediscover that which made us fall in love in the first place, sometimes we are not. But one thing's for sure, a "skinny love" is no love at all...

Homebrewing 101: Bottling

This is the conclusion to our Homebrewing 101 series. Unfortunately time slipped away from me and this article is being posted a little later then I had hoped. Regardless until you start kegging, bottling is a necessary (sometimes annoying) process. During bottle conditioning you are adding additional sugars to your beer before siphoning it into bottles. The residual yeasts in the beer will eat this new sugar creating CO2, but because the bottles will be capped there is no where for the CO2 to go but to be absorbed into the beer. As with everything post boil, SANITATION IS KEY.

My biggest regret

Out of this entire mess, I have many regrets. Many things I wish I had done, or had not done. But the more I think about it, the one that sticks out the most these days is that I never got an opportunity to punch your father right in his smug, ugly face. Never in my life have I so hated someone I've never met.  I'd rehearsed it over and over in my mind, figured out exactly what I'd say to him if I ever got the chance to meet him. It would have been a great way to use the get-out-of-jail-free card I carried in my wallet during my undergrad years. Misdemeanor assault charge? Would have been well worth it...

Seriously, I hate that guy.
