We were talking about using projections inside the tee-pee. True - some techniques, like 3D-mapping are really expensive and our budget (which means - nothing) wouldn't cover it for sure.

But then I remembered what I saw during Discovery Festival in Rotterdam (which was focused on creative aproach to science) - a small tent onto which some simple images were projected. The guy sitting inside used an overhead projector, a glass dish, water and some random stuff dipped into it. It worked well probably because the size of the tent was really small so the image was quite sharp. I don't think it would work with the tee-pee considering its size, but we were thinking of using some space dividers, which we probaly could experiment with in this way.

REFUNC is an experimental practice focused on architecture, art and design and based on the idea that everything can be reused.

Being in Rotterdam I had a lecture with one of the founders of the company; it was really inspiring to listen about the approach to their work - very often there's no any design or planning involved - they receive a call from a person saying that for exapmple: "hi, we have 20 spare shipping containers - please, do something with it!". Then they go and try to work out on a location how the object might be used and then give to it the second life.

WORM is a pub/club/caffe/cinema located just off the main "pub" street in Rotterdam - Witte de With. The design of the space is all focused around the idea of upcycling - there's cinema built out of old plane seating,  shipping cointainers serving as toilets (a really strange experience considering that people can see shadows of those being inside...), also walls, flooring, tables (attached to rails so they can be moved if neded) - all these are reused materials.

There are many more examples around Rotterdam designed by 2012 Architecten; they very often  use wind mills, which obviously there's plenty in the Netherlands - maybe we should think of what we can easily find in Manchester?

Our research group is focused on the Tee-Pee space; to make our work more efficent we divided the research between us - my part was to work out a space per person inside the Tee Pee.

We know that there must be a bar, DJ booth as well as special area for journalists; also there must be 150 seating spaces or 200 capacity standing spaces. The exact dimensions are not given though so all of the calculations are just estimated.

The image shows whole the area of the Tee-Pee as well as a space per person left after placing a bar, Dj booth and a the area for journalists. To have a better idea of how it would work I compared it to other places like restaurants, fast-foods or bars and pubs.

We can see that the space per person in the Tee-Pee is comparable to a fine dining restaurant and it's twice bigger than the one in fast-foods or bars.

We hope these estimations will help us to work out the layout, walk paths  or amount of space needed to place tables etc.

MATERIALS

My aim is to create a space where young people would feel welcome and comfortable. I will focus on materials already existing in the building but also others, mainly raw, worn, scratchy, unpolished - all those that perfectly reflect youth.

The space will have an unimposing industrial appearance but with a contemporary character and a creative flair.

Designed by Adam Khan Architects New Horizon Youth Centre is based on a concept of home. The building provides spaces for young homeless people with varying degrees of privacy and sociability.

In my project I want to focus on creating a place where all of these young people would feel that they belong to it. It would be a sanctuary where they can escape from every day/family problems or just where they can take responsibility for themselves, feel independent and learn how to adapt to society.

The History of the Hanging Bridge

The History

Thomas Mynshull

In 1689 (which was also the year of his death) he conveyed houses, buildings and land near the Hanging Bridge to the chaplain of the Collegiate Church and also five others. They were contracted to pay the best yearly rent and all the income would be carefully distributed to poor but good and trusted boys born and living in Manchester. The boys were to be sent to different companies where they were trained and given skills. Every company was paid fifty shillings to take a boy. The boys were also given ten shillings to buy clothes to start as well as when they finished their apprenticeship. 

The property comprised a house occupied as three dwellings with cellars below and a small yard. The premises were very old and in a dangerous state in 1826. The building was (probably) knocked down then and was rebuild in 1890.

Mynshull's House

The reason I have chosen this building was first of all its location and its architecture. To me the site has a huge potential; it's placed in the city centre just next to Harvey Nichols, close to the Arndale Centre, Printworks and right next to the Cathedral, so there's a big circulation of people within the day, basically all seven days a week. On the other side though there's the River Irwell separating the vibrant Manchaster city centre from not that "popular" Salford. 

I also want to challenge myself as the building is the most complicated, there are staircases, lifts, also a bit different levels between the Hanging Ditch building and Mynshulls House. 

It is also a great location for my idea; young offenders and disabled people are very often alienated from society, they have to fight for their rights, to be accepted and just to have a chance to live like others. I think placing the Centre in this building and in this location rather than "hiding" them somewhere far away from others is a good way to show that they are accepted which I believe is encouraging for their individual rehabilitation.

  Why disabled people?

I have a friend who's been disabled for about ten years. I remember him telling me the story about the accident and the feeling which came after. He needed quite a long time to understand what happened; at first you think that you're dying, then, when you find out that you'll be paralysed probably until the end of your life you think that it's just temporary, that rehabilitation will help and everything eventually will go back to normal. But that doesn't happen. You slowly realize that you have no other choice than to just accept it. There's a long way of adapting to the new situation. My friend says that he always thinks of that what he can do, and never about what he can't. And he CAN do basically everything; the only one barrier are stairs and people making his life difficult, which unfortunately is quite common in my country (e.g. he wasn't let in to a club a doorman said that it was "too crowded"...)

Why young offenders?

Because they're also people experienced by life; true - they probably had a choice to act differently but at the same time the problem is not in themselves but most of the time in their families. They are young people who need somebody's help to "go back" to society. They need to be shown that they have a choice.

Why do I think that the Hybrid would work?

Choosing my Hybrid I was thinking about the place that could actually exist in reality; about different functions, but complimenting each other somehow.

Both of the groups are somewhere in between the past and the future, they're at the point when they have to decide whether they want to give up or fight to be accepted in society. But first of all they both have to accept themselves.

Also people very often don't appreciate something that they have until they see others suffering. And again, my friend says that "OK, maybe I can't walk but I have an amazing family and friends and this is something that I should be grateful for". I believe that would work in both ways.
