I’m really proud to be a part of all of these releases. In contrast to other cities, there really aren’t a whole lot of active DIY bands in Plattsburgh, but in the past year or so there’s been a whole bunch of people working to put music out there and represent our city. RAIL - Live at the BBC https://rail12901.bandcamp.com/album/live-at-the-bbc RAIL is an arty hardcore punk band that has been around for a few years now with different lineups, but this tape features members of Doomfuck, Adrian Aardvark, and a bunch of other bands. Noisy art punk meets angry poetry. BREN - Hot Lunch https://thebandbren.bandcamp.com/album/hot-lunch This is the first offering from the band that I sing and play guitar in. We are a three piece rock and roll band, I like to think that we play pop punk, but I don’t really know anything. We recorded this one ourselves and we’re very happy with it. Comrade Nixon - Live at Larry’s https://comradenixon.bandcamp.com/album/live-at-larrys Comrade Nixon started in 2014 as the solo project of Andrew Wilson. After a few different bassists and drummers had gone through the group, Comrade Nixon recently solidified as a two piece, with Andrew on vocals and guitar, and Antwon Levee on drums. Just a few months after forming the duo, this tape was recorded live in studio by Larry Dolan, who has recorded tons of other local bands over the years. Comrade Nixon - Wine and Circuses https://comradenixon.bandcamp.com/album/wine-and-circuses This is the first “official” studio album from Comrade Nixon, recorded live in studio by Don Fury, who also recorded Long Cat a few years ago. Phonix Dark - Cashmere Phoenix https://nvusmgmt.bandcamp.com/ This one actually isn’t available to the public just yet, but it’ll be dropping later this month! Cashmere Phoenix is the first full album release from a Plattsburgh Home Team artist. Phonix has been making music in our area for a long time, and has a couple singles and mixtapes online. This tape has beats and rhymes from other Home Team members like Benn Rymon and Trixx Da Don, and artwork by @kmdart

At White House state dinners, it’s customary for a president to nod to the strengths and contributions of guest countries. And when hosting Nordic nations last week, President Obama paid tribute to a particular Finnish export.

“I do want to point out, that Finland has perhaps the most heavy metal bands in the world, per capita,” he said, “and also ranks high on good governance. I don’t know if there’s any correlation there.”

Albert Mudrian is the editor-in-chief of the heavy metal-loving Decibel Magazine. He says that many metalheads took note of President Obama’s comment.

“The metal underground got pretty excited about the President of the United States referencing the Finnish metal scene,” he says.

He says Finland has one of the most vibrant metal scenes in the world. It’s estimated the country has 54 metal bands for every 100,000 Finns. But why Finland?

I've always wondered, "Why Finland?" Maybe it's the cold.

one time i took a single hit

of acid and didn’t tell Jeanee until we were at a small coffee shop in some town amidst the outskirts of your lake house. she was cool with it because i assured her that i wasn’t going to do backflips into oblivion while on your property. Jeanee then took me to a historical house where every room had a purpose. the bathroom was filled with dozens of tiny perfume jars and countless dusty grooming utensils from ye olden dayz. the hallways had giant important painted portraits (possibly velvet) & obscure player pianos perfectly centered beneath. my favorite part was getting there. to the lake house. the wind chimes were already singing as we peeled ourselves out of the car for good. i finally felt the dose. we got inside and set things down, but i managed to sneak away with a pen so i could record a soft tune on the chimes. that was one of my favorite parts. your dog hating me was one of my favorite parts. hanging off the end of the dock upside down, so that the water looked like the sky, was one of my favorite parts. you really oughta get out there and hang off your dock upside down someday - the sky looks like the water.

there are two types of summer; white and dark.

white summers are those full of lawn and linen, the sea and soft sunshine, cherries and children’s smiles, in which you feel disconnected and light, almost floating, dreamy and distant in a haze of white dandelion fluff. you don’t ever want to land.

dark summers are honeyed & sulky, full of pomegranates, thunderstorms, magnolias and un-kept promises. cinematic and shadowy, you exist in a trance of melancholy, and feel passionately, though feign detachment. pandora opens the box, and lightning fills the sky.
