She sat on the end of her bed, comforted by the solid stone floor and she looked over the faded outline of the star in her hands. For a dream, the repercussions were fairly real.
She coughed off to the side, feeling the rattle deep within her chest as her lungs tried to tear themselves apart. The healing potions were helping slow down the magical illness, but she wasn't sure if what Jake had said was right. Yes the stars were powerful enough to create new gods, but did their faded state hold the same power.
She sighed and stood, staggering into the barrier as her legs gave way. It had been a long while since she had had a death experience and her body wasn't as resilient as it normally was without magic. With the star tossed on the bed she headed down to tinker with her machines, the smelter had gone out again and she made a mental note to find a way for it to self ignite at a later date.
"Maria"
She straightened, ears pricked. She recognised that voice, but it was impossible.
"Maria"
It sounded like a sigh, barely even a whisper, but it was definitely there. She left the book by the smelter and made her way back up to her bed.
"Oh Maria"
It sounded almost relieved as she arose from her work area, finally noticing she was actually there, and now the forgotten priestess could tell where the voice was coming from. The Star.
She sat back down on the edge of the bed and picked back up the star, cradling it in her hands as she closed her eyes and tried to focus through the fog. Eventually her sight cleared and she could see the vague shapes of two people she recognised.
"Galaxy!" She was overjoyed to see that her god still existed, albeit faded and almost untouchable. The two smiled in unison and it looked like Andromada's shoulders dropped in relief.
"Oh my sweet it's so glad to see you again-" it sounded like she wanted to say more, but she was nudged by Altair who shook his head.
"We don't have long, this connection to the faded star is weak at best, but Maria, you must eat that visage. You're not yet ready for what lays beyond and your friends still need you." The conviction in his voice scared her, he was always the one that gave her a choice, knowing each of her actions had it's own consequence, but if he was saying to survive with the star, there was no other way out. She had no time to question them, since as she drew in a breath their forms flickered in place.
"Please, Maria sweetheart, trust us." Andromeda looked pained as she vanished, her star filled eyes the last thing to disappear before Maria opened her eyes once more with a gasped breath that sent her into a coughing fit. When that eventually subsided she grabbed the cloth she kept by her bed and wiped her hand and mouth of the blood that she'd coughed up.
It had been so long since she'd heard anything from Galaxy. She knew that without a physical body, Richards plan wouldn't have killed them, but it still hurt not having them to turn to when things got rough.
She looked down at the star in her hands with a renewed interest. Something serious must be coming if Altair was insistent, and to be honest, with that beast around she didn't want to leave those left to face it alone. She mumbled a quick prayer that eating this wouldn't make her worse before she crushed the visage into crumbs and swallowed them.
It may not have been a full star, but the rush of energy that flowed through her made it definitely feel like one. The magic in the world maybe gone, but the faded star renewed her personal store to the point that she wouldn't be going anywhere for a long while yet. It felt good, to be healthy once more, and she sent silent thanks to Jake, wherever he was at the moment, for giving her this chance.
She stood, the first fluent movement she'd made in months, and grinned, headed out to find Ken and Ace. They had been helping her by making the health potions, and with the loss of Zoel, maybe seeing her looking well again would help the poor adoptive mother just that little bit.
