Comm2550 Capstone Poster

This is a representation of one aspect of my identity and life. I identify as a heterosexual female of Mexican American descent. My race and culture is very important to me. In creating this visual, I thought about the main thing that would describe and identify me the best. When growing up we had no self identity and shared my life with twin sister, I later found myself and realizing I was a unique person with my likes, preferences, and identification. The symbolism of being a Mexican American is a large part of my identity as it guides how I live and the means to me to follow my culture. Being brown is a symbol I tend to keep in mind, as it tells people who I am. Lastly the stereotype of being Latina, educated, and a women, Yes I am brown but I am not a chola (gangster), yes I speak English but I also speak Spanish, yes I am married, but I have no children, Yes I work, But no I am not a laborer, Yes I know how to cook, but no I don't cook Mexican food.

To be brave enough to be open in society and self-represent, when in the stop light is one of the hardest things I think a person can do. Being famous and coming out as part of the LGBTQ community is maybe even harder and few have the privilege of being able to do this. In this year's- 2018 P&G YouTube video, freestyle skiing Olympian Gus Kenworthy gives the message of love over bias, as it he comes out and confirms he is happier and skiing better than ever, since coming out as gay and having the loving support of his mother and those who love him.

The concept Self-Represented is better described as a way of self portraying ones identity with characteristics like sexuality, and self-image. To see how Kenworthy's representation of himself to be open and honest about his sexuality is perhaps more eye opening to some about the LGBTQ community, because it shows that not all gay identifying people of queer, and are stereotypical queerly as some people still think.  Times are changing and the world has to grow custom to new norms, the world must accept others identities and sexual preference than just cisgender,  as we all have the right to be who we are and identify as what we want. Kenworthy is a perfect example of a person being able to achieve his/hers/their goals and self-representing himself by expressing, identifying, and living life as one chooses to, to be happier doing it.

 What is gay suppose to look like? and what norm does it have to follow in order for society to accept it? Obviously the deviance behavior is questionable depending on who sees it.

 Some definition of Deviance are: a behavior that is sharply different from a customary, traditional, or generally accepted standard; and/or an action or behavior that violates social norms, including a formally enacted rule, as well as informal violations of social norms; and/or term for somebody whose behavior is different from a customary, traditional, or generally accepted standard.

 When a pre-school child does not have society norms and does not fear acceptance with others they do not care what things look like as long as they like them or want them. In this situation we see that the young boy is deviant to what others thought, he liked the shoes not because they were pink but because they were zebra pattern his favorite animal. The acceptance and norm standards came from the ignorant adults that had to say something about what they thought was acceptable behavior the child should have be doing. But who decides what is correct? There is no one to tell us this, and we must use it to learn that just because it's not common and may be something we do see or hear every day it does not mean it is wrong. (Word Count 229)

In the latest Netflix comedy special by famous American comedian Dave Chappelle- Equanimity, We see and hear a few comedy stories dedicated to the LGBTQ community.

He starts by describing an incident with a transgender woman, in where the passing and intersectionality come up. Vice author Chris Gofrey defines Passing as- "the implication that trans women aren't really women, and trans men aren't really men, but are merely trying to pass off as such and engaging in deception" and in Ch.8 Feminist scholars Gwyn Kirk and Margo Okazawa Rey define Intersectionality- as "an integrative perspective that emphasizes the intersection of several attributes, for example, gender, race, class, and nation"

Chappelle jokingly describes the fact that for 6 songs he danced with what he thought was a women until he finds out "she was a he" at one point or another, and demand a reason why she did not let him know, and he concludes the joke by saying he bought her breakfast after he spent the night with her.

The Intersectionality that any race, gender, and class, has the availability to interrelate with each other regardless of identity and sexuality is seen and heard in the comic story; He as a straight black male linked-up with a transgender women and because of her appearance and his social class, it did not make him gay and by passing, he would not have considered her if it wasn't for the fact he mistook her in the beginning.  Is it really that humorous that intersectionality can be applied to certain life incidents when its convenient to us? and should we pass to make life easier?
