How do we build an identity? What does it mean to find comfort in the construction of a new face?

In response to Sherman's Untitled Film Stills, this work explores gender as performance and ritual, specifically questioning this in terms of womanhood and femininity. What does it mean to be a woman? What are the rituals and actions we do everyday that demonstrate or oppose our identities?

Serge Attukwei Clottey's "Beyond Skin"

Clottey has made work that centers around ideas of image making and identity construction. Taking a cue from mid-century black and white photography made on the coast of West Africa, Clottey seeks to update the visual language of historical images to fit the contemporary.

Both the paintings rendered in duct tape and oil on cork and those made on large sheets of yupo paper are based on existing photographs. Clottey chose his subjects for their expressive nature, drawn to the voice behind the individual. Some are recognizable, such as Chadwick Boseman or Michaela Coel, but some are plucked by the artist from the endless scroll of social media.

Clottey plays with fashion as a form of identity construction. Fabrics act as historical records that are passed on as material culture. The juxtaposition of the figures’ intense subjectivity and the vibrant clothing which adorns them challenges colonialist notions of the agency of the sitter. In the artist’s world, black bodies are no longer props; they assert their independence, pushing beyond antiquated notions of personhood.

Women constructing their identity from the rubble of a man is not new. Historically, it’s systemic. A woman’s salutation – Miss, Ms or Mrs – hinged on her social standing, her surname was that of the family she became property and, in Ireland, until 1999, a woman’s Personal Public Service (PPS) number was once her husband’s – with a ‘W’ at the end to signify ‘wife’.

“The work is intended as a meditation on our ownership of our selves, as well as our capability of abstracting our image and our own 'rights' from our selves. While there has been a renewed focus recently on concerns about things like artificial intelligences (an object gaining subjectivity), the fact that we are correspondingly developing tools to render a subject into objectivity is less apparent. We profile ourselves for social media and for other mediating objects equally as we are profiled by user-behavioral databases and equally as we are vulnerable to be racially, ethnically, or ideologically profiled.”

During my seminar on Diversity in Urban Planning, we asked ourselves, how the process of planning can become more democratic and participative. It is not an easy question to answer, and Cultural Anthropology offers a very complex understanding of what inlcusion and diversity ACTUALLY means: Listening and understanding first, then acting in a respectful and eye-to-eye manner.

Comparing identity construction through analyzing pop culture: We analyzed Jay Z and Sido having themselves filmed in front of and inside public housing blocks, telling about their lives.

This is a representation of one aspect of my identity and life. I identify as a heterosexual female of Mexican American descent. My race and culture is very important to me. In creating this visual, I thought about the main thing that would describe and identify me the best. When growing up we had no self identity and shared my life with twin sister, I later found myself and realizing I was a unique person with my likes, preferences, and identification. The symbolism of being a Mexican American is a large part of my identity as it guides how I live and the means to me to follow my culture. Being brown is a symbol I tend to keep in mind, as it tells people who I am. Lastly the stereotype of being Latina, educated, and a women, Yes I am brown but I am not a chola (gangster), yes I speak English but I also speak Spanish, yes I am married, but I have no children, Yes I work, But no I am not a laborer, Yes I know how to cook, but no I don't cook Mexican food.
