my time at Laika

I was incredibly fortunate enough to be hired to build puppets for Laika and relocated to Portland, Oregon five years ago. The movie I've been working on, "Wildwood," is unreleased, so I am unable to share my personal contributions just yet.

You can see some of the wigs that I built and maintained in this video shared by the studio. I worked in the puppet hospital for most of my time at Laika, and was able to work with all aspects of the puppets from their armatures to their costumes.

i never stopped making art, but i did stop posting. mostly because of Covid and i fell in dumb love and also i broke my ankle.

Season 9, episode 11 of Robot Chicken-here’s a cute little sloth.  Simple armature, body made of upholstery foam and wrapped in athletic tape, custom sculpted head and some fur applied after paint!

Robot Chicken Season 9, Episode 18: Giant Mutated Pubic Lice.  I can’t always tell my grandparents what I’m working on, but it’s always fun!  For this particular sketch I had to create three mutated scabies at three different scales. (The smaller ones were for the visual gag of them leaping out of Grizzlor’s fur.) I cut basic shapes out of some high-density foam, and sculpted over that with magic sculpt. The rest was armature wire and paint. (This was extra fun for me because I based their color schemes off of different Kaiju from Pacific Rim.)

The cutest villain, (in my opinion), in Storm City is Miss Patty Mime!  Or maybe I’m biased because I’m the one that made her.  She’s got a 3D printed hard head lovingly painted by me, and a doll wig that’s been cut, styled, and glued by me as well! 

Sony Crackle is free, so go ahead and give Supermansion season 3 a watch if you’d like to see her mime superpowers in action.

DUCKTAILS!  ...*woo-hoo*. In this halloween spot we did for Disney XD, I was fortunate enough to be plopped into the position of coming up with a way to make hair and “feathers” for Huey, Dewey, Louie, and Webby that looked like the cartoon. 

For their “feathers,” a short minky fur was the best option. Their 3D printed heads were used to create a pattern, and then the fur was applied using one of 3M’s wonderful spray adhesives. The wigs were a bit more complicated. 

3D printed hair pieces had to be printed exactly small enough that the addition of fur on top would not distort the looks of the characters. Then, I took pieces of white faux fur and trimmed them down to fit the 3D prints. The styling involved various clear-drying adhesives and heat application. A tedious but very rewarding process. 

One thing that I love about working on projects for Disney is that they are 1000% committed to making sure that any and all interpretations of their beloved characters are faithful to their source. In this case, the hair and fur that I was using needed to be tinted slightly to achieve that beautiful SLIGHTLY off-white shade that we’ve come to expect from our cartoon pals. As you can see, we achieved that just fine after a day of testing!

Details of a Zombie Puppet from Robot Chicken’s “Look Who’s Walking” Walking Dead Special from 2017.  Many of these characters were created on the spot using creative techniques inspired by the Bash Box-(a collection of discarded toy parts that all fabricators have.)  In this particular instance, I used pieces of a toy skeleton layered under painted sheets of athletic tape to create an exposed fibula. The intestines hanging out of her belly are rolled pieces of foam tape and latex attached with fabric tac, and her head is an altered head from our library of cast heads.  Her body is cast in foam and painted with a mixture of acrylic paint and latex.  Trust me, though, I made a LOT of zombie puppets for this special. Truly a wonderful and gorey experience.

Buddy Thunderstruck puppets! The most joyful season of a tv show i’ve ever been a part of. My contributions to this show included basically all of the hard painted surfaces-(insides of mouths, helmets, beaks, antlers, both Tex Arkana Sr and Jr’s faces, and all mini puppets), and patterning, styling, and fur application of several characters, including Artichoke-(the one in the Pain Diamond shirt), several Darnells and Buddies, and assorted background characters.  Check out Buddy Thunderstruck, if you’re so inclined, on your local Netflix. KAAAA-BOOM!
