Maro’s The Hobbit Teaser

Before previews for The Hobbit officially begin, I thought it would be fun to do another of my Duelist-style teasers where I give tiny hints of things to come. Note that I’m only giving you partial information.

First up, here are some things you can expect:

• a bunch of Dwarf typal cards

• a mechanic from The Lord of the Rings returns with one small change

• some of the creature tokens: 1/1 Human Soldier, 4/4 white Bird Soldier, 6/6 red Dragon, 2/2 green Wolf, and 3/1 colorless Wall

• a card with affinity for Elves

• the biggest Bear we’ve ever printed

• a mechanic that’s a tweak of a faction mechanic that has been brought back in another premier set

• more Sagas that are songs

• a new type of counter created by a hackathon group looking to expand red’s slice of the color pie

• some cards will be able to have “an enduring story”

• a mechanic that’s the cross of two different mechanics that both premiered in a return set

Next, here are some rules text that will be showing up on cards:

• “{T}: Add {C} for each Halfling you control.”

• “you may pay {0} rather than pay the equip cost of the first equip ability you activate each turn.”

• “Whenever another legendary Elf you control enters,”

• “That player may search their library for that many basic land cards,”

• “reveal the top thirteen cards of your library.”

• “Whenever you sacrifice a token, target opponent loses 1 life.”

• “Other Bears you control get +2/+2.”

• “[CARDNAME] has all activated abilities of all [CARDNAME’S CREATURE TYPE] cards in your graveyard.”

• “Whenever a player loses life, that player mills that many cards,”

• “Whenever you attack with creatures with total power 12 or greater”

Here are some creature type lines from the set:

• Creature – Dog

• Creature – Rabbit

• Creature – Goblin Ranger

• Creature – Dragon Wurm

• Creature – Elf Bard

• Creature – Goblin Bard

• Legendary Creature – Dwarf Bard

• Legendary Creature – Elf Advisor

• Legendary Creature – Human Noble Archer

• Legendary Creature – Bear Shapeshifter Warrior

Finally, here are some names in the set:

• Confusticate and Bebother

• Dancing from Dark to Dawn

• Down, Down to Goblin-town

• Getaway Barrel

I was trying to get back to the story archive page today and maybe I missed the link on the Daily MtG page but I had to jump through a few hoops to get there. I was surprised it wasn’t up in the dropdown box where Products, Play, and Learn are- either as another option under Learn, next to Resources, or as its own thing after Learn. Is that a change that could be possible?

What's your favorite type of card advantage?

I like cards where your opponent doesn’t even realize you’re getting card advantage.

Hi, Mark! Piggybacking off the Amass outside of black/red question, do you think we could be a *draft* archetype outside of Black/Red that uses the Amass mechanic (say in White/Black or Black/Green)? Amass Soldiers/Knights or Amass Squirrels would be fun : )

It is possible.

If. The Brothers’ War not doing great complicates things.

Some UB character have very generic mechanics that don't tell their individual story. If you aren't going to show what makes my character unique, why do them at all?

Every card can’t be a wordy rare/mythic rare. Sometimes we have to tell the story with broader strokes. Also, we prioritize what characters need to feel special. Magic sets do need their mechanical meat and potatoes.

Hi Mark! Hornet Sting is obviously a break. What about Gut Shot?

Phyrexian mana does complicate things. It’s obviously in the right color (red), but yes other decks have access. That’s treated more like how we treat colorless cards as it’s more about rate. I wouldn’t call it a break.

Is the already revealed Beorn card supposed to be "the biggest Bear we’ve ever printed"?

It is not.

I'd like to request that the Commander designation isn't used for all eternal cards not associated with their main set. Seeing card lists for The Hobbit Commander is misleading, also, it was very confusing for Jumpstart cards in Marvel. I'd prefer we got, for instance, HOB (main), and HOE (eternal), and HOC (if there were commander cards)

We try to limit how many different expansion symbols there are. For Commander and for eternal formats are (mostly) the same list.

"We’re less happy with them than the shock lands." I mean that makes sense for not printing Fetch Lands into Standard but they're still highly desired game pieces that a lot of people want. Is the lack of reprints just because Wizards isn't making non-standard sets now? Could you start putting them in Commander decks?

I was talking about printing them into Standard. We are looking for appropriate places to reprint them outside of Standard.

What is your favorite weird color pie restriction? e.g. green and red can both make creatures fight, but only red can make opponent creatures fight each other

White is capped with instants and sorceries at granting more than 2 power to its creatures while green can grant larger numbers (and does +1 way less than white).

I think Plant Dragon could cost green mana but have a colourless colour indicator.

But then it is never green. The assignment is it can both be green and not green.

Will fetchlands ever be printed as often as shocklands?

I love the variety of shocks available now and reprinting keeps them accessible and affordable for more players especially those who want to play at FNMs and competitive. It would be great if fetches could be reprinted as frequently…

Our current plan is no. We’re less happy with them than the shock lands.
